Game 55 Open Thread: Rockies at Cardinals

Colorado Rockies at St. Louis Cardinals, Jun 5, 2009 8:15 PM EDT

De La Rosa Wainwright
0-6, 5.43 5-3, 3.38

Jorge De La Rosa is one of the toughest-lucked pitchers in baseball thus far. He strikes out a batter an inning, he allows just four home runs despite playing in the house that Bichette Happens built—overall he has a FIP of 3.64—and for his trouble he's got a 5.43 ERA and zero wins. Also, he plays for the Rockies.

Meanwhile, Renovated Wainwright has an ERA of 2.05. I'm thinking about asking Chris Carpenter for some life advice.

Thurston

So I was telling my husband that Thurston is expected to leave the club any day now, per the official website, for the birth of his child. My husband thinks he’s crazy to leave in the middle of the season; Thurston is commiting career suicide; there must be some potential complications with the birth causing Thurston to leave; ball players NEVER leave in the season for the birth of a child, etc. I agree that players don’t usually do this, but do people think he’ll really lose that roster spot? And…I think it is nice and progressive of him to take some time to be with the wife when she gives birth to HIS child. Anyone have insights into this?

Seems like half the time Villone came in to face a lefty last year he walked him then was yanked.
Of course Reyes wasn’t yanked – he gave up a hit and is about to walk the freaking pitcher for a run….

Why do I keep believing in this team?

I’m so pumped that we’ve already lost a game to the fucking Rockies, with the holy trinity of Thompson, Pineiro, and Wellemeyer going the next 3 days. Nothing like praying for a split against a last place team at home.

Good enough to hang in for 4 or 5 months before the inevitable collapse. That’s exactly where we’re headed again, but I keep convincing myself otherwise. There is nothing to get excited about this team right now other than Carp and Albert and Colby.

Time to see if this Southern Comfort

is enough to comfort me for the night. Somehow I doubt it.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

Who is due up?

Perfect, really

Sadly that sums up our at bats. I long for the days of MV3.

They x-rayed my head and didn't find anything.

wait

i forgot that the cardinals got to bat

rally?

hooray?

by prophetjohn on Jun 5, 2009 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

We've got 9 more outs

That should be good for a hit or two.

by BTown Birds fan on Jun 5, 2009 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

That was meant to be a reply to prophetjohn

I post comments as badly as the Cards play ball tonight.

by BTown Birds fan on Jun 5, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

ah yes

albert gets to bat again

can we just let him bat once and then be done with it?

by prophetjohn on Jun 5, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

really, i can handle a bullpen collapse every once in a while

but another on run game against a fucking awful pitcher is just unforgivable. the cardinals entering tonight’s game in first place is an embarrassment to the nl central and major league baseball

by prophetjohn on Jun 5, 2009 10:37 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

it's the run support for the starters

they’ve got to feel like they’ve gotta go out there and throw nothing but zeros every inning just to give this minor league lineup a chance.

by nota bene on Jun 5, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

i know

watching adam throw in the 6th it seemed like he was the only one playing against the rickies tonight

by prophetjohn on Jun 5, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

also

i propose the colorado team change their name to the rickies

by prophetjohn on Jun 5, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Nine runs

in one inning? Isn’t that like a week’s worht of runs for the Cardinals’ high powered offense?

If I see the serious commercial I may kill someone...

I say they stop running it until the Cardinals prove the can handle the responsibility of having a promotion based on high scoring games.

Demote Barden.
Bring up Mather.
Thurston to the Bereavement list .
Bring up Craig.

Mather is not hitting in AAA

he’s had 2 good games, and then he’s gone back to stinking it up.

oh and Craig isn't hitting either

we need answers outside of the organization, we have no one in our minor league system who will make a difference right now.

Walk-athon in the 7th turned into 9 runs...

Offense was shockingly AWOL again until they trailed 11-1…
