viva la Tom Mee
Thank you to Tom Mee, dead center is so much better. Weird how Cardinals broadcasts manage to get cameras in areas in other parks where no one else thinks it’s possible
Awesome
I love that this is changing, as I have always hated the off-center standard view. I honestly think it makes it harder to understand pitching and hitting.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "5.7 WAR" years.
am admittedly horrible at recognizing pitches
And that’s probably why.
Also, I’m trying to get more non-sporty friends into understanding baseball (they bring beer; they’re friends), and over and over I have to tell them “but it looks different live, the camera angles are terrible.” It’s not just pitching, it’s the editing too.
Like blackouts and playoff schedules, television is destroying baseball.

Precisely
I have never been very good at recognizing even basic pitches on TV. Sure, I can spot a big old Wainwright 12-6 curve ball, but I’m really bad at anything else.

it's even more sad
Because I always thought baseball was the communicator’s game. The broadcaster. The big headline. The hours of sitting there and describing the same game on the diamond as a thousand singular experiences.
Why can’t baseball as a whole communicate the simplest, most poetic part of the game? Instead it’s as incomprehensible as curling to a newbie.

I was thinking about this the other day
I really like the straight-on view b/c, as they mentioned, you get a better sense of the movement of the pitch. Plain and simple. You see the tail on a fastball. You see the sweeping action of a really good slider. You see that the 12-6 bender still moves a few inches side-to-side.
St. Louis Cardinals…Best fans and camera angles in baseball!!!
VivaElBirdos...Scoring less, but more frequently since approximately 1903.

I didn't realize
how much of a difference that the two different camera angles are, but of course, I never thought about it. I’m a big fan of dead center angles now!
Welcome to Baseball Heaven.
