6) Molina, C
7) Ankiel, CF

Huh

AP, Molina, Ankiel, and Ryan are all homegrown, and you could argue Luddy is too, in a way.

That means not counting the pitcher 4 or 5 out of 8 starters are homegrown. I’d bet that compares pretty favorably to most of the other potential playoff teams.

by kalmavet on Jul 24, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would there become ...

a lefty-lefty platoon? That doesn’t make a lot of sense. Ankiel will start games. Ankiel will get ABs. It’s pretty clear that he’ll be the 4th OF, but we all know how frequently Tony rotates the lineups. Why is anybody surprised that this is happening? If you want LaRussa around, you’ll have to put up with this constant rotation.

Generally, I don’t really like it, but right now you have one player that might be pulling out of an horrific slump and another struggling with one. This isn’t that bad a move. I would take it at face value, as it doesn’t do any good to try to identify any kind of long term process from LaRussa. He doesn’t look past the current game.

As in he is tired. It’s about putting him in a position to succeed. Why would you NOT want the guy that is hitting lefties a little better in the lineup from time to time against lefties? Why would you not want to give your rookie who is in a funk a day off against a pitcher that he probably isn’t going to be sucessful against?

What if Ankiel starts playing better? I’d never suggest he take AB’s away from a healthy Holliday or Luddy, but against lefties, if Raz doesn’t turn things around, why not?

Why would you NOT want the guy that is hitting lefties a little better in the lineup from time to time against lefties?

because the difference in hitting between the two is not significant and colby’s defense is better.

Why would you not want to give your rookie who is in a funk a day off against a pitcher that he probably isn’t going to be sucessful against?

Because the rookie will provide better over all value. and has no demonstrated confidence issues. and there’s no showing that his slump is anything more than bad luck.

What if Ankiel starts playing better? I’d never suggest he take AB’s away from a healthy Holliday or Luddy, but against lefties, if Raz doesn’t turn things around, why not?

because ankiel has sucked since april 1st. he’s not likely to turn it around this month.

You don’t need metrics to see the routes Ankiel takes to balls in center. It’s really pretty gross. Raz isn’t perfect, but he takes probably half as many bad routes, and on top of that has far superior speed. The difference is very significant.

If this is the argument, then he should never touch the field. We have three better hitters and defenders in the OF, so no need to carry a 4th, right? He should only play in case of injury? It’s one night, and you have a manager that plays the averages.

by etp_stl on Jul 24, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

He may not be a bad hitter.

He sure is hitting bad(ly) though.

And I use the word “bad(ly)” as a massive understatement there.

by mojowo11 on Jul 24, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

no it isn't

Ankiel has no plate discipline whatsoever and swings at anything in the same zip code. That is the definition of a bad hitter. He has power but nothing else virtuous at the plate.

by chuckb on Jul 24, 2009 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

That's exaggeration.

Ankiel hit .264/.341/.431/.772 in the month of April. That may not be tearing the cover off the ball, but it’s pretty far from sucking. In June he had a .705 OPS. Again, not great, but not dismal. In the last week he’s actually had pretty good numbers.

Rasmus hasn’t hit worth a crap for the last two weeks (OPS < .400). You’re rationalizing to say that Rasmus’ current troubles are “bad luck.” That’s a weak argument based on nothing other than your hope to make Rasmus look better.

Finally, yes Rasmus plays better defensively, but in one game the number of defensive opportunities and the difference in quality between the two players is NOT significant. It certainly isn’t a reason to force a player into a bad hitting situation.

to me, all slumps are chance in the absence of

by tom s. on Jul 24, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

That doesn't mean "bad luck."

I’m not saying it’s evidence of a hitter that isn’t adjusting to the major leagues. Slumps are usually a result of loss of confidence or a mechanical hiccup in your swing or timing. That’s not bad luck, that’s poor play. It takes time to work out. Bad luck means he’s hitting the ball squarely, but at defenders. That happens, but usually not beyond a couple of games.

by etp_stl on Jul 24, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i strongly disagree with this.

i have to imagine you are using only your intuition to say that “mechanical hiccups” and “loss of confidence” are behind slumps. i will trust my chance explanation above yours.

the truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark/ it scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark -- macmanus

by tom s. on Jul 24, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

And yours is based on something else?

Baseball isn’t a new game. Slumps are usually evident by a player pulling his head off the ball, pulling his lead shoulder out ahead of time, guessing at the plate, a new hitch in the swing, a different starting point, or a timing problem. This isn’t just related to baseball. If you suddenly start slicing a golf ball when you normally don’t, is that bad luck? Your argument is absurd. Anyone that’s ever been athletic knows that sometimes your mechanics get out of whack, and suddenly something you were great at doesn’t work. It’s muscle memory, and sometimes you’re doing something slightly off. You get over by focusing on a certain aspect of your mechanics and repetition.

by etp_stl on Jul 24, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Focusing on Your Mechanics...

…generally makes things worse and not better.

The conscious mind gets in the way of the subconscious mind.

I’m currently working with a major leaguer and my main message to him is to stop thinking, in particular when he’s at the plate.

See the ball, hit the ball.

by thepainguy on Jul 24, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends on the person.

I’ve always corrected my problems by focusing on a single thing. For instance, when bowling I’ve always focused on my follow-through. If I remember that part, suddenly the ball starts to go where I want again. I’m not talking about focusing on all of your mechanics. I agree that the mind typically gets in the way of your muscle memory.

by etp_stl on Jul 24, 2009 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Distraction?

I would argue that by focusing on his point, which is late and after the critical moment, you’re getting your mind out of the way the critical moment (which is the arm swing and release).

by thepainguy on Jul 24, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

Often, in the example I gave, it comes from mental or physical fatigue. Usually that causes a lapse, and focusing on the follow through forces me to execute my mechanics. I’ve used the same method in shooting a soccer ball, and many other situations. I agree that you don’t want to focus on things in the middle of your mechanics, as that often creates hitches that are very hard to get over.

by etp_stl on Jul 24, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

When Shooting a PK in Soccer

…the key is to focus on the target and nothing else. The same thing is true for pitching.

Focus on the glove and let it rip.

by thepainguy on Jul 24, 2009 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, but ...

when it comes to actually shooting it’s more like hitting a baseball. Keep your eyes on the ball, and focus on the follow through of your leg. When I shoot a PK, I look at the spot until I start to strike the ball. Then, the focus is on the ball.

I’m not arguing that you should play your best 8 hitters every single night, rain or shine…merely that Colby Rasmus is this team’s best CF option and should play whenever he’s physically capable of doing so. So I've been thinking

The craziest thing about this trade is what it does to our bench. Fast-forward to Glaus and Khalil returning, optimistically hoping they can both be useful, the bench is:

Lugo (Schumaker)
Khalil (Ryan)
Glaus
Ankiel (Rasmus)
LaRue

That’s kinda a dope bench. If we carry 12 pitchers, that means a 5 man bench. No more Stav. No more Barden. Maybe even, yes, maybe even no more Thurston, if everything comes together perfectly. It’s hard to imagine.

This is not a team that you mortgage the future for, as simply one player will not put you over the top. At this point, I’m even leaning in favor of it.

by bailorg on Jul 24, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but Pujols mans 1B here.

That’s kind of his point. What good is another 1B/DH guy in St. Louis right now? It’s not dumb for this team.

by etp_stl on Jul 24, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

still dumb

If Wallace’s bat is that good, then he plays. Besides, Wallace can handle 3B now. A few years down the road it’s hard to tell where our needs might be.

But if you’re going to trade him, then at least get fair value. Don’t short-change yourself just because we have 1B covered right now.

by apack on Jul 24, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Where, if he's a 1B?

I agree with getting fair value, but value is subjective. There are several things outside of setting these players on either sides of a scale and measuring them in a vacuum. I’m not a fanatic of what we did here, but it’s possible that Holliday now presents more value than Wallace playing out of position, regardless of his bat.

by etp_stl on Jul 24, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Call me crazy...

But the WS doesn’t mean all that much to me. Oh sure, it’s great to win. But I’m going to watch basically every Cardinals game for probably the rest of my life.

Sacrificing the future for one glorious moment doesn’t seem like it’s worth it. But it depends on what happens with him. Do they re-sign him? Do they offer arbitration and get draft picks if he leaves?

If they get absolutely nothing for him (don’t offer him arb and he leaves), then I’ll be very disappointed.

On the other hand, I’m not sure Wallace would ever get to play here. Much like Craig doesn’t seem to be considered for 3B for a bad defense rap, the same seems to apply to Wallce

by DiscoJer on Jul 24, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is all the more ironic...

considering they trot out Thurston to 3b, who is terrible, and DeRosa, who I don’t think is that great at 3b, either.

I think it's a terrible deal post 2009

However I think if we look at 2009 and what we have now it looks to be a really promising pennant race. I think it’s obvious we were raped by Beane and this could have a severe impact on our future, but I’m trying to look at it and remain calm. There are a lot of variables that go into constructing a roster every season, just look at how this year started and how outfield depth and performance were not of much concern.

Let’s all do ourselves a favor and get on board with this the rest of the way in ‘09 (because quite frankly the roster rocks now) and this summer, while we’re hopefully polishing another Championship Trophy, we can all spin our wheels trying to figure out how to put the best possible team on the field with what’s left internally and externally. It will definitely be more difficult, but who knows- maybe DeWallet won big at the Queen last night and we’re increasing payroll to $125MM next year.

We have a better chance to win right now. i don’t care about 6 years of a cost controlled unknown when albert may not have 6 years left of being albert. we are taking a shot a winning it all this year. Donmt worry about resigning pujols dewitt doesn’t want the stadium burned to the ground. albert brings in more revenue by himself than he will be paid even if it is 30 mil a year. if we lose holliday who cares we are in for a fun two months. we can resign derosa to a more reasonable contract to play lf and reup glaus or let freese take over freeing up money for pinero, who this year has become the pinnacle of what mortensen could be. i loved me some walrus but at the end of the day he was an unknown quantity that is replaced by aknown quantity that could push us to a ws birth. unless of course philadelphia gets halladay then everyone is effed… ha

I think

that Tony just has more stroke w/ DeWitt than Mo does. If Tony goes to DeWitt and says we need Holliday and Mo says no we don’t, DeWitt will side w/ Tony. Tony runs that organization.

by chuckb on Jul 24, 2009 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, like 100 percent.

But I put DeWitt in the same bucket. If he thinks this team can’t win w/o TLR and is buckling to his manager’s wishes, he goes on my shit list too.

by MdRedbirdFreak on Jul 24, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

That's Mo's fault not Tony's

Tony tried to force his hand with Rolen and he was patient enough to get a good return (at the time). If he caved, and Beane exploited it, that’s on him. He knew what Tony was going to be like going in.

There were certainly others in the FO that were interested in acquiring Matt Holliday. That movement didn’t have much steam until post-Chris Duncan, however. DeWitt is not exactly a handsoff owner and TLR still has a solid relationship with DeWitt.

Just a word to the wise

We talk as if the FO is composed of 3 decision makers (Mozeliak, Luhnow & TLR). In truth, these three serve as useful but incomplete representations of the different viewpoints in the organization. The characterizations that are being made of Mozeliak (spineless, rollover) and Tony (authoritarian, tantrum thrower) and Luhnow (protector of the minors) are gross oversimplifications if not simply inaccurate. There’s give and takes and sometimes these players take positions that we might not expect.

It’s an interesting dynamic (if a dysfunctional one, imo) but it’s not a simple one.

Mo Better Judgement

Honestly, I like the work Mo has done over the past month or so. We are in a freakin’ pennant race folks! Wallace is not a sure thing. Adding DeRosa, dumping CDunc and adding Holliday…we should be a much better offensive team. I gotta believe they don’t do this deal unless they either believe they can afford to keep Roman and/or they just knew that Walrus had no real future given our depth chart. If you haven’t seen Walrus in person…he sure doesn’t look like he could roam an MLB outfield.

Damn!

well, I guess it’s too bad there wasn’t a position in the infield in which we could try him. I don’t know….maybe near one of the bases. How about near one of the foul lines, to protect his lack of range. But we’re so solid at both of those 2 positions!
