it's up to you, this is your thread VEB. go nuts.

Really lame to blame him.....
Tough decision, but you just about half to go home with that. Franklin had chances, and didn’t get us out of the inning. Nuff said. Tough loss, but it happens. Blame the “O” for only managing 3 runs.

Roy Oswalt is an excellent pitcher
3 runs is plenty. We had a 3-2 lead entering the 9th. Franklin fucked up. Thurston fucked up.

Thurston didn't fuck anything up. That play goes home. You don't "chance" it.

I think we recognize that the play has to go home but only after....
A. He bobbled it
B. Kaz Matsui was standing literally right next to him
Of course in retrospect people will say Thurston fucked up. But the fact remains thats an L and a Blown Save on Ryan Franklin.

Not really lame when,
he was put in there as a defensive replacement. He fumbled it, and then he had to go home. The ball was hit plenty hard for the DP, and a quality 2B would have taken care of it.
Yes, it would have been nice if Franklin did his job, but he is reliant upon his fielding. Yes, he blew it, but so did Thurston.
I don’t think anybody was really expecting an offensive explosion from either offense last night. Given the pitchers going, that’s kinda silly.

Its a tough game!
I thought it was a good loss. Matsui is fast from the left side. Thurston got an out. Houston will fade of its own problems. Its the Cubs that have face all the adversity that will be there in the end. We are a much better club now than two days ago. I’m encouraged.

some stats.
86 G, 264 PA, 80 OPS+, age 29
82 G, 179 PA, 97 OPS+, age 26
Joe Thurston so far this year.
Brian Barton all of 2008.
Probably not a meaningful comparison, but I was suddenly curious.

Players didn't execute
If Rasmus gets the bunt out further, Balkin’ Bob doesn’t blow the call.
If Pujols doesn’t hit into 37 double plays tonight, we probably score more.
If Skip charges that ball, Ryan can make the double play.
If Thurston turns the double play, we are still playing.
Sometimes, you just lose. No reason to really explain it. Tony made some questionable calls but nothing like letting Thurston pitch. Carp pitched well, despite being handed some bad breaks. The bottom of the order produced runs. Pujols didn’t hit and the Cards didn’t make some tough plays.
Tough break.

but terrible, terrible timing. this loss is going to feel like a helluva lot more than a tough break.

Well at least they traded Duncan to make me feel a little better
This is a bad loss, and it’s not like that trade really does anything, but the fact that I don’t have to be emotionally invested in Duncan’s play is just cause to feel better.
At least there is no off day tomorrow, that’s the worst. A tough lost and a day to stew on it.

I don't think the guys in the clubhouse will be feeling so great
Dave Duncan has got to be in a bad mood, and Chris was a fixture. It’s a good move for the team, but that’s got to be an emotional downer for a while.

if we don’t beat them, it will be more crushing.

Dave Duncan, taking shots at Mo and the farm system...all in one quote.
“The way I look at it is he was traded for a player who had very little (leverage) … he was designated for assignment,” Duncan said. "It’s highly unusual for a major-league roster player to be traded for somebody like that. So somebody wanted to get him out of the organization, and they’ve accomplished what they wanted to accomplish.
“Either that or we don’t have anybody in the minor leagues that they wanted for (Lugo). One or the other.”

Um, no.
He said that Lugo was DFA’d, they had no leverage in dealing him.
But the Cardinals trade a major league roster player for him.
Which, to him, meant someone in the organization wanted him gone.
Or else our farm system was so terrible, we couldn’t give any of those guys away for him.

I happen to agree.....
I’d much rather have seen Duncan sent to AAA, and tried again next year when Ankiel would likely be gone. Even if it were off the bench as the 4th OF. Dude is cheap, signed for a few more years, and we know that when healthy, he should hit. He clearly hasn’t been healthy the last two years.

CDunc needed to move on
Even if Chris put up above average numbers next year, he still would have been a below average fielder. The off season and spring training focus would still be on him, so Chris was in a no win situation. His first GIDP or K to end a game or miscue in the outfield would rekindle the fan frustration from the last two years and the entire neoptism argument.
IMO, If you look at this from just Chris’ point of view, this is a welcome move and even better that it is to the AL to eliminate road games in STL.
by ubeddie on Jul 23, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why would I look at it from just Chris' position?
I’m a fan of the Cardinals, and I want what is best for them, first and foremost.

What's best for the team ...
is for the lightning rod that was Chris Duncan moves to another organization. It wasn’t his fault that he became such, but he was not going to get a fair shake in this town. In addition, it is obvious that this player was adversely affecting the decisions made by field and office management.
This is what’s best for the team, though I wish for the kid to fully recover from his injuries and put up the kinds of numbers of which he is capable.

Then you should be pleased with the trade
Look at Chris road/home splits – The numbers (provided by Goold in Item #1) can lead you to believe the microscope was impacting his performance at home, therefore what was best for the team and him was a change of scenery.
The alternative to the trade is to convince all fans to give Chris a clean slate next season which is not going to happen. The trade eliminates unnecessary noise and distractions.
by ubeddie on Jul 23, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe Dave should get his facts straight
Chris Duncan was optioned before the trade so he was not a major leaguer. And the person in the minor leagues they wanted was Chris Duncan
The poster formerly known as JoeyBombs.
by RasRoY on Jul 23, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wondered about that to...
was part of the deal that Chris had to accept an assignment to AAA ’cause the Bosox would only go through with it if he was at Pawtucket? Do the rules require that he be at Memphis before the trade so he could go straight to their AAA team?
by ArkansasTravs on Jul 23, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think, ...
from what has been said over the last few days, that Duncan was probably being optioned because they knew the deal wasn’t going to go through in time for Lugo to make is to Houston, and they didn’t want to be down a man for the game. As it worked out, it allowed them to send Barden up to the team while trading Duncan and waiting for Lugo for tonight.
