How did the pig corner the breakfast market?

by STLRegalia on Jun 8, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but I'm making the point that this team is falling into a tailspin...

And before we all realize it, we will be 5+ games out by July, 10+ out by the trade deadline, making to far too late to make an impact.

Brought to you by Karl's Jr.

by The_teague on Jun 8, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what one player makes up 10 games then?

At some point you’ve got to realize that this team has to no suck regardless of whether or not a trade is made.

by TheBirds on Jun 8, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You guys are missing my point....

As of right now, we still have a chance to shake things up and not let this thing get out of hand. But as I see it, we will make no moves, the offense will continue to stale, the pitching staff will try too hard, and more AAA players will be called up. Thus continuing our slide.

A move may light a fire under a couple of guys asses.

Brought to you by Karl's Jr.

by The_teague on Jun 8, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so signing a bat will fix the pitching and the hitting?

and shift the momentum completely.

Maybe you expect too much.

by TheBirds on Jun 8, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Again, same title...

I’m not talking about fixing anything, because I dont think anything is broke. This team lacks fire, lacks the competitive nature.

There are a few players that suck….and they need to get the fuck out.

I get your point

but it’s not like making a trade on my xbox. There has to be a trading partner that isn’t asking for too much. Other teams know the Cardinals are desperate, so they are probably asking for all the cows and chickens on the farm.

I think

the biggest issue was how much money they gave him and they wouldn’t resign Burrell. Plus, NO ONE but Ibanez himself thought he’d be playing this well.

This catcher isn't very good.

Besides, when your team is having a hard time stringing together multiple hits, you need to get guys in scoring position in ways other than relying on the hit.

Smart play

otherwise it takes an extra base hit to score him with two outs. Besides even if he was thrown out, Schu leads off the next inning.

I simply don't get how you can give it to Skip there.

I mean, I’m glad Yadi doesn’t get tagged for it, but that’s his error. Sure, you could say that if Skip covers the bad (and who’s to say Boog shouldn’t have been covering the bag), then there isn’t an error, but that’s not how its supposed to work.

and I heard them talking about it

but sorta got caught up in writing this stuff so I wasn’t positive if they were saying it was scored and error on skip or it should have been an error on skip.

Either way, I expect Al to know the damn scoring rules. But, I still can’t figure out why it’s an earned run. It shouldn’t be, but it falls into a grey area.

how about

Being aggressive has nothing to do with swinging at balls.

by Evilfrog on Jun 8, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i don't think i can say it better than this.
“I didn’t think we were as aggressive as we usually are on pitches that we had to hit. So you sit around on a one-run lead and put yourself in a position for that to happen. We didn’t look like quite ourselves for whatever reason.”

Now, there are two ways to interpret that. The first is that the Cardinals were off balance against Reyes all night, and they didn’t take good swings on hittable pitches. That is very true. I’m hoping that’s what was meant by it. But what I do worry about is that word aggressive. We all know that La Russa preaches aggressiveness in the batter’s box, not in a crazed, let’s-not-clog-the-bases Dusty Baker sort of way, but aggressiveness nonetheless. He wants his hitters to attack that first good pitch they see. What I worry about is somehow the message in this being that the team needed to go out there and attack more aggressively, that they were somehow too passive. Tony is absolutely right in saying that the Cards didn’t look like what we’ve come to expect from them this season; the answer, though, isn’t more aggressive at-bats, it’s more patient at-bats. The Cardinals rank as highly as they do in so many offensive categories precisely because they have a tremendous on-base percentage as a team this year. Trying to be more aggressive at the plate isn’t the answer, being more selective and swinging only at pitches you can actually do something with is.

back in the main post on April 29, the red baron interpreted tony’s statement with a great deal of concern. since then, we’ve swung at far too many bad pitches. i see the same connection between “aggression” and a low walk rate that RB did six weeks ago.

Some math, please. What does the average Cards' ticket cost - ticket price, concessions, parking?

What’s the average paid attendance? May be the worst economic situation since .. . . ..;?

Speaking of the economic situation (a little off topic, I don't think it's political)

I went to the local theater to see The Hangover last night. It cost $9 to go see that movie. Before the movie, Carmike cinemas ran a commercial promoting their “American stimulus package” which consisted of like $1 popcorn and $1 coke on Tuesday nights or something like that. I was so pissed that they were advertising for a stimulus package and saying they were some saviors or something when they charged me nine freaking dollars to see a movie.

I hear you

We went to UP yesterday at 1115 a.m. The cheapest tickets were $8.50 for a kids’ matinee ticket. Then they handed me a coupon which gave me the right to purchase a box of candy for $2.50! if I bought one of their “value deals” which start at the low price of about $11. Then we went into the theater and couldn’t find seats. Its amazing to me how well the theaters at least appear to be doing.

And don’t get me started about the Mini-IMAX experience they sold me for $16 to see Star Trek.

by OCCardsFan on Jun 8, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's surprising.

I live in the Chicago suburbs (in one of the more affluent areas….but I’m far from being fluent) and the most expensive ticket is $9. I often go on Saturday or Sunday mornings when the matinee tix are either 6 or 5 bucks.

But, I agree the price of popcorn and soda is ridiculous. I could buy a 20 pound bag of popcorn kernels for the price of the small bag they sell.

A bit late to the show here, but I own a theater, so I have to speak up

First-run multiplex theaters only keep, on average, 10 to 20% of the box office revenue. They probably pocketed $1 from your $9 ticket, and even with a sold out show, that’s not going to cover the payroll, utilities, lease, etc.. Theater only make money from concessions, which is exactly why they charge you $5 for a bag of popcorn that costs them less than a quarter to make. As long as 30% of the audience buys concessions, theaters will be fine, but ticket costs/profits don’t factor into the equation.

Good post. Who profits then? If theaters keep $1/9 who receives the bulk of the ticket price?

In Bangkok a movie costs about $4 - you get a reserved seat that is very comfortable. Kanom (snacks) are cheap. . . but

you have to sit through about 45 minutes of propaganda. . .

Doomsday scenario running through my brain:

Cards keep up teh suck, attendance drops off, FO uses that as evidence that the economy is affecting the bottom line (more so than the general shittiness of the team), more “standing pat” before the trade deadline, another inactive offseason and another payroll rollback, goodbye Albert—>killself. In fact, this team is playing so poorly it’s almost convinced me a trade isn’t even worth it this season, so why give up the prospects.

This blows. I can take losing. I could even understand being swept here and there but

to be swept in a 4 game series by the Rockies is sucky, sucky, bad, bad.

Someone needs to reboot the offense.

2, 3 and 4-game series sweeps at home this year. If the NL loses the All-Star game, does that count for the cycle?

What is this.....

A full, 5 man bench, and we’re still getting our butts kicked?

If only we had one more pitcher

That would certainly help this offense.

by OCCardsFan on Jun 8, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Couple of things...

First, love the snooty tone. Much appreciated by everyone, especially in the midst of a losing streak.

Second, of course a 5 man bench isn’t going to make us magically score 25 runs per game. Your line of thinking and “I told you so attitude” is really ridiculous. You are implying that despite unquestionably making the team and offense better, having a 5-man bench is worthless. By that line of logic, we might as well trade away Albert, Ludwick, and Wainwright for a season’s supply of those awesome turkey legs because, hey, we’re gonna get our butts kicked anyway!!!!!!!!!! Might as well not worry about being better!!! MMMmmmm!!!

Third, Boyer was claimed by the D’backs according to reports. Defend DFA’ing him. Even you must admit at this point that TLR and MO have royally screwed the pooch in regards to roster management this season.

And before you start, let’s have a little fun. See if you can construct a valid argument NOT based around your ill-conceived notion that a 5-man bench doesn’t unequivocally make this team better. It is a waste of interweb words and has been set to rest by FACTS. Also, please refrain from resorting to the “TLR and MO know something we don’t!” line. That argument : SoonerFan :: Ankiel : TLR. I explained why that line of reasoning is wrong already and do not wish to repeat myself.

But they lost today.

That means all factors present in today’s team are, without question, 100% wrong. Albert wore the collar, hence he is over the hill and let’s put him in pin stripes before he hits replacement-level talent (by my calculations, Thursday). We were embarrassed offensively and where was Carpenter? On the bench not contributing, that’s where. Time to send his ass the way of Andy Benes already and pay him to go away.

We were doing so well, why didn’t we just stay the course?

mlbtraderumors.com - Boyer claimed by dbacks

According to Arizona Republic via mlbtraderumors D Backs have claimed Boyer off of waivers. This makes no sense since the Cards DFA’d him on June 4th and have until June 11th to place him on waivers. Why would the Front Office put him on waivers three days early?

that Boyer was such a talent, are you?

The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me

by heathen on Jun 8, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

I’m suggesting that Brian Barton had value as an outfielder but any value he had was wasted on a trade for a right handed reliever. A position the team already had in abundance. Now said reliever is gone with nothing to show for it.

by Walking Underwear on Jun 8, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Playing devils advocate/perspective guy

we probably all slightly over-rate Barton based on the fact he was likeable and had one good season (with absolutely zero power and a suspiciously high BABIP) in which he was merely average in a small sample size. He’s never hit much in the minors, despite having some tools. I don’t really think we’d have ever got much for him, but it’s a shame we got ABSOLUTELY nothing for him. I don’t think it’s as bad as the reyes situation, as reyes was actually a prospect at one point…
