Cards acquire DeRosa!!!!

Just heard on BBTN and MLB Network that the Cards acquire Mark DeRosa from the Indians for Chris Perez and a player to be named later!!!!

This is GREAT news, and depending on who the player to be named later is, phenomenal trade for the Cards as the first shot across the bow is made in 2009!!

I think Perez has a great future, but between Motte and Perez, I like Motte better and one of them was expendable.  Anyone think Matt holiday is just around the corner as well?

A very solid trade

with the questions surrounding Perez’s velocity and command. I still think he’s got the potential to be a solid closer but he’s better off in another organization.

Az, I really value your opinion on players...

Is Motte and Perez essentially a push in talent (I think it was), so it was a ‘6 of one, half dozen of the other’ type scenario when discussing a trade, and what’s your gut tell you the PTBNL is?

Perez still has more upside than Motte.

I just don’t ever see Motte being more than a fastball guy. His slider (after 2+ years) still blows. It’s a terrible pitch.

Perez has two really good pitches in his fastball and slider. He has little command of them but the pitches (movement, velocity, etc) are already there. So in the present I think Motte and Perez are comparable players. In the future, Perez still has more upside for me.

And I have no idea on the PTBNL

They may be giving the Indians more time to scout low level players or to decide from a handful of C rated prospects. Until there’s more details, I don’t really have a clue. If the PTBNL winds up being one of the top 20 prospects, well, then we might have to slightly revise our opinion of the trade. Otherwise, I think this is one team trading to be better now and another team trading to be better next year.

+1

With this trade we upgrade from replacement level to a 3-win player (over a full season) at 3B, where with the Holliday trade we wouldn’t even be certain to be upgrading over Ludwick IMO. Plus DeRosa can actually get on base, please please please bat him 2nd in front of Pujols Tony.

Can DeRosa make STL tomorrow?

And will tony play him vs righties?

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

really

this is a fantastic trade.

derosa for perez and what, a class a starter?

doesn’t get much better than that

Well, the rumor was Ludwick, McClellan/Perez/Motte and someone else

So with Perez traded to Cleveland, do you get rid of another young gun and Luddy for Holliday?

I wouldn’t. You’re essentially trading a pwer hitter for a power hitter and another young gun. It would be a bad trade for the Cards, IMHO.

probably

and this was probably the more prudent deal

my guess is the indians were dragging their feet, so mo was like, “fine, what’s matt holliday up to?”

and then the indians unclenched their fists

I approve

I believe DeRosa is a better fit for this club, this year, than any other team. I think we gain a decent amount from this in the short run. Of course we risk losing in the long run, but I think we have traded from surplus here. We have righthanded bullpen arms throughout the organization. Personally I think Perez has the most upside between him, Motte, and McClellan, but he also has to improve his control a great deal to get there. I wasn’t seeing the progress yet, but he may very well get there.

What pushes it over the top for me is that I think we should be able to offer him arb, and find plenty of AB’s for him next year if he ends up accepting.

And people thought Mo wasn't gonna do anything.

Thumbs up for Mo.

Unless, of course, the PTBNL is Albert Pujols…who’s ridiculous, by the way.
