Game 74 Open Thread -- June 25, 2009

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets, Jun 25, 2009 1:10 PM EDT

Carpenter Santana
2.77 FIP 3.61 FIP

Ordinarily, the matchup between Carp and Johan would look like a dream matchup on paper but New Yorkers are concerned about Santana right now. Santana was dominant in his first 7 starts of the season, w/ 60 K in 46 IP and a 0.78 ERA. Over his last 7 starts, Santana was struck out 37 in 43.1 IP and has a 5.82 ERA. He's given up 10 HR over the last 7 starts and he gave up just 2 in his first 7. On the plus side (if you're a Mets fan), his last start against the Rays was his best of this stretch. Mets' fans are understandably concerned about a drop in velocity though Dave Cameron over at fangraphs says they needn't be.

Carp was terrific the last time out, though he was pitching against the Royals' feeble offense. He hasn't quite been as good in June as he was in his first 5 starts but he's still been one of the best starters in the NL for the time that he's been on the mound. He's still about 5 starts away from being qualified for the ERA title but he'd lead the league if he was eligible. All I really want is for him to keep it up. I have a feeling we're going to need him to be good b/c we haven't exactly torn up lefties so far this season (.230/.313/.368). Yuck!

I was really hoping.....

We’d take 3 of 4 from the mets, and stay hot. Now we’re fighting for a split. Gotta think this is going to be a low scoring affair, so you might see some small ball early.

How does that site work? I pulled it up and clicked on the link and my browser would not display the page.

Based on this pitching matchup...

…and the quality of the two lineups, I’m predicting a total of 5 hits. Or, both guys will be knocked out by the 4th. There will be no middle ground.

What's the over/under on swings-and-misses

for Ankiel versus Santana? I’ll say six.

by santiagofish on Jun 25, 2009 1:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll take the over

How about groundouts to the right side? Over/under @ 2.5

by dmbnl on Jun 25, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Take every at bat and multiply it by 2.5

That will be the total number of swings and misses.

hypothetical...

could it be that the FO has instructed TLR to continue putting Ankiel out there to try and allow him to drive up trade value? I really am having difficulty coming up with any reasoning whatsoever for him to continually be played right now, unless they are trying to kickstart him for a trade or something.

just postulating, but it makes no sense, he would be there today, rather than Colby.

I don't get that either

Neither hit lefties at all, and Santana is the best lefty in the game. Now, Rasmus hasn’t had great success vs. lefties either, but he’s also a superior fielder compared to Ank and he hasn’t looked completely lost every second of every at bat.

Weird move.

You don't understand

why a woman would be bothered that girls are almost always the second choice of the father? Gee… It’s like her existence would be a consolation prize.

I’m glad I married a man, who after hearing my brother make these silly comments about having girls, told me he doesn’t care what genitals the baby has as long as it – and I – are healthy.

in all honesty,

i really didn’t care what sex the baby was (i was the one who pushed for not finding out). I just wanted a healthy baby too. I’d like to think that if I would have been graced with a baby girl instead, I’d be making reciprocal jokes about boys sucking, but we can only play with the cards that are dealt to us.

Carpenter is remarkable

The guy throws 3 ++ pitches. It’s not fair. Guy throws bowling ball curveballs and sinkers and has a frisbee cutter.

You know, thinking about it, he and Halladay are remarkably similar. Think the Jays wish Carp would have stayed healthy???

And Santana hasn’t been very sharp thus far.

Pitchers have realized that he’s only going to hit a grooved fastball or a hanging curveball. All you have to do against the guy is pitch off the plate and he’ll get himself out. I think he’s toast as a hitter until he starts recognizing “his” pitches.

Ank should NEVER

I repeat NEVER bat after Albert again. Seriously….

I get that Lud is struggling too, but he can at least run into one every now and again. Plus, if they walk Albert, more guys on base = greater likelihood of Lud seeing stuff in the zone (theoretically).

WIth Ank hitting 4th, you walk Albert every effin’ time and just throw junk. He’ll hit a lazy popout, groudout to 2B, or K.

So. Frustrating.

i wonder if they'll do what detroit did with commerica after one season,

and build some new shorter fences? they can’t do much with left, but i’m betting they could do something with the wall from center to right

I remember when he came from Colorado and his stats were WAY bloated because of it. Everyone was really on the fence about it. Then he goes and wins 20 games. That was a hell of a rotation.

Carp: 32

Soriano

just made the worst and laziest base running play I’ve ever seen in my life. It probably wasn’t the worst ever, but the amount of laziness and possible absent mindedness was astounding. Here’s the play.

Soriano on first with Lee up to bat with 1 out. Soriano runs on the pitch while Lee swings and hits the ball deep to left center field. The ball is deep but Ryan Rayburn catches it on the track and back steps a couple of steps softly into the fence.

Soriano sees all of this and (since he’s already rounded 2nd by a couple of steps) immediately heads back to 2nd (so he can re-tag before heading back to 1st, right? Well…). Soriano then stops at 2nd and just looks at Rayburn who then throws a hard rainbow from the wall to the cutoff man. Now at this point Soriano is jogging toward 1st and only until Matt Sinatro (the 1st base coach) is telling him to get down, does Soriano finally get up to about 3/4 speed before being doubled up on 1st.

I have a very, umm...photographic brain. A lot like Ansel Adams but in color and with a lot more, uh.....insertion and pubic hair.

by Tackle Box on Jun 25, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Something like that would make me go bat shit

Thurston does some stupid base running but at least he is running at full speed. He is getting busted for being over aggressive not laziness.

I guess. I want to say there was something else that bothered me, but I don’t remember what.

I would definitely take him pre-shoulder injury. Not sure we need ANOTHER 3B with major shoulder issues.
