pitch to contact. So frustrating. Have they hit one ball well yet this inning? 4 straight crappy singles, 2 runs, 2 on, no outs. Game over.

Damn it!

realistically

it’s at least 4-2 at the end of this inning, if perez pitches well.

With our offence, I’m thinking climbing back into this one will be hard.

LF made an amazing catch off a pujols no-doubter double/triple

fell into the wall, flipped the ball to CF. Rasmus made a heads-up play at 2B, holding on the catch and tagging up, and got home on the flip/throw to the cutoff man.

Albert hit a really deep line drive to left,

the fielder caught it at the wall and tumbled over. the runners tagged, the fielder took a long time getting the ball in, and Colby ran really fast.

The only real problem for this team right now is the lack of offense.

I’m OK with Pineiro and Welley pitching to contact if only our batters can have more than two hits against a mediocre pitcher as Jimenez.

tbh, pin and welly last two starts haven’t been so bad. Both got a little unlucky (welly happened to give up his 2 HR when pretty much the only other guys he put on base happened to be on, and pineiro gave up a ton of pretty soft GB hits)

The annoying thing is

know how we solve this BS against RH pitchers? Schumaker in left field, Rasmus in centre, Ludwick in right. Thurston at 2B, someone new at 3B, Ryan/Greene at SS.

So if we, say, CRAZILY play everyone in their actual positions, this problem goes away.

Oh, also, if we don’t carry 8 men in the bullpen we might be able to burn pinch-hitters in really important at-bats. Like that one ankiel just K’d in.

Needy, needy

Well I have all the respect in the world for Ankiel. What he’s done has made my Cardinal heart proud. Having said that, he needs to get out of the lineup and into a situation where he can work on his game. The Post article saying he was coming around was a joke. Do those people actually watch the games? Anyone looking at Ankiel the last six games could not possibly conclude that he was figuring out squat.
Mo, the position players batting behind Albert in this game are 0 for 15, with 5 K’s. Get something done.

one step forward, two back

having watched the last couple of games, i DO feel that ankiel was showing some (very early) signs of life. But he’s sucked again tonight. Thing is, only one of him or dunc should be playing, at all, at the moment. And they shouldn’t be hitting 2, or 4.

pretty sure his FIP is pretty much replacement level. I reckon he can turn it around and i’m not too worried about our pen, but I do feel TLR mis-uses them at times. When you have 8 men and TLR as a manager the WHOLE POINT of that is to take advantage of favourable match-ups; so why is KMac facing a lefty in a high-leverage, late inning situation when we have reyes and miller available? Not Al

First of all, I did not “rant” at Colby Rasmus. I want to see him play more, but that won’t happen as long as he keeps giving his appearance of a lack of hustle on defense. Everybody knows that Tony loves hustle. Rasmus doesn’t charge the ball in center field and he lobs the ball back into the infield far too often. (Many times this does not change the outcome of a particular play, but over the course of a year it will several times and Tony knows this.

You can’t pick a guy on this team to “rant” about. It is a giant collective sucking sound coming from their dugout. However, if I am going to rant, I would start with Jay Randolph. The sound of his voice makes me want to change the channel.

This past month the team keeps springing leaks

Just when you’ve got one leak stopped, another starts.

I wouldn’t really credit TLR for anything this year, this year has been the worst I’ve seen him manage. Yet another game Ludwick or Rasmus sits. Skip is still at second.

by TheBirds on Jun 7, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Slump

The past few games could be considered a slump.

However, the offense is beyond a slump. They have been awful for almost a month and a half solid.

Is Hal McRae nervous yet? He should be. The only guys hitting are the ones he really doesn’t do much with.

How about handin' me another helpin' of those mashed taters...thank you very much!

by Elvis on Jun 7, 2009 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

Some of this falls on TLR

he doesn’t play the best players or the hot hand consistantly. Just look at today’s lineup. No Ludwick, no Greene. That just takes hits out of the lineup. TLR refuses to play Rasmus against lefties because of some small sample size BS, but has no problem trotting Duncan or Skip out there time after time.

It’s pretty easy for a decent pitcher like today to navigate deep into the game. He’ll have 3 near automatic outs in the ice cold Duncan and Ankiel + the pitcher. Beyond that there is a bunch of MIF players to contend with.

Also it doesn’t really matter if the offense gets better, because you will still have major holes in the defense at 3rd and short.

Basically I don’t like TLR and probably never will.

by TheBirds on Jun 7, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure that TLR would LOVE an everyday lineup come what may. He probably feels

that he has to tinker with the cast of clunkers assembled. He has a track record of preferring experienced players over promising young ones. Yet Cards lead the league in rookies player (and players on the anxiety DL). Tough TLR times indeed

An optimist is a man who upon discovering that a rose smells better than a cabbage concludes it will make better soup.

HL Mencken

by akaitori on Jun 7, 2009 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

There is tinkering and there is benching Ludwick

There is tinkering and there is completely ignoring the defense.

I think we could have at least a couple more wins if we had a manager who didn’t try to get to cute and just played the best players. I usually think managers don’t really impact a game, but most managers have the good sense to start their best players. I don’t know when TLR went all lineup crazy.

by TheBirds on Jun 7, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Tony

He is the ultimate “tinker” man. I am sometimes surprised he doesn’t platoon Albert. While most other teams carry 11 pitchers, this team carries 13 so that he can use 5 or 6 per game. If he had 13 position players he would be double-switching and platooning like a maniac.

I do think he is one of the best ever at getting the best out of his bench players, but there are times when I wish he would just stick with a few guys and give them a chance to get a rhythm going. Ludwick should be in there everyday. Unless he gets going, this team can’t go anywhere.

I think Tony will leave at the end of this contract. He is too close to the end of his career to put up with having teams full of rookies and a front office that is unwilling to go get the little pieces here and there that he needs to compete.

Position Players

Colby Rasmus – 177 PAs – 1.8 WAR
Ryan Ludwick – 154 PAs – .6 WAR
Rick Ankiel – 126 PAs – .3 WAR
Chris Duncan – 195 PAs – .4 WAR

I’m surprised there isn’t more talk of the constant shuffling of players in the mainstream media. For all that some players prefer to hit in certain spots, we’ve heard nothing about the constant juggling that TLR does with the outfield and the lineup. (I’m not an adherent to the lineup position thinking but many are.)

Perhaps part of the reason that the team struggles is the constant movement in position, lineup spot and just playing time that goes on because of LaRussa. To me, Colby Rasmus and Ryan Ludwick should be daily mainstays in the outfield. Rasmus is head and shoulders above the rest of the outfield crop right now (in large part due to defense — he’s still projecting as a +3 defensive player) that it shouldn’t even be a quesiton. Ludwick is the only other outfielder that you could expect to be any kind of an impact player. Dear STL P-D, make this more of an issue. It needs to be hashed out.

And maybe Rasmus'

Stats wouldn’t look so good if he were playing everyday, going up against guys that he might not matchup against. His numbers vs lefties this year are terrible. OPS wise, considerably worse than Duncan’s, and about the same as Rick’s.

And this ain't the minors.....

Any decent lefty is pitching in the Bigs. Doubt Raz was facing much in the way of decent lefties in the minors.

Well

Duncan’s splits vs lefties in the minors – poor. Rasmus’ – pretty good. I think it’s a fair point that pitchers, in general, are better in the majors, but rasmus has had a pretty good split vs lefties his whole career and so you’d expect that to translate to the majors. His major league splits so far vs LHP are so small as to be practically meaningless. The dude has 38 at-bats against left-handed pitching.

We already know dunc and ankiel can’t hit lefties. Rasmus is a much better fielder than either of them, and he has shown (albeit at a lower level) that he can. He’s worth playing vs lefties for that reason. He should be our every day centre fielder. Although I realise you think he “hasn’t earnt it”.

actually

maybe i’ve done dunc a slight disservice there, he wasn’t THAT bad against lefties in the minors:

Duncan minor league OPS
vs LHP .758
vs RHP .824

Ankiel minor league OPS
vs LHP .842
vs RHP .879

Rasmus minor league OPS
vs LHP .826
vs RHP .860

However, Raz has hit & fielded better than both of them this year, and he’s done it with a .286 BABIP which will surely go up. His hitting stats would probably be hurt by making more PAs against LHP, but he’d gain overall value (i.e. more PAs and more time on field to gain defensive value = more overall value) so he’d probably be over 2 wins by now.

I realise there’s an argument that tony doesn’t want to expose the rookie to situations where he might fail (facing LHP), and that’s fair enough and an entirely valid argument. However, he’s the best CF, our most valuable OF this year, and one of the top prospects in baseball. He’s shown he can handle the major leagues. It’s not time to “protect” him in favour of two guys who are sinking fast – he needs to be playing everyday.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

wow, good for Dunc.

That is actually a lot better than I would have thought.

by TheBirds on Jun 7, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

i cant believe anyone would still defend not starting Rasmus everyday over a platoon of Dunc and Ankiel

ridiculous….if anything he needs ML experience vs. lefties. Not playing isn’t going to help him improve.

Go drink some more Kool-Aid.

Maybe they wouldn't.

But when things aren’t working, shouldn’t you at least put your best players on the field and presume they’ll succeed rather than presume they’ll fail? You’ve got no evidence to suggest he’d actually be worse and, to date, there IS evidence he’s been better.

there is a growing consensus

about Rasmus playing nearly every day (I am and remain a charter member)… BUT, with LaRussa it probably ain’t going to happen. But with me (and I know with other fans too) it’s not just the grrrr of a good talent not getting his chance to learn from his mistakes… it is how obviously inefficient Ankiel, and to a slightly less degree Duncan, have become.
Rick is really making me sick with his Tino Martinez-esque over-swinging and trying to muscle everything and his extremely poor plate discipline.
As for Dunc, Cowboy Jeff Brantley just blurted it out in the recent series vs. Cincy; namely, never throw him a fast ball (except maybe to show him a waste pitch outside) because little Dunc CANNOT hit a breaking ball. Granted his eye and plate discipline aren’t as bad as Ankiel’s, but add in his defense (ha)… more like a disaster ready to happen at any time, and, well there ya go.
If Tony wants to ‘protect’ Rasmus from time to time, ok, but at least do it with someone other than Ankiel or Duncan. As someone above alluded… maybe Colby can’t hit lefties consistently yet… but we KNOW Chris and Rick can’t.

There's a valid point here

both dunc and ank have major, consistent weaknesses, holes in their swings. It could just be (at least to some extent) that the book on them is increasingly widespread. It’s also easier to throw them the pitches that they’re weak against when they’re slumping and the rest of the team is too.

Just throw duncan sliders/breaking balls, esp. away, and he’s not gonna hit with any power (and, while he’s pressing, not walking much). Ank can’t hit high fastballs, or catch up to any sort of heat really with his swing when he’s struggling. You can’t help but feel that they’re both very pitchable – they’re mistake hitters.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

What media?

The St. Louis media is either afraid of Tony yelling at them at press conferences, is an old school sort of baseball person that believes in hustle and agressiveness, not sabermetrics and so loves Tony*. Or is basically on the Cardinals payroll in some form or another.

*I actually got banned from the STL P-D forums for a sarcastic statement about being surprised that anyone there (besides Goold) had even heard about fangraphs *after BernieM mentioned it briefly in a blog post). Touchy, touchy.

And the national media...

can’t be bothered to pay attention. They have a short attention span outside the Yankees/Red Sox.

by DiscoJer on Jun 7, 2009 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

bernice will ban anyone for looking crosseye at the monitor

he’s a little bitch when it comes to that place

it’s a combo of both. hummel, strauss & gordon don’t care about stats & are TLR lemmings. Bernie & Goold are the only guys who care about stats, but have no spine to stand up or call the Cards out for fear of the team & fans calling for their heads. Bernie had to blow up with Tony once, but ever since then he’s bent over for Tony & gone out of his way to kiss his ass.

it really is pathetic. most fans are clueless & the media doesn’t help by not having the cojoes to go up against the team. so they constantly get away with murder.

I am ready for Adam Dunn. At this point I don't care about his defense. Give me that OBP and 40 homeruns behind Albert.

We need runs.

One contradictory note. If you coach, pitch - pitch to contact inducing ground balls, the team has an obligation to field a decent defense.

Izzy2 and Kennedy stank at the plate, but at least they were ++ defenders. This team stinks at the plate and is – - defensively. Pitchers must feel anxious each time a fly ball goes in the direction of the Duncster or a grounder goes anywhere other than Albert.

If either Thurston or Schu could hit like Dunn and protect Albert I would absolutely love them right now.

so... when do we start asking what the hitting coach is doing?

clubhouse morals is low?

gee, you think Bernie? i gotta wonder where he’s getting his info. this sounds like rampant speculation to me. like he just walked through the clubhouse sunday afternoon & he saw some heads down & suddenly it hit’s him. huzzah! i’ll write they are sad & MO’s about to lose his team! if i think it, it must be true!

you don’t make a move just to make a move. you don’t give up Walrus, Motte, or YP for a guy that will cause Tony to put Ludwick on the bench next to Colby. that’s just stupid. like carrying 13 pitchers stupid.

his brilliance amazes me. playing Colby more will help the OF’s numbers go up? no f’ing way!

in sadder news, apparently the Reds have a player with issues similar to KBots. this sucks. and not just because Votto is a hell of a talent like KBot. Greinke, Willis, Kbot & now Votto are the latest players with emotional issues, really make you wonder how many players this type of situation has happened to in the past? did Rick also have these problems? what about what happened to chuck knoblauch?

I didn't know that about Votto

I thought it was a residual ear infection (affecting balance) following a bad case of the flu; it appears there may be more to it than that. I saw him in Louisville…he’s a stick!

They're

probably all anxiety-related issues, but I doubt everyone on that list is practicing “self-punishment” like KG.

Oh, and I think Rick still has issues.

I have the answer to our offensive woes...

Everyone but Pujols and Schu will bat opposite of what they normally do.

Turn Dunc and Ank around and let them hit from the right side.

What is the worst that could happen? They strike out?
