Futures Game Open Thread
Brett Wallace bats 3rd and plays 3rd for the U.S. team today. Daryl Jones is also on the team, though not in the starting lineup. They're unquestionably our 2 best prospects and are both players who could end up being All-Stars for the Cards within 3-4 years. Hell, Wallace is likely to be the team's starting third baseman next year, if Tony will allow it. It wouldn't surprise me if Jones is up w/ the big club at some point next year as well. God knows we could use a left fielder. Game is on ESPN2 at 1 pm. I think I'll have to flip back and forth between this game and the Cards-Cubs clash.

Ummm
yes.
The field looked awful when we left. Standing water on the track. Just soaking wet. I hope they don’t let Daryl Jones play in this as it’s perfect for tweaking knees.
At least the tourists are seeing real STL weather.
(And the play by Wallace to his left was ok — he only had to jump about 6 inches though.)

Slimmer Walrus?
I thought Wallace looked slimmer (and that he moved reasonably well).
His thighs are still big, but not out of proportion. Part of the thing is that he likes his pants cut loose in the thighs and tighter at the ankles (ala relaxed or even loose fit jeans). He may also have a longer torso (ala a swimmer like Michael Phelps).
Unfortunately, I was there in person (3B loge) but saw all of 1/2 inning of the game. My 9YO couldn’t stand the rain delay once the Cards/Cubs game was over.

I haven’t seen him play before now, so I’m just wondering if those who have seen him play think he really is missing the mobility to keep him from being an average 3B. Does his speed keep him from really being a corner OF option?

I still hate watching infielders field the ball off to the side.
This matador style that they teach is maddening. It’s like they tell the infielder, “Don’t worry, it’s the pitcher’s fault that the guy hit it that hard. It won’t show up on your stat-line.”

I know, but ...
I was taught that you keep the ball in front of you. Even if that means taking one in the teeth occasionally. It just strikes me as selfish baseball.

I Teach My Kids To Square Up...
…on everything they can because that is the right way to play the game. They only go to the side when they absolutely have to.
Of course it’s harder to hammer that message home when they don’t see the pros doing it (and in the worst case they see pros going to the side on balls that they don’t even have to move on).
It’s pathetic.

Here we go.
One more on base, and you have Wallace up with two on. They can’t walk him, then, can they?

Sounds like Walrus is done now...
RT MatthewHLeach Wallace on deck. @kingclip just reported Vitters will come in for the next half-inning, so Cards fans should hope D.Jennings gets on here.

Did anyone watch UFC 100 last night? And was it as awesome as I’ve read?

watched some of it
Saw Hendo knock out/shut up Bisping and watched GSP dominate yet another opponent.
Hendersons quote immediately after the fight was awesome: “I knew he was out and I don’t usually fight like that, but that last one was to shut him up” (Or something along those lines.

I wasn't feeling great last night so I stayed home
but the Lesnar thrashing sounds like it was awesome. I’m hoping GSP moves up a class to face Silva next.

me too
GSP has done all he can at his current weight class. I didn’t go anywhere to watch, but the link I was on crapped out before the lesnar fight, but I knew where it was heading before it started.

Why has he not even gotten a sniff anymore? Is he that bad defensively?

They don't like him at third.
He’s slumped at the plate. I still think the bat is potent and would be nice off the bench but I’m a little less confident than I was 3 months ago in that opinion.

I missed all of Wallace unfortunately
Seeing him in the dugout, he didn’t look that hefty to me. Of coarse, his thunder thighs weren’t visible.

From watching BP
Wallace had a better BP than Heyward or Alvarez, though Heyward did connect on a bomb. Wallace squared up the ball more consistently than anyone else I saw and had a 3-in-a-row pepper session with the bullpen that was impressive.
Jones is as advertised, spray hitter. If he’s Skip with speed/defense I’d be very happy.
Stanton on the Marlins AA has MONSTER raw power. Moon shot fly balls and put a ball about 3 rows from the concourse in left. Ridiculous.
Heyward has big raw power but he’s pretty long to the ball getting his hands out front and hit several balls foul down the 1B side, can’t keep it fair down that side if you’re out front. He shortened up during the game—-but going by his BP swing I’d bet big leaguers could beat him pretty regularly with the generic hard-inside soft-away. My first thought was that he looked a lot like Kyle Russell though not nearly as long…..but there’s no one in baseball with a swing like Russell’s. Color me skeptical on him being able to consistently square up with power swings for the 35-40 HR he’s being predicted to have for now. Seems he has the athleticism to make up for it and change his approach so far, so what do I know but just my opinion…
Alvarez is really quick to the ball I can instantly see why scouts love him. Very simple swing with a good plane/path.

Colby Too?
“but going by his BP swing I’d bet big leaguers could beat him pretty regularly with the generic hard-inside soft-away.”
I happened to get on the field during BP for 3 of the 4 games against the Giants 2 weeks ago and had the same thought when watching Colby take BP. He arm bars during his load, which will make it hard for him to cover the inner 1/3 of the strike zone unless his hands are incredibly fast. This swing “flaw” doesn’t hurt Griffey’s power numbers (but it does hurt his average) but I’m not sure Colby is Griffey.
Something to watch, especially next year.
I know this is part of Duncan’s problem and it may be part of Ank’s as well.

Never seen a Colby BP
Or paid attention to his swing, but he doesn’t seem to have a problem with the inner half in games. In fact he tends to roll over on outside pitches more than anything I’ve noticed instead of (like last night!) just pumping them the other way.
Not afraid to nitpick

I had a busy day and the rain delay killed my recording.
Saw a bit of Wallace and Jones live, but I’d like to watch the whole thing.
