VEB T-Shirt Design Contest
Lot's of chatter about this subject so I thought I would finally put up a fanpost. We need a new VEB shirt that brings us past the old 90's one we had before and into the 21st century. The problem is no one yet has steped up to the plate to make one. So I think a good ol Contest should be in order for it.
Two weeks from today I will revulate all contestants and will put up a new Fanpost with a poll so everyone can vote on the best T-Shirt. Thier will be no prize but the pride of winning. Even if you don't think you are any good at designing or drawing please put up a picture of your idea. Your idea might help someone else to make the best VEB shirt possible.
T-Shirts can eithier be only one sided or two sided. It is up to you. Just put up a picture in this fanpost of the T-shirt design. It doesn't have to be full size but do keep a higher image shot on your computer so when we do deceide to make T-shirts.
Remember these T-Shirts are going represent VEB so make it tasteful.
P.S
I am looking for a cheap online T-Shirt supply so we can post up the new T-Shirt and everyone has chance to purchase it from there.
P.S.S
I will even tell you guys my idea so far for a T-shirt. On the back I want Viva El Birdos like the back of a jersey with the numbers 67. Than at the botton of the T-Shirt this quote "When (Player's Name) gets back from the DL it will be like we traded for an All-Star!"

Well, I have the spare time at work
but not the design expertise. I am a very fast computer learner, however, so could someone just give me the basics – what program would be best to use? Something like Adobe Illustrator? I’m just looking at a site like shirt.woot.com, and wondering what those people use. Also, maybe a basic guideline about copyrights; I know that using official logos and stuff like that are off limits, but I don’t know how far it extends. Can “St. Louis Cardinals” even appear on the shirt? Probably not. What about just “Cardinals” or just “STL”— these are the issues I’m talking about.
by mattyp on Jul 10, 2009 10:31 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would think STL and Cardinals would be ok
Good thought though about copyright’s. Something we all need to stay away from doing. Which is too bad cause I would of just used my coat of arms for a T-Shirt.
I personally use Photoshop. Illustrator is for vector based graphics. But these are both programs that costs a lot of money to obtain. A cheap comparable software would either GIMP or Paint.net

Cardinals is fine, but I believe you cannot use the same font.

Can't do that anyway
without ripping it off directly because it’s an original, custom font.

Really...
…I think the copyright extends to the combination of a cardinal, something baseball related, and the text of cardinals or STL. The combination of all three will get you in trouble.

I think that image is property of someone at the Post-Dispatch. But I really like the second one. And can I make a recommendation? Can we make the shits red this year? Living in Chicago I often to to Cards games in either Wrigley or Miller (even the Cell) and always wear red to help show the number of Cards fans in attendance. With a red VEB shirt, I could and would wear it to Wrigley proudly.
Also HL, I don’t remember that red design last time but I do remember the “Bravo!” one. I have to say, I love the “Eye” shirt and it definitely has my early vote.

I was thinking we could simply do something similar to the bumper sticker logo over there with vivaelbirdos.com in a festive style text similar to the original “bravo, bravo, elbirdo” shirt and have birds dressed in latin american influenced garb in a variety of baseball poses—sliding into a base, catching a ball, pitching, hitting…I bet I could come up with a good 60’s era retro look to the whole thing as well.

I can't speak for Dan
but personally I’d like to see a red one so that they could be worn to the games and feel as though one was “fitting in.” I like “Viva El Birdos” w/o the url but think that it’s important for the url to be on there to identify the site. I don’t think it should be too player or season specific (unless it relates to Pujols or all the team’s championships) b/c the site and the community are about the team and not the player. Even if Pujols were to be traded or leave via free agency, the site will live. This isn’t a player’s fan club.
I like the FR shirt a lot but think a short-sleeve shirt would be better than the “baseball-sleeve” shirt just b/c those summer games are so hot. Maybe a Cardinal swinging a bat, making an outstanding fielding play…I don’t know. I’d love to see what you can come up with.

Go east young man
A friend of mine (Jeff Roman from FR and Ram’s Gab) recently commented that between Carpenter and Wagonmaker, we’d have a pretty good Oregon Trail team (particularly if we can coax Doc Halladay to join up). When the t-shirt contest was announced, I figured I’d take a stab at putting the idea to paper (fabric? bits?).
There’s plenty of work to be done (such as redoing the Wagonmaker and repixelating everything), but I figured I’d throw it out for comments before putting in more time on the details. Among the things I’m wondering:
(1) How do we feel about the copyright situation for this kind of thing. Currently these are screen grabs from the game which is about as infringey as I can get. I can redraw the thing if necessary, but there are tons of shirts online with the same artwork, so I’m not sure what the ruling is on this.
(2) Is this too subtle for a Cardinals shirt? The arch, wagonmaker, and text might not get it done. I’m open for thoughts on how to improve that aspect of things
(3) Any and all comments or suggestions (including, “don’t bother finishing this”)
Thanks

i like it. =)
it’s funny, and it’s a bit nostalgic. i loved that game. here are my, hopefully constructive, criticisms.
1. i think the design would be better served on a red background. the black is a little…dark.
2. the font for the ‘viva el birdos’ and ‘exploring the…’ bits need to be changed. something more cursive for the veb, and something less arial-ish for the subtext. that font is just a suggestion, btw.
3. i don’t think you need the little framing blue thingies. i understand why they’re there, i just don’t think they’re entirely necessary.
all in all, it made me chuckle, which is always good. it’s a solid idea, and original as well. as for the copyright issues, i can’t really speak to that.
cardinals are the things with feathers that perch within the soul.
by ilrosso on Jul 14, 2009 3:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
as for subtlety,
which i see i completely failed to address, i think it is on the subtle side. you could add an option 4 or something that says ‘albert pujols is ridiculous,’ or perhaps add a stadium in the background to help that a bit.
also, why are they going east?
cardinals are the things with feathers that perch within the soul.
by ilrosso on Jul 14, 2009 3:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
thanks for the comments
The fonts on the title are definitely a case of my just wanting to get a comp finished after working on the other parts. I’ll try out some other options (including the one you suggested) and repost.
A red shirt might help with the cards connection, so that might fix my subtly problem to some extent right there. I tried adding a stadium but had trouble making it not crowd the design.
As for traveling east, I had two reasons:
(1) in the game you start in Independence, meaning you would have to travel east to get to STL
(2) The wagon needs to be on the same side of the river as the stadium or the text box doesn’t make sense
Thanks again, I’ll try to repost an updated design today or tomorrow.

As I indicated in my first post,
this was my first attempt at design software (Adobe Illustrator) so I went for something simple but I think appealing. Its pragmatic too, because it only uses black ink and therefore will cut down greatly on the final cost, plus I think it would look pretty cool on a Cardinal red shirt. This is a rough draft—I am still messing around with fonts etc. so please let know if you think its worth refining and feel free to offer any suggestions. Without further ado, the front first and then the back:

P.S. That outermost rectangle is part of the template, so it shouldn’t show up on the final T-Shirt. Also, someone please check my spanish; it should say “Love the Birds! Fear the Birds! (commands)” Also re: the back, any thoughts on whether I should make it just “Vivaelbirdos” to make it a little more stealth or if I should keep the “.com” Any feedback—even negative—is appreciated.

the inability to use a real STL logo does pose some problems. The VEB logo—which I went off of—does kind of just look like a generic bird. Anyway, I messed around with mine a little as per ChuckB’s suggestion. I have no graphic design skills or tools
but I was thinking about parodying the Che Guevara shirt (you know the one) with “Viva El Birdos” replacing “Viva La Revolution” or whatever. In place of Che, you have Fredbird rendered in the same style. Might be tough to pull off, since you’d need Fredbird to look enough like Che to make the reference clear, but enough like his own dorky self to make it funny.
Whatever design is chosen, the back of it should definitely sport one of VEB’s 5 billion running in-jokes.

I'm more concerned about how many living Che-shirt-wearing hipsters would hate it
I hope it would be lots and lots and lots.

Thought it was pretty funny myself...
Glad some folks liked it. Just a quick and dirty Photoshop job, but I’d be happy to work it up further or to turn the .psd file over to anyone who wants to play with it at further length.

I would appreciate it
If you could send me the psd. Overall I like the idea a lot. Like the Viva el Birdos font too. Something about Fredbirds face just irks me the wrong way though so was just going to tweak around with it.
Good idea though all around

You could stash the blog URL on there anywhere you wanted: sleeve, bottom, front, back, I don’t care.
Make it any font you want, too.
Just got inspired when I saw the fanpost and I loves me some t-shirts.

I really like the back.
Simple, clever.
The front doesn’t really do it for me.
Decrease runs scored?
Maybe.
Decrease winning? Never seen that proven.

agree with hazel here
I would like the Fredbird/Che T-shirt above as the front, and your slogan on the back. That would rock.

Work in Progress
Here is a real rough draft of what I have done so far. I have been flipping around ideas.

I need to make the text more readable and add some kind of effect to it. It has a bunch of single season records on it. Not so sure about the baseball but I dig the silhouettes

In regards to the Copyright concerns
Has anybody thought of just asking for permission? I’m not sure how open the Cardinals generally are to this sort of thing, but it couldn’t hurt to ask right?
Albert Pujols is ridiculous.
by stlhulsey on Jul 21, 2009 2:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No chance.
Cardinals do not want their logo going on quality uncontrolled products without MLB approval that parodies a cultural figure near and dear to a specific sect of the population. I have no idea if the design could be contrived as offensive, but its possible it could be. For good reason, the Cardinals and MLB will have a short list of authorized products and retailers for their products as reputational risk is at stake.

I'd keep the front of the existing shirt (red shirt of course)
The back would say vivaelbirdos.com across the top like it does now.
Underneath that you’d have all the players nicknames we’ve given them. You’d either…
1 list the starting 9 plus pitchers in 2 rows, like a list of concert dates
2. list the starting names on a diamond, like you might see at the start of a TV broadcast.
3. Just list the whole roster of nicknames, just in case there are funny nicknames who aren’t starters that you don’t wanna leave out.

Maybe something like this
I’m trying to figure out a way to make it not about the art, but about the fact that the site has so much awesome content.
I think the first thing I guess I should change is that the back of the shirt should not have any caps. I can’t really include, say, a 3500 word post from RB. Maybe I could include some snappy quote about statistics or something.
WHOA! maybe some haiku? Something about Pineiro.
by sdrone on Jul 21, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
not about a player who probably won't be here next season, please.
The Dan and Al “you know, it really is” meme would be an interesting one to include. A haiku would be nice (we could have a competition?).
I’m really liking the “Pop Culture, Statistics, Philosophy, Haiku” slogan though. It’s a winner.
