Just picked up Studwick on my fantasy team a few days ago too
"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."
Lud's been on my fantasy team for a while
and is worthy of a starting spot.

that was awful,
but amusing. i also loved the fact that the game over-valued really good players in trades. i got so many good young, cost-controlled players for edmonds and rolen.

So it would be a dumb investment on my part. But I’d still probably play MVP ’05 on my PS2.

I play MVP on occasion
but not very often.
The St. Louis Cardinals have the Not-So-Fab Five: Wellemeyer, Thurston, Ankiel, Duncan and Thompson.
This.
Every baseball game outside of The Show is make by 2K. Obviously the 2K series, but also The Bigs and Power Pros. All 2Kgames…
V, b.
I completely agree...
I would make a comment, but it could be construed as political so I’ll abstain…
this year's Madden is the first in years
to add enough new features and actually try to improve the play on the field to be worth looking into. but they’ve now made me skeptical, so we’ll see
Well this years is supposed to fix
all that BS that took place in the last two years games.

I'm not sure how the EA-NFL exclusive deal even hurt 2K...

I think
2K or Sony got the rights to make baseball video games. If you Googled it, you’d probably be able to find out.
The St. Louis Cardinals have the Not-So-Fab Five: Wellemeyer, Thurston, Ankiel, Duncan and Thompson.
2k has them for wii/xbox
but sony can make there own. not sure what’s up w/ that distinction but i know that’s the case
This is true
But the new Show is actually better than MVP 05. It’s the first one to surpass MVP, which is pathetic.
Is there anyway
that the Show will ever come to 360 because I’m dying for a good baseball game
by AWolfAtTheDoor on Jul 12, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions
sorry that wasn't entirely clear
meaning Sony publishes it, not a 3rd party, so it won’t be on xbox ever
Oh ok I got you
I’m seriously starting to regret getting a 360 just for Halo
by AWolfAtTheDoor on Jul 12, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah it's a tough call
i had my 360 first and i like it better for online play but the ps3 exclusives (Metal Gear, Killzone, The Show, etc) are all great games and make good use of the bluray capabilities. At this point, it’s much more reasonably priced btw
said this the other day, not sure to who
but if you have a ps3, get The Show. Best baseball game since MVP ’05
I don't...
That’s the problem. Baseball games on the 360 have been nothing short of an epic fail. The 2K series is brutal…

also i like that they have game challenges and cameos by Ted williams, Jackie robinson etc..

There’s no way around that. He was in a no win situation, and he never did really develop any discernible offensive skills. Consequently, when your biggest asset is defensive prowess, it’s not going to be good to be replacing the greatest defensive shortstop that ever lived.
Ozzie never did have a great arm, anyway. He had a tremendously fast release, though.

No, but they're still human.
I’ve been an official, and there are going to be calls that are missed. You have to ask whether or not it’s reasonable to get the call right every time. Pujols gets payed to catch routine balls, but he had one go through his legs in the first game today. Does he deserve to be fined, as well? That was much more aggregious an error than the one the umpire just made.

He Was Really Wild
That looked like more than just a rushing problem to me.
Of course, in trying to fix his mechanics they could have broken his timing.
I should point out that he's been wild literally his entire career.
The only time he’s even had okay control was last season, but every single other season he’s had walk rates over 4.0.
VivaElBirdos...Scoring less, but more frequently since approximately 1903.

Career Walk Rate: 4.35
2008 Walk Rate: 4.05
He’s actually shown a greater ability to throw strikes this season than any for the rest of his career. As for hitting spots? Well he’s never really done that either. Keep in mind that control is throwing the ball over the plate for strikes and command is the ability to spot your best stuff consistently. When he was more of a gas-thrower, he had neither. Last year he could throw strikes, but not necessarily spotted…he got by on stuff. Now he’s pitching more like they guy he’s always been, but since he’s a starter he doesn’t rear back and throw like he used to.
Could he be hurt? Sure I suppose so…because like you I have no access to his current medical reports or any knowledge of what his arm feels like. On the other hand, statistically Wellemeyer is simply pitching the way he’s always pitched with 2008 seeming more and more like a very large outlier…and his BB rate was still 3.71, which isn’t very good.
Look at his game logs: Was he healthy July 2nd, but not the game before or after? Was he unhealthy on May 17th when he walked 7, but then suddenly healthy again when he started throwing more strikes?
Here’s how I see this, you and I are hearing hooves…but I’m guessing horse and you’re guessing zebra. The guy has spent his whole career being a wild pitcher with minimal control AND command. So, to me, the most obvious explanation is a pitcher going back to what he’s always done.

If I were them
I wouldn’t even have Haren pitch against the Cardinals. Yusmeiro Petit has the highest HR rate in MLB history for anyone >150 innings and they go to Coors after the Cardinals series….I’d go Davis Garland Petit in STL and then Haren Scherzer Davis in Coors.

Overhead Views
In (mild) defense of the umps, it’s going to be hard to see the trap from the field level (or simply with the naked eye).
It’s much more obvious when viewed from a higher angle (and in slow motion).
I would put a 5th ump in front of a monitor and have him over-rule calls like those (perhaps with limited numbers of challenges ala the NFL). I know that there are ump supervisors at many games monitoring the pace of play, so maybe give the review job to them (so you don’t have to add to payroll).
Of course, the issue is what do you do when there are runners on base. Where do the runners end up once you rule that the ball was caught? Do they go back where they were?
The scheme above only works well when the bases are empty.
I'd say in tonight's game
You award Colby a single and move every runner up a base.

You don't.
Part of the beauty of the game is the human element. This wasn’t an horrifically bad call. Twenty years ago you wouldn’t have had camera coverage for every square inch of the playing field, and people would be talking about the great recovery Johnson made to catch the ball. Shit happens, and you move on. The Cardinals won the game.
I hate the overthinking that has taken over the game. If we ever go to excessive instant replay and automated strikezone calls, that will be the day I quit watching baseball. That’s not hyperbole. I am a person that has lived and breathed Cardinals baseball for nearly 3 decades, but that’ll be the end of it.
Football's Replay Has Made Stupid Referees.
The quality of officiating has gone down significantly since the re-institution of instant replay. They don’t both to try to make the right call, as they know it will be reviewed anyway; so now they just make the call that’s easiest to overturn. It makes the game slow, but football is slow. So, nobody seems to notice that it breaks the flow of the game.
As you can probably tell, I don’t like it there, either. Between that, and the damned showboating, I don’t have much use for watching football anymore, either. I found that I got into fantasy football, because it was more interesting than watching the games anymore.
i completely agree about football
and i used to really love watching it… baseball is much better re: showboating- you just don’t see it very often.

Things we learned this weekend
1) Ryan Ludwick is not dead.
2) Todd Wellemeyer should not be employed on Monday morning.
3) NO MORE FREAKING BUNTING.
4) Milton Bradley needs to be kneecapped after the barrel roll.
5) Al can ride “Kobe’s” ass all year about things but when he points out the obvious (Molina never makes an effort on anything hit near the infield) Tony goes out of his way to get in a huff about it.
6) Rick Ankiel/Chris Duncan isn’t working.
7) Joe Morgan said something tonight that wrapped my mind in such a pretzel, I can’t even remember what it was. But it was awesome.
8) Fox Saturday Blackouts suck.
9) KSDK and WGN need to get themselves on the Extra Innings package.
by Hardcore Legend on Jul 13, 2009 3:11 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
As for #9...
The better solution is to drop the awfulness that is KSDK and go with FSMW on Sundays, too. The whole thing is stupid to me, because very few people don’t have basic cable anymore. So that tiny group of cable-less people gets to see the game on Sundays when they otherwise wouldn’t. But the overwhelming majority of the market would be seeing it on FSMW anyway. Meanwhile, all those non-St. Louis people within the Cardinals’ territory on FSMW get cut out. Like me when I’m in Memphis. But I’m sure it’s all about money, blah blah blah.
As for WGN, I guess they figure if you have the Extra Innings package, you’re going to have WGN. Wouldn’t that be the case?
I agree with numbers 1-8.
V, b.
But you're in a small minority...
Basically I meant that the few unique viewers that KSDK gains you in St. Louis are offset by the non-St. Louis FSMW viewers several times over.
V, b.
LOTS
of people don’t have basic cable.
"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter
According to this:
With 93 million subscribers to either cable or satellite television last year (according to the National Cable & Telecommunications Association), only about 10 percent of American homes go without.
Ten percent. My point is that the local viewers you gain with KSDK don’t come close to accounting for the regional, FSMW viewers you lose outside the St. Louis market. But I’m sure the Cardinals are better off thanks to the money KSDK pays for the rights.
V, b.
Ten
percent is a sizable portion. Why should baseball become even more expensive for fans then it already is? I do the MLB.tv work-around rather than pay loads of money for TV I won’t watch, but there are plenty of people who cannot afford cable. Or internet.
What I want to know is, how many of those subscribers are businesses (restaurants, offices, etc)?
"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter
Considering it says "homes"...
I’d say very few if any. And when I say “very few people don’t have basic cable anymore”, and only one out of ten households don’t, I’m not seeing how that’s inaccurate. You’re bringing up a completely different point with baseball being more expensive than it already is. I said nothing about that, nor was I arguing that. I was simply pointing out the number of viewers that have access to that particular game. But it’s not like there are plenty of teams that forgo any local telecasts, and that includes teams in more limited-sized markets. The Reds are one off the top of my head.
V, b.
By eliminating free
local telecasts, baseball become exclusive to those who can afford cable or drinking at a bar for three hours. That is why I am against eliminating all non-cable local telecasts.
People with cable (who are out of market) whine about being blacked out for those 10-15 games per season, but for other people, it’s all the baseball they get to watch. It was different when I was a kid, but if I was a kid now, I’d only get to watch games on local telecasts as my family has never had cable.
"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter
That's fair...
I just think with the widespread geographical following the Cardinals have compared to the rest of the league, too many people get left out of those games. But it’s just one a week, so it’s tolerable I guess…
V, b.
i'd say the government should interfere and demand that games become
available for public viewing, but government interference would clearly be detrimental to the “free market” of the government-designated monopoly that is MLB.
the truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark/ it scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark -- macmanus
For real.
And then people wonder why there are more NFL fans than baseball fans – free football on at least two stations every Sunday, and free football Monday night. (Though there are probably additional reasons for this.)

MNF is on ESPN now, so not free football on Monday night
But you’ve got 1 or 2 games on CBS and/or FOX on Sunday afternoons, plus the NBC SNF game. That’s probably 3-4 free games a week, out of 12-16 total.

AH...
Wasn’t aware of MNF on ESPN. But SNF on NBC makes up for that, I guess. Still, that’s almost 25% of the games – free!
What about playoff games? Are they all free?

I believe so
All carried on FOX or CBS, maybe one or two on NBC
