Game 96 Overflow thread

I hate getting beat by these fuckers and, with Oswalt looming tomorrow, there's a fairly decent chance we'll be swept! At least we'll have Carp on the mound. Do we seriously have no better options than Todd Wellemeyer?

Wellemeyer

What a player. We are so fortunate to have snatched him from the junk heap and rehabilitated him with that Duncan magic.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me

Help me with this

Who of Duncan’s rehab projects has been good for more than a season or two? Marquis – nope. Weaver – nope. Williams – maybe but he was pretty average. Carp – he was already good just hurt. Who? Maybe the guy is great with short term turnarounds but it wears off. Wellemeyer is the latest.

on the plus side...

… we’ve got Carp, Waino, Piniero, Lohse going in the next four. on the down side, we’re facing Oswalt, Zimmerman, Happ, and Lopez. 2 of those are really tough, 1 of them is pretty tough and sometimes unhittable, and the other has weird flashes of brilliance.

Tough call there

leaving Walters in to hit. I mean, it’s not like we have a huge bullpen and are just coming out of the All-Star break and/or have a bunch of off days coming up over the next month.

Not that it probably would’ve mattered, given the bench options, but it still gives the impression that TLR has no rhyme or reason for his actions.

this one is frustrating as all hell

Coming out of the hype of the Break with a little momentum and we look flat….again. We put up a tiny handful of runs in winning 2 of 3 from ARZ and now we’re crapping the bed vs. HOU. Not good.

I’m sure Tony will throw the offense under the bus later, which will appease us fans anyhow.

by goodymobb on Jul 21, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

LaRussa treats Brendan unfairly in defense of Duncan

I don’t know how much this was discussed on the other threads, but did anyone else notice how much Tony disrespected Brendan Ryan while trying to defend Chris Duncan from all the ’unfairness.

TLR:

“And did Ryan have a particularly good day? How can people ask? What’s the question there? A guy who could hit a two-run homer versus Brendan doing what? Looking futile again? Did anybody watch Brendan’s at-bats?

For the record:
Ryan: .275/.313/.365
Duncan: .227/.329/.358

So neither one is really hitting the ball that well.

If Tony wants to defend Duncan, that’s one thing. And I could see how it’s frustrating to see Duncan (presumably in Tony’s eyes) give his best effort every day and get destroyed by fans for not producing.

But is it really any less unfair to rip Brendan Ryan like that, when the discussion wasn’t about him?

I know the guy swung at that 3-0 count last year or whatever, but geez Tony, let it go!

it was about Ryan...

… since Duncan PH for Ryan. TLR also mentioned that Valverde has a HUGE platoon split, which is true.

quite frankly, neither Duncan nor Ryan had a chance last night, so the point is pretty much moot.

Vaguely

Brendan Ryan is clearly secondary in the discussion.

He still could have said, “Brendan was having a rough go of it today.”, as opposed to calling him futile. That’s all I’m saying. It just seems a little ridiculous and excessive to me.

The likelihood of him GIDP in that situation is slim. It was overwhelmingly likely for Duncan.

That is a tall order even for a Halladay/Carpenter/Wainwright/Pinerio.

He has an out pitch, he just doesn't use it once he gets here.

He outperformed Boggs in most metrics in AAA. I don’t see how Boggs can rate so much more highly than PJ other than a better meld with our insane coaching staff.

by DriverZn on Jul 21, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Where is this outpitch?

I’ve never seen it. I don’t like Walters stuff. I don’t think he’s anything more than a 5th starter unless he develops Pineiros-2009 command.

Mitchell Boggs, for all his faults, has a great fastball and a usable slider & curveball.

Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation

by azruavatar on Jul 21, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

His changeup is his out pitch.

Which you combine with the same fastball that Loshe has makes a 4th to 5th starter.

Boggs needs to get his control together. As much as I hate not having an out pitch, I hate walks more.

by DriverZn on Jul 21, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

His changeup was deposited in the stands.

But he brings a screwball movement

changeup that the Cardinals refuse to call for him to throw.

It’s bizarre. His control is crap because they’ve asked him to throw pitches he normally doesn’t throw.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 21, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

walters struggled with his control

in his first exposure to AAA, too, when he was throwing whatever he wanted. it’s a common narrative: pitchers with B stuff add walks as they reach the upper levels.

by DanUpBaby on Jul 21, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

His K rate has been down by a quarter this year.

And his control at the majors has been not so hot. I’m not sure if he’s nibbling or what but I don’t think he’s got the stuff to throw it where hitters can get to it and they aren’t chasing it.

Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation

by azruavatar on Jul 21, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Some People Think a Screwball Will Ruin Your Arm

Maybe that’s why he doesn’t always throw it.

However, like I said I saw him throw 7 in a row in his last outing.

I think/hope they are just having him work on his slider in a game setting. They want to see if it works against real batters.

So far, not so much.

by thepainguy on Jul 21, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Its not Bizarre,

Its exactly the same crap that happened with Reyes. Remember his top 5 in the league CH. Then he mysteriously stopped using it. Then on the record he said “Duncan told him about how he could use his breaking ball to induce ground balls.” Then when the other hitters kept jacking those ground ball pitches in the stand it was never Duncan’s fault for making him pitch to his weakness but always Reyes for failing to follow the plan.

The coach is susposed to help the player, not ask them to do what they cannot.

by DriverZn on Jul 21, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't have a problem with Boggs

Honestly I would take either of them over Wellemeyer. Boggs might be more able to succeed under Duncan, but I think PJ has just as much potential.

I would just like to have one off speed artist on this staff so our opponents cannot just gear up for 91-93 mph fastballs and mid 80s sliders for 4 games in a row.

He’s got a -32 OPS+. Think about that.

In fewer PA he’s been more a sieve than Stavinoha, plus his defense, presumably his strong suit, hasn’t been good either.

You know what...

…I’m not ashamed to say it…I love PJ Walters. Now, he’s kind of stunk as a Cardinal, but he’s got swagger and looks really confident. That slider is dirty sometimes and that changeup is disgusting too…if he could actually throw it in a game (I mean why throw your best pitch…that’s for losers!).

My cardinal rule of announcing...

…assuming I ran the world of course, was that each booth would have a former hitter and a former pitcher and they would ONLY talk about their area of expertise. But sadly, I do not run the world. And no, Joe Morgan and Rick Sutcliffe would not be acceptable.

VivaElBirdos...Scoring less, but more frequently since approximately 1903.

by redbirdnation8206 on Jul 21, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, in a manner of speaking

Ideally you’d have a good play-by-play guy and then the hitter would talk about hitting and baserunning while the pitcher talked about mechanics and pitches and stuff. So the pitcher and hitter duo would really only be one announcer b/c they’d only be allowed to talk about their area. I think it may work. Couldn’t be worse than Tim McCarver talking about pitching, right?
