Game 75 Open Thread: Twins at Cardinals

Minnesota Twins at St. Louis Cardinals, Jun 26, 2009 8:15 PM EDT

Perkins Wainwright
2-4, 5.10 8-4, 3.58

Perkins is a Soft Tossin Lefty in everything but the actual velocity of his fastball, which does touch 90; hopefully that contradiction is enough to list the Cardinals' offense out of its southpaw doldrums.

Hate. Thurston.

Absolutely despise him. I don’t care about the arguments toward his athleticism or “good glove”, I cannot stand having him at third not making plays. We could just as well have Wallace there. However, Wallace would hit

Colby also had a lot better minor league track record

Wallace was playing with aluminum bats this time last year. He’s not ready, don’t be stupid.

by dcfcblues on Jun 26, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

How about giving the guy a shot?

Just like they did with Price. He is batting .268, Colby’s lifetime at AAA is .251 and lifetime at MILB is .277. This is a lot better. If Wallace is going to be your everyday 3B at ’10, you might as well give him a shot. Its not like our surplus of third basemen are doing wonders this year… It is the positin with the least batting production this year at St. Louis…

That's the thing I keep telling myself

A lot of our guys are struggling right now, but we haven’t even reached the halfway point yet. People wrote off Carlos Delgado early last season, then three months later he was being called an MVP candidate. Not saying Ank, Luddy, or any of the other guys who are struggling will make that kind of turnaround. But, there is still plenty of time for them to be productive players.

My last comment...

How can you have Pujols and suck at scoring?

We are looking like the Giants when they had Bonds for the last few years. We will make the playoffs but unless Wallace,Mateo.& Miller all go straight to the majors with much success we won’t last long in the post season. I hope I am wrong. It is ashame because a player like Pujols only comes along once in a lifetime and we should build around him and screw the future unless they can promise us another Pujols in 5 years.

Yeah. Your never gonna get a better player to build around than Albert.

If you can’t build a dynasty around Pujols then you should just resign. How many more years do we have and how long till these kids fill in? Sieze the day cause no matter how good your core player is he has only a finite exsistance.

If you can’t commit to help the games best hitter win some championships now then lets just get it over with and trade him now.

The worse thing is

that Pujols has expressed his desire to reamin with the Cardinals unless we stop becoming a competitive team. If we do not build around Pujols and get players to hit around Pujols and protect him, he might leave (which is the thing I fear the most in this world besides… bees)

Another retarded point...

Get a god damn Left handed pitcher to throw batting practice. I am tired of conceding games of Left handers because the staff doesn’t think it is a big deal to prepare for Left handed starters. With so many Left handed hitters you might want to get them some exposure to Left handed pitchers in non game situations so they are prepared for the game.

I am tired of watching this team get shutdown by nobody/somebody LH starters.

If you’re going to bunt, and I’m not saying you should, because you shouldn’t, GET THE DAGGONE BUNT DOWN. Nothing worse than handing away an out and getting nothing out of it. I mean, if he gets it down at least the tying run is at second.

…and now we have a DP when they set up a lefty/lefty matchup on Skip and he swings at the FIRST mother loving pitch. I’d almost rather lose 11-0 at this point! This is killing me.

I disagree with the idea that this team is awful.

Maybe we are just good enough that the only way we can lose is to face a shutdown closer. Cordero and Nathan are the cream of the crop. They make 9 innning games into 8 inning games.

The problem I have with this loss is the failure to score runs against the starter to avoid being put into the position of having to defy the Gods of Baseball in order to score a game winning run on an elite closer. Somebody needs to get some freaking scouting reports on these no names.

"Rasmus doesn't hit lefties. Instead he bashes them over the head with their own bleeding arm he just raced to the mound to rip off before the ball arrives to the plate. It's the team...

It’s a miracle their record is so good.

They’ve got 2 hitters with OBP’s over .350. Which in my mind, is the minimum for a major league hitter. Or should be.

Of course, one is almost .500. So it that’s why they aren’t in last place. But it’s just a bad team…

by DiscoJer on Jun 26, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

They had one run on four hits and like two walks. That’s 6 baserunners, give or take. SIX! That starter has a 5+ era and doesn’t throw hard enough to break glass. This isn’t a new thing either, as they’ve been scraping the bottom of the OBP barrel for two months, and the only times they’ve hit is when they face a horrible crew of Royals pitchers or when Marlins pitchers hang Ank curveballs. This team can’t and won’t score runs.

So what is your definition of bad?

Batting Aside.....

There are 3 truths to this years ballclub. One thing that we have come to expect of our Cardinals over the pas several years (whether winning or not) is that we had:

A.) Good defense (seriously, have we had a game without an error this year?)

B.) Good baserunning (* see Rasmus not advancing on the pitch that scooted away)

C.) Good fundamentals (* see Greene not getting the bunt down, setting up the double play).

This years club has yet to show me the little things that has made us a staple of success.

by One Flew Over The Cardinals Nest on Jun 26, 2009 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree...

the real reason the Cardinals having been successful is being in the worst division in baseball. If not in record, in talent.

That and having lucked into Pujols.

Those two factors still apply, which is why a team this bad can be in 1st place (or just out of it, as the case may be).

by prophetjohn on Jun 27, 2009 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Proven as what?

A product of his home park.

Holliday is currently mired in a 12-for-61 stretch with no homeruns.

If they trade for Holliday, that’s the only contract they can take on. He’ll account for $7 M on the books, which is roughly adding $5 million to payroll over all. That’s almost all the money they had left for adding players.

He won’t magically fix the offense, he will put the team in a worse situation financially going forward and we all know who he is replacing in the OF vs LHP. Colby Rasmus, not Chris or Rick.

Plus, we don’t even know who the prospect is. I’d imagine Beane sees that LaRussa is holding his breath and stomping his feet and will probably leverage us out of giving up Daryl Jones.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 27, 2009 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions

then by the same token

his current slump is a product of his home park. actually, i don’t buy either theory

they have more than $5mil in free payroll. i would estimate more like twice that

he won’t magically fix the offense, but he might provide a spark and make guys like albert not feel like they need to carry the whole team. and no, rasmus’ has plenty of job security. i’m sure he’ll still get days off, but i’m even more sure he’ll get 500 ABs

dj/wallace are not on the table. not a chance

by prophetjohn on Jun 27, 2009 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Why can Matt Holliday suddenly turn his season around

and provide a spark, but Ryan Ludwick can’t?

Not only that, but this makes the bullpen weaker by trading a RH reliever. All it means is that Hawksworth will have a full-time job PLUS another Memphis reliever since we know Tony will keep 13 out there.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 27, 2009 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions

i don't recall saying

that luds won’t turn it around. but he has had one great year. holliday has hit for average and power multiple years. i don’t care to see ludwick go either, but he’s not getting the job done right now and might not ever be the force that he was in ‘08 again. i forsee him being a .260 25 hr guy here on out at best. maybe that’s all holliday pans out to be.

the argument against dealing a reliever is a losing one. there is plenty of depth in the RHRP department. hawksworth is likely to keep his current role. and tony’s 13 pitcher power play will no longer be necessary. he carries 13 pitchers because he doesn’t think there’s a hitter in memphis worth being on the bench. even if he does keep 13 pitchers, though, there are plenty of guys capable of filling the role. one jess todd comes to mind as being entirely likely

by prophetjohn on Jun 27, 2009 1:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Matt Holliday has NOT been a proven hitter

he’s been proven to be above average at Coors Field. Outside of that, he’s shown to be about what you say. A .270, 25 HR hitter.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 27, 2009 2:03 AM EDT up reply actions

and Holliday has never hit more home runs than Luddy, in a season

even playing in colorado ;)

Holiday is, OTOH, probably the biggest boost we could make. But we need to acquire him WHILE keeping Ludwick and DJ, AND keeping enough dry powder to pick up DeRosa.

Don't call yourself strawman

be more confident.

The 2nd best hitter on the team got pinch hit for yesterday by another LH-hitting OF’er late in a close game. Either that, or LaRussa forgot to fill out the lineup card properly. So, snark all you want, but there is clearly a lack of confidence still there.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 27, 2009 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

i have a lack of confidence in him, too

and rightfully. he’s an unproven rookie who has shown signs of life and had deep slumps

but to state that swapping a righty OF for a different righty OF is somehow going to effect how tony handles his lefties is absurd. he’ll still make some retarded moves, but rasmus’ playing time isn’t going to decrease

by prophetjohn on Jun 27, 2009 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

It does effect Rasmus playing time

Do you honestly believe that LaRussa is going to put Mark McGwire-approved Matt Holliday into the ‘OF Rotation’ giving him a day off every 3 games?

Ludwick was coming off an amazing season, one of the 3 best in baseball offensively last year and he couldn’t even get the start in the 2nd game of the season.

Even if Ludwick was hitting like Colby Rasmus has been hitting this month, he’d get benched. Rasmus is the 2nd best hitter on the team and even he can’t get in a full 9 for 3 straight days.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 27, 2009 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions

that amazes me

more and more, that amazes me. Couldn’t get the start in game 2 of the season. w. t. f.

it’s like TLR totally missed all of last year.

And I’ll never forgive TLR for not letting Luddy stay in the last game to get the ONE more hit he needed to hit .300 last year. That’s frigging managerial incompetence, right there.

"second best hitter"

isn’t that prestigious an honor on the st louis cardinals, though

ankiel was also coming off what was a career year where he was on pace to hit more HRs than ludwick before his season was derailed by injury

remember everyone was sure that all of ludwick, ankiel and duncan were going to hit 40 HRs and we still needed to find playing time for rasmus until we traded ankiel for an ace type pitcher straight up?

things change. and tony la russa still makes retarded decisions. benching rasmus in favor of duncan against lefties the majority of the time hasn’t been in will continue to not be one of those decisions. or it at least won’t be affected by the acquisition of a right handed hitter

that's the right Q to ask

the only answer is {best offer that is > a first round draft pick and a supp, minus $7M, minus what the draft picks cost to sign}. With risk built in (IE, what if the yanks sign H plus 2 other FA’s like last year or, H gets hurt and loses type A, etc).

There’s no way to know what anyone else is bidding, but I know no sane player is willing to plop a trade chip who hit 37 HR last year.

by SleepyCA on Jun 27, 2009 3:16 AM EDT up reply actions

IF mo gives up Luddy

it has to be Luddy for H PLUS Oakland prospect, not the other way around. Mo is in the driving seat in this deal, he has to know that. beane made a bad deal for H, thinking he could either make a run for it this year (a reasonable risk, but didn’t happen) or trade him for + + + prospects. But + prospects are suddenly overvalued, not to mention + or ++, making guys like H undervalued on the trade market.

And that’s fine, because min value is always “draft pick plus supp, or 2 supps, etc”. Which is very valuable, to a GM whose fans think long-term. But Mo has to gauge the value and do what he can to get us to the post-season, this year AND next. And without Luddy, it gets harder and harder, going forward.

Such a package would probably include right fielder Ryan Ludwick and either reliever Jason Motte, Chris Perez or Kyle McClellan, plus a prospect.

the key word there is probably. for all we know, joe is talking out his pooper. MO himself has said he’s not trading a guy like Luddy, who’s just as good if not better than Holliday, and just as importantly under team control & a lot cheaper than Holliday. i know he said that because i saw it on a pregame earlier in the season. so hopefully joe is just speculating right now. at least i hope that’s what he’s doing. it’s what i’m telling myself so i can fall asleep soon.

And thinking that if Beane can deal Harden for Matt Murton, Eric Patterson, and Sean Gallagher then why wouldn’t he trade Holliday for Duncan and a collection of guys?

Then again, he probably was trying to get rid of Harden before his arm fell off and only really wanted Gallagher (although I had heard he really wanted both Murton and Patterson, so who knows?)

really, i don't see why duncan isn't just as attractive as ludwick to the A's

neither are hitting. and dunc has an excuse for a temporary loss of power. plus he’s cheaper

I'd rather keep Luddy.....

Maybe they’d do something like Holliday and Ellis for Duncan, Jones, Perez, and another prospect that isn’t Boggs/Wallace.

Than you could run Holliday, Raz, and Luddy out there most days, with Ankiel filling in. Hopefully resign Holliday and have the same OF next year, and if Ank is cheap enough, resign him. Balances out the right/lefty some, and allows Luddy to hit down in the order.

Remind me again why we'd want Mark Ellis?

I have a very, umm...photographic brain. A lot like Ansel Adams but in color and with a lot more, uh.....insertion and pubic hair.

My bad.....

Two things…..

- First, I was going to include Skip in the trade to Oakland. Maybe he’s the 4th/5th player, or maybe he goes instead of Duncan.

- Second, I really think we’d get something back from Oakland. Deals like this usually include some kind of throw-in concession on the side that is Oakland. They don’t need Ellis, I don’t think. But yea, it might be somebody else…..Ellis just sounded like a decent option.

I wouldn't trade for Mark Ellis if he was the last 2nd baseman on the planet.

Frankly, we don’t need him either. Even if Skip is involved in the deal. You start Tyler Greene at SS and Ryan at 2b.

Ellis is not any good, is 32 years old, is signed through 2011 (well, has a 500k buyout for 2011), and will make 5.5M in 2010 and 6M in 2011. Oh, and he’s currently on the 60-day disabled list.

No thank you.

Now I don't like this thought of trading Luddy for Holliday

but if we could somehow package Skip in there like Sooner said, and move Ryan to @B full time, I would like this idea a lot better.

Depends what he asks for.....

But he could still be useful, though I’d prefer it as the 4th OF.

Because maybe Boras will give us a discount for purchasing 2 of his clients?

"Rasmus doesn't hit lefties. Instead he bashes them over the head with their own bleeding arm he just raced to the mound to rip off before the ball arrives to the plate. He then smashes that baseball with the pitchers bloody arm over the wall because he does not hit lefites he bashes them." Ted Lilly

Why?

Why do you really think that Holliday won’t resign? Because of Boras? Holliday is from the midwest, so I’m sure he’d love to latch on around here. If I remember right, he grew up a bit of a Cardinals fan. And surely he sees what playing with AP would do to help his game. But if he leaves, we’ve got the picks.

Also not sure why you are so high on Jones. I like the kid, and I think he will be a decent pro. But he is still going to be a corner OF that doesn’t hit for as much power as a corner OF should, best case scenario in my mind. He’s another lefty. I don’t think he’ll be ready for a starting job before 2011.

I’d have a hard time moving Wallace for Holliday. I’d have had a hard time moving Raz last year, most likely, and definitely wouldn’t now. But we should be able to find guys like Jones pretty easily. I just don’t see him as the irreplaceable prospect that some do.

I should add.....

That I pretty much agree with you about not moving Jones as a throw-in, or as the 3rd best player in the deal. I wouldn’t hesitate to move him with a reliever and some lesser guys though.

If we trade Luds for Holliday I would not want to give up to much more than Luds.

I mean we are trading a player that will be comparable to Holliday who is cost controlled in exchange for one that is not.

I could live with that other player being Perez but then I want an A or AA player back.

I would also want a window to talk to Holliday about signing long term.

Finally I would want an army of Doctors to tear him apart and put him back togther again. I am tired of damaged goods.
