Game 92 Open Thread -- July 18, 2009

Arizona Diamondbacks at St. Louis Cardinals, Jul 18, 2009 7:15 PM EDT

Petit Wainwright
7.22 FIP 3.63 FIP

Wainwright has climbed to 12th in the NL in FIP after a shaky start. He really didn't get much rest at the All-Star break but hopefully the free-swinging snakes will help him get back in the groove he was in.

Petit is giving up 3 homers every 9 innings and has walked 14 in 33 IP. He's been hurt by a GB% of 32.2%. He's basically a fastball, slider, changeup guy whose fastball is averaging just 86.6 mph. Hopefully the Cards can tee him up and give Wainer a good lead with which to work before we face Haren tomorrow.

Speaking of Rolen

I heard on local sports talk radio that the reason Rolen and LaRussa had their falling out was because Rolen was irritated that Pujols, Molina, and a couple other guys were dogging it down to first on grounders, he confronted Albert, and Albert and Tony got all bent out of shape.

Anyone else heard anything similar to that? I think it’s bogus, considering who the local host was, but I’ve never heard anything on why Rolen wanted out, other than getting benched in the ’06 playoffs.

kinney was a bad decision

but the walk was also the wrong decision. By walking the bases loaded, LaRussa increased run expectancy by .181.

This was one of the few situations where walking Albert would have had a positive run value effect, but chris young is not albert pujols. “The Book” says it’s a Bad Idea to IBB a .400 wOBA player with men on 2-3 and 2 outs, and chris young is a .300ish wOBA player. So it was a Really Frigging Stupid thing to do.

the pitcher was on deck

not exactly a clean up hitter
does the book say anything about Dan Harren embarrassing an offense and by walking him you potentially get into a poor bullpen? I don’t see how pitching to an awful hitter is worse than pitching to a replacement level hitter (assuming you can pitch, and actually throw strikes)

It's official. Cardinals third basemen are jinxed.

haren has an OPS of .707 this year

he’s “not exactly” a slouch. Actually, he’s been roughly the same quality of hitter this year as Chris Young.

TLR was hoping that the DB would pinch hit. They called his bluff.

the end of every half inning IS a turning point. -Evilfrog

by SleepyCA on Jul 18, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats fair, but even if haren has an ops of .840 i think the walk is still a good idea though

You may be giving the diamondbacks an FAR greater opportunity to score a run or two, but even if that’s the case, Dan Haren was and seemingly will continue to be more valuable than those possible runs.

Getting Haren out of the game AND getting out of the inning underscored upon seems to me the only way you can win this game. If you don’t walk Young, you don’t even give them the opportunity to pull Haren.

Feelings.

When I was about 6 my parents got my brother and me two pet rabbits. I loved those rabbits. They made me happy. Then the neighbour’s cat ate them. My brother and I found their bones in the bushes during a game of hide-and-seek. That made me very sad.

I’m reminded of that feeling this evening. Dead baby pet rabbits.

so I’m assuming he’s rocking the 6 hair stache.

The real question is

do they have 10 day contracts in baseball? You could be RICH hopping around the league.

by ducttape16 on Jul 18, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

seriously this reminds of a fantasty baseball idea

just pick up awful lefties whenever they are about to face the cards and then drop them after the game. In fact, there’s a probably a couple of other teams you could do this with.

holy fucking shit. how could such a great team have such a piss poor media following them?

I know.

It’s amazing to listen to one man run the booth by himself. Why can’t we just give it to someone who’s interesting and see how it shakes out. Can’t be any worse than what we have. I’m almost considering paying for extra innings just so I can listen to Vin do games.

Did anyone else catch Pat & Ricky trying to figure out some pitcher for the D-Backs BABIP?

Parris was abso-fucking-lutely lost. They finally decided it was ba-bip. I can understand them not liking some of these new fangled stats*, but geez, your job is to know baseball, how hard is it to do some research every now and then?

I say it ba-bip.

But only because it’s so much faster than B-A-B-I-P. When it’s something like OPS, I say O-P-S. Or W-P-A. But ba-bip is a lot of letters.
