draft thread is directly below the game thread. overflow game thread scheduled for ~ 7:30 pm st louis time.

since he smashed face-first into that wall, rick ankiel has struck out once for every 3 plate appearances; prior to getting hurt, he only fanned once per 5 PA. ryan ludwick's numbers are considerably more stable ---- 6 PA/K before he got hurt, and 5 PA/K afterward. seems like maybe he's just got to get his timing back, whereas ankiel ain't seeing the ball at all . . . ..

anyway, ludwick's sitting tonight and ankiel is hitting 5th. rasmus bats cleanup. oh hell, here are the full lineups:

hombre 1b hanley ss
rasmus cf cantu 1b
ankiel rf hermida rf

yeah, this quote from TLR really pisses me off though

"If he struggles, we’ll move him back. It’s hard for me to see because he’s going to hit fourth a couple times he’ll be wrecked the rest of the year. If that happens, he’s not as good as we think he is."

he’s not as good as we think? he’s the only manager in the game that can dog the future of the franchise & not be held accountable for it. unfuckingbelieveable.

he really said that?

Where does he get off doubting one our best projected players and then continues to back horses like Dunc and Ank who are failing to produce anything at all?

How is he allowed to say that?

Not to mention the pressure of putting a 22 year old rookie behind

one of the best (if not the best) hitter in the game? Fucking ridiculous.

"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter

He's saying

that Colby is so good, and such a pro, that batting him 4th isn’t going to mess with him or his approach.

"If I prepare myself, my stuff is good and I'm going to get outs. That is a fact." - Chris Carpenter

by spants on Jun 9, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

here's the entire quote

"It’s a deal I would prefer not to do," La Russa said. "But if you start counting up the number of guys we need to get going, it’s that number versus one guy. From what I’ve seen, Colby is a cool customer and go about it the right way. If he struggles, we’ll move him back. It’s hard for me to see because he’s going to hit fourth a couple times he’ll be wrecked the rest of the year. If that happens, he’s not as good as we think he is."

first he says he does not want to, then he says he needs to, then he says if he doesn’t hit he’s not as good as we think he is. what am i misunderstanding?

by gdm426 on Jun 9, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

He said...

and i paraphrase, that he doubts Rasmus will be wrecked for the rest of the year if he struggles in the 4 hole.

by stlfan on Jun 9, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, I understand now

I needed the full quote, he’s saying that he’s been so easygoing and is one of the players on this team who does not look like he is pressing and that if just because hes batting 4th makes him lose his edge, he’s not as good as Tony thinks he is…

Although its a nice quote, TLR should not have said the last part because if Colby does fail behind Albert, people will come back to this quote.

Brought to you by Karl's Jr.

by The_teague on Jun 9, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

he's just saying

that if the pressure of batting 4th in a few games will wreck Rasmus’s mental capacities, he’s probably not gonna make it. not the best quote in the world, makes him sound like he’s kind of out of it

Yeah, as I noted just a second ago....

Even if Colby wasn’t feeling pressure to hit as it is, now he does because if he doesnt produce in the 4 hole, apparently Tony thinks he isn’t good…

why say he’s not as good as we think he is unless Tony really believes that?

Rasmus should be hitting 2nd

and Ludwick batting 4th. Luddy hasn’t hit well since his DL stint but I completely believe he will come around. Duncan and Ankiel on the other hand have stunk for too long now. They need to be seeing more time in the dug out. If Mather can get going at all we need to bring him or Craig up SOON!

Ryan and T. Greene up the middle for the rest of the year. Trade Shumaker and bring in a real 3rd baseman with a real bat.

LMAO

Tony can’t win with some of you. Now it is too much pressure on the rook hitting 4th? Which is it, do you want him playing, and being put in a position to the help the team, his mental state be damned, or do you want him protected?

Say you were standing with one foot in the oven and one foot in an ice bucket. According to the percentage people, you should be perfectly comfortable." - Manager Bobby Bragan

by SoonerfanTU on Jun 9, 2009 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

If you would go up and read our secondary posts, you would see we misread his quotes...

1st of all: Colby should not be batting 4th. He’s not a cleanup hitter, but because of our current situation, we have to.
2nd: Its not the pressure of the position we are worried about, its the fact that Tony has already said that if Colby doesnt produce, ’he’s not as good as we think he is’ that bothers me. Colby hasnt even gotten a chance to try and Tony has already put th epressure on him by saying that.
3rd: I haven’t found a single post by you yet that has been useful in any way.

by The_teague on Jun 9, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

why are you here?

seriously? all you do is pick fights with people who dare say something bad about Tony. he said something really stupid about the future of the team, and we are just supposed to ignore it?

i’m a big TLR fan, but it’s stuff like this & playing Dick & Dunk over Ludwick that really make me wonder just what the hell he is thinking sometimes.

by ducttape16 on Jun 9, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

and that would have been fine.

if the guy impeded rick’s progress, even if rick puts his shoulder down and flattens him while he’s trying to fie4ld the ball, rick still gets the next base. I can’t think of any interpretation of the rule that would be otherwise.

Have they clarified anything? This is probably grounds for protesting this game, if we lose.

i can't watch it

but from your descriptions, that has to be “obstruction”. if the fielder didn’t have the ball in the basepaths and touched the runner, the runner HAS to be awarded the next base.

The only thing that makes sense would be if the runner went out of the base path.

When Shelly Long was on there, I could do nothing but yell at my TV.

“Fire he Sam!” turned into “Kill her Sam!” I really had an irrational hatred of Shelly Long, even to the point that I resisted seeing The Money Pit. Of course once I watched that movie, I saw her in a totally different light, but to this day if I see Cheers re-runs with her, I want Sam to kill her.

i mean, this guy is traipsing around europe, sending pictures back to this girl who is all hung up on him. why isn’t she with him? its not like she’s doing anything better – she’s sitting around windowsills waiting for him to text.
