Game 53 Overflow

<Fingers crossed>

[azru update:] Lohse lifted for Boyer due to continuing forearm tightness.  This sounds like it was an ongoing problem the cardinals were hoping to avoid. . . and didn't.  Surprise, Surprise.

PS -- Boyer needs to step it up.  Even before Looper and Wellemeyer were transformed into starters, they were transformed into non-crappy relievers.  Go, Go magic pixie dust.

so my hope of seeing Randy Johnson's 300th win got killed by rain

however, i was able to spot Johnson jerseys from every team but Houston. Somehow I had managed to forget that he used to play for AZ. And the Expos Johnson vs. the Nats? That’s just mean.

About 137%

Unless Paletta examines him. Then he’ll prescribe two weeks of rest, no DL, and THEN Lohse will shred his elbow.

But he’ll be day to day.

He's got good stuff but I'm not sure I think it's that much better than say Mitchell Boggs

who is already stretched out and under team control for more years. I’d rather the Cardinals not spend the entire year piddling around with a guy if it costs us games (not saying that it has yet but that it could). I’d rather have seen them DL Lohse and call up a starter from AAA.

I’m drunk off my ass attempting to watch this at 3 AM Prague time having gotten home via the sketchiest cab ride home in my life. If you’ve never been in a Hyundai not marked as a cab with a guy who offers you all kinds of drugs in a different language and then gets lost in the middle of nowhere (fields and shit) despite being in an urban setting, let’s just say it’s unsettling. At least it only cost me $3. In any case I haven’t been able to catch many Cards games, so:

-How has Ludwick looked since coming back from the DL
-Likewise with Ankiel
-Are the Cubs actually just a .500 team or worse (fingers crossed)
-How did the LeBronaliers lose???

1) Timing wrong on Ludwick..swinging at more balls than he normally does, but not a huge amount
2) Ankiel timing wrong, swinging at more balls than he normally does, not making hard contact on anything pretty much. 1-19? or so with 8? K’s?
3) F the Cubs, no matter their record

and you can’t buy beer in many areas after midnight. some places still don’t allow any kind of alcohol sales on sundays.

Roller skates on Ankiel and that collision would’ve had him paralyzed. Anyone think he might still be playing hurt? I wish the offense would be kind enough to put out a notice on the days they are going to be pathetic

so I’ll know when I have to sit through 3 hours of suck.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

how little activity is going on downtown despite the Allstar game being in STL? This place is going to be the same ragtag set of bars it always is prior to an additional 25,000 people (plus a shiny new softball field).

I still

really like the section of local, real, organic, crappy bars just southeast of the stadium — BBs, Broadway, etc. And the ones southwest of the stadium, while douchey, are at least local. If they could surround the north side of Busch with those types of places, I think Busch would already have that “neighborhoodish” feel they are going to spend millions to generically obtain someday. And it would actually be neighborhood places.

If you inhale quickly as hard as you can on a virtually empty bottle of Budweiser, in an attempt to get every last drop, you will get an almost pure alcohol taste similar to that of drinking straight warm vodka, minus the burn of course.

I would

if a 6 pack weren’t $8 when I can buy 30 natty’s for $13. Only reason I’m drinking a Budweiser is that they have the special MLB ASG 2009 Cardinals bottles and cans out, of which I’m getting 1 of each for my collection of Cardinals stuff.

Although when I wind up at Busch I take an extra stroll in search of the Schlafly, which is $6.50 where I found it for what I think was a 12 oz. cup, as opposed to $7.75 for I think a 14 or 16 oz AB beer? I’ll take the better beer for a few ounces less, please.

weak grounder (Swinging bunt, kinda)

to the third base side, pitcher fields, throws to catcher, who blocks the plate and tags Molina on his belly. Ump says he’s safe.

I believe that call this case in point.

Bad Duncan

He dropped an F-bomb loud enough to drown out Dan’s voice.

Dunc

Take a seat, maybe you and Ankiel should have a tea party and go shopping for purses.

a little harsh

I think he’s a pretty smart player, just not the toolsiest.

by TheBirds on Jun 3, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Tony LaRussa and Dave Duncan were "smart" players too

It doesn’t mean they deserve a roster spot on a major league club.

He’s just an embarrassingly bad player. He’s the rare 0 tool player.

He's:

A .250 hitter
with has almost no power
who draws an occasional walk
who is one of the worst defensive OF in recent memory.

What does he add to this baseball team?

His isolated power

is above Chipper Jones and just below Bengie Molina. Not great, but definitly not almost none.

I'm a Duncan defender...

but now that I look it up, he’s got 10 home runs in his last 480 plate appearances. That’s a bad stretch.

by guayzimi on Jun 3, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Chris Shelton got hot once, too

It’s time to realize that Chris Duncan isn’t what he flashed in 2006. It was an aberration.

and the minor league numbers

there are guys who just take off once they hit the bigs though, it’s possible.

If he were an uber prospect I’d be a little more comfortable with that.

I just don't know if Duncan is a baseball player.

He’s not a good fielder, he can’t hit many pitches

by TheBirds on Jun 3, 2009 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

He can only hit fastballs...

or get lucky on a hook…thats it….His power is gone, his average dropped, his defense sucks….Nepotism.

no one had the guts to ask

just asked a bunch about Lohse. he jumped down jim hayes throat twice for dare asking why he didn’t go to the Dr he said he was going to. one comment about Lud pressing & Ank hitting into bad luck. asked one question about Boyer, said he saved the pen.

i would not take that crap from him, i really wouldn’t. no one said anything about Cobly, Boog’s bad base running, Dunk, or any of the 1000 other things wrong.

writing here on VEB every day & night apparently

i was yelling at the TV for them to ask about Colby v Ank, Dunk, Boog, etc. how can they get paid to watch the games & report on them & not ask these simple & obvious questions?

I wonder why they even have the press conferences after a loss

it seems to me that all Tony has to do is scowl and the entire room wets their pants

Question:

Is Lohse going to hurt himself on every weak hit to his left and every HBP?

Lohse is tougher than most

perhaps to a fault this time, wasn’t ready.

by TheBirds on Jun 3, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

postgame

TLR “upset about lineup questioning” because of Lohse health.

Um..I think they were going for lineup questioning on the line of Ankiel over Rasmus, Thurston at 3B, etc.

I can barely hear the questions the reporters asked, but TLR on the Ryan steal was something about “well you gotta get a good jump.” Couldn’t hear if they asked if he called it or not.

by leefyg on Jun 3, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that was the worst line of questioning by reporters ever...

There were so many other questions to ask, and all they did was talk about Lohse…Jesus.
