Colby gets to try to hit if you don't bunt him
And maybe he singles. And then they don’t walk Pujols.
sac insures walk
hit away means maybe not
"No matter where you go, there you are" Buckeroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension
that's actually
one of the few useful bunts in terms of run expectancy, if I’m remembering the hidden game of baseball correctly.
It might raise your chance of scoring one run
But it lowers your chance of scoring multiple runs drastically.
FWIW, it typically reduces WPA.
Im late to the party, again
but, I like what Im seeing so far.
Go Cards!
Keep the foot on the throttle!
C'mon you Redbirds, lets prove em' wrong, again!
STOP BUNTING!
I’ll say it again…you are giving away an out for, at best, a marginal improvement of one fucking base…
…and sometimes you get the lead runner thrown out. Let major league hitters HIT!

… hate to say it, dog, but i think Evan is (mostly) right. at least from the perspective of the BoSox: they literally got something for nothing. doesn’t mean it isn’t a decent deal for the Cards, but it’s even better for the Sox.
more likely something next year than
lugnut
"No matter where you go, there you are" Buckeroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension
I'm not sure why you think this is true
Duncan had, what, one good season? Maybe 1.5? And now he’s back, all his health problems are supposedly fixed, but he’s still completely hapless up there.
He’s 28 now. It’s starting to look to me like the league has figured him out, because I’m not seeing the Chris Duncan of old…or even really any signs that that player still exists.
I don't see it that way
I just don;t see Duncan contributing anything until next year at best. And that’s only if he’s DH’ing full time.
It’s time to regard Duncan’s hot five months of his career as the outlier.
"I usually don’t read other peoples sigs." -Cuttah
What value does Duncan have?
He can platoon with LaRoche at first IF Lowell’s hip blows out. And then MAYBE he won’t suck like he has for the last 600 plate appearances, and then… he’ll be arb eligible and they’ll non-tender him.
the point isn't that Dunc has/had value...
… it’s that the BoSox had DFA’d Lugo. they were going to let him walk away — and pay all his salary — and get nothing at all in return. instead, they got a guy who has OPSed over .900 for a full season in the majors. if Dunc ever fully recovers from his neck operation then he could be a valuable bench/platoon/depth player, even if he doesn’t quite make it back to his peak.
having a potential .800-.850 OPS player ready to step in when JD Drew (or whoever) gets hurt is valuable. especially since they are literally getting him for nothing.
and you don't think they have better options in their minors system
that they could plug into Lugo’s roster spot, than Duncan. I don’t think Dunc is going to be on Boston’s major league roster. Minor leagues for sure
R.P.O.F.Y.M.
no that's true...
… Duncan is a depth player for them. but he’s a potentially very valuable depth player that they got for literally nothing at all. they made out very well in the deal.
we could make out well too, but that remains to be seen.
you know
taken out of context, an outside observer wouldn’t know what side we root for, the bosox or the cards… lol
(by which i mean i think dunc, who should have been dfa’d, and lugo, who was dfa’d, are of equal-ish value)
R.P.O.F.Y.M.
that's the point of the article...
… you don’t have to DFA Dunc. you can just send him to the minors and hope he recovers at some point over the next three years. if he doesn’t, oh well. if he does, then he’s a very valuable player.
You really think
Duncan magically will have an 850-ish OPS in the AL East after sucking since August of 07 in the NL Central?
"I usually don’t read other peoples sigs." -Cuttah
Yeah
I agree with that, I didn’t think about it from the Red Sox perspective immediately.
However, I get the feeling that after Tony’s comments, Duncan had the go. The fans were already pissed at him, for, well… sucking; and when Tony defended him at the expense of Ryan, who had been playing quite well for use, it probably spelled Duncans end.
Derosa.

in the world where
12.3M=nothing
Lugo has better offensive upside this season. Two years from now we might regret it.
Dunc will be on the wrong side of baseball age in two years
scary as that is to me.
"I usually don’t read other peoples sigs." -Cuttah
Actually he costs more than Lugo will for us.
I understand your premise, but you’re forgetting the human element here. It was absolutely in Duncan’s best interest to go elsewhere and had gotten to the point where it was for the Cardinals, too.
"I usually don’t read other peoples sigs." -Cuttah
I laugh at all the duncan/lugo hand-wringing
We’re trading someone who was (or should have been) 24th or 25th on roster for someone who will be 24th or 25th on roster. Best thing that happened was saving 800K which might loosen purse strings on another deal an sent a message that no one is safe.
Just win

Evan replied to my e-mail, so I'll post the relevant part here
It may seem like it on the face, but both players still had potential, and potential was swapped for potential. I guess that sounds a lot like the Lugo/Duncan trade, but the cruz of it to me is this: Lugo was going to become a free agent. Period. No one was going to take him. Even Lugo’s buddy, Omar, was going to wait until Lugo became a free agent. Why? There was no reason, at all, to give up anything of value.
The Cards gave up someone (and two someones, if the Sox opt for the PTBNL over cash) with value — even if he doesn’t reach that value, they still gave up value.
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Why did we have to trade away to get Lugo again? I don’t mind giving up Duncan, but was the PTBNL really necessary?
Derosa.
because NL Central aka Red Sox Farm System?

thing is...
… WE had to trade something to get Lugo. if he was a FA he’d go to the Mets. so for us to get him we had to give something up.
that was my thought
we are getting him for league minimum for two years. if he went to FA that would not have happened.

The good news is
the Astros blow. They have a rotation that his Moehlers, Mike Hampton and Russ Ortiz in it. They aren’t winning the division.
But if they stay in this a little longer, they won’t trade Miguel Tejada or Pudge Rodriguez or anyone and their farm system will continue to be the worst in all of baseball…thus continuing them to sign All-Stars from 10 years ago.

And why was Ankiel playing so deep on the last play.
I know its a short fence and he has a strong arm, but he’s not going to throw anybody out from 250 feet.
And I know we were playing in but we had an easy DP on the grounder to Thurston.
I think defensive positioning lost us the game. We should’ve been playing corners with 1st and 3rd and one out. We would’ve gotten a DP and the game would be in the 10th right now.

I'm glad to hear that some of you guys

'Stay Thursty My Friends' - Tony LaRussa
I went to a game last year that we led by 1 against the astros going into the 9th
same thing happened and tonight reopens that wound
fuck you astros
The last two nights have been terrible
Having to watch Wellemeyer throw away another game is just awful.
There needs to be at least 1 more roster move, but we need to replace at least 2 guys.
There were 4 guys on the team, now 3, that I can not stand to watch because I know they’re going to fail almost every time. Those 4, as you probably already know, are/were:
Chris Duncan*
Joe Thurston
Rick Ankiel
Todd Wellemeyer
If I had to keep one of the three it would be a tough decision between Thurston and Ankiel. But as it is now, we need a back of the rotation starter and a good 3B, 2B, or LF. All we really need is LF, but getting one could solve the others by moving DeRosa or Schu to left. We need one more bat, other than Lugo, and a SP. And its tough to wait another week to see what happens. I don’t want to see us crumble.
The poster formerly known as JoeyBombs.
that sucked
I mostly don’t like the timing of this. If there was any emotional high from the All Star Game, it’s surely gone now. The race for Comedy Central is wide open, and mathematically it’s damned hard to make up games than it is to extend a lead. The Cardinals have to widen that lead, because while the Cubs have a potential to be hammered, the Brewers’ schedule is much kinder.
At this rate, we’ll be ripe for the Brewers to crush us down the stretch.

Blown saves never seem to happen when the team has won 9 of it’s last 10 games or something. It’s always when we are in the middle of a bad stretch.
