Shouldn't we only be able to mention getting serious if we're at bat?
Seems like we may jinx it otherwise.
Can't complain much about the game tonight outside of the error in the 1st
The offense has done OK without Pujols and Piniero has pitched well.
yeah it'd kinda suck not to win this one really
i missed the first inning, and so the 6 i’ve seen we’ve totally dominated.

Al does realize...
that Adam Everett has a career OPS of .621 against the Cardinals, right? In other words, against the Cards he’d have been better off cleating himself on the way to the plate, or perhaps trying to hit with a pillow?
Oh, and great…a Cards pitcher and Barry Weinberg within 9 feet of each other.

While I respect your sample size arguement
it’s the middle of June… sooner or later we have to be able to make assumptions.
Yeah, but he didnt demonstrate a huge split
The difference in quality of pitchers as a whole is different, but i think its tough to say that (major league lefty – minor league lefty) is tons greater than (major league righty – minor league righty). If that makes sense. Which it probably doesn’t but I dont know how to articulate what I mean.

the ridiculous thing is
we just had a HUGE leverage situation, 2 men on, 2 outs, porcello out, a lefty reliever in… and he LEAVES SCHU TO BAT, to predictable results, a guy who CANNOT hit lefties in any way at all. So we just gave that situation away basically. And schu is a crap fielder, so we’d want him out late on anyhow….
And then one inning later he takes out our GOOD fielding CF, who’s had like 30 ABs in his career vs lefties in the majors? And leaves in duncan, AND schu, who are both terrible in the field and can’t hit lefties either? WTF?
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

Tony w/ an absolutely stone-stupid decision there
if he hates the lefty-lefty matchup why does skip get to bat w/ Ryan, a better defender as well, on the bench? not to mention it was a big spot in the game w/ a runner on 2nd.
then he takes out the 2nd best hitter on the team right now in favor of Albert who should be pinch hitting later in the game for Ankiel or Duncan. I’d much rather use the Rh hitter w/ the man on 2nd than to lead off the inn. he’s usage is not at all consistent. Not to mention we just got worse defensively.
we should have Ryan at 2b now, colby still in center and albert at first for duncan w/ ankiel in left or duncan in left depending on which one albert hit for. sigh
Impossible to justify his treatment of the 2 left-handed hitters there and his use of the bench. beyond dumb

I went ot bed shortly after motte started sucking. Was like 4am over here. Well, yep, rasmus has sucked this last month vs lhp. But so’s Duncan (and I wouldn’t have put Apu in for duncan – i think rasmus was arguably a better guy to replace. I’d have switched out Schumaker for Apu, or, at the very least, Greene or another RHB. Leaving him in when we had the tying run on 2nd and a LOOGY pitching was appalling).

what are you on about?
you are arguing that rasmus should not hit against lefties because he has, in like 50 PA, a lower OPS than duncan against lefties. That is not a significant sample size.
Honestly, I don’t think he should’ve pinch hit pujols for dunc, but rasmus is going to be a better hitter of LHP than duncan is. Crappy small sample sizes do not demonstrate otherwise.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
by Felonius_Monk on Jun 18, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions
FWIW, in 50 PAs
one marginal homerun is worth .020 OBP and .080 in SLG, making for a .100 diff in OPS. That’s why 50 PAs isn’t nearly enough
Mang Says...
"There is no "I" in team, or in B g Mac Land, either."

I took stats 101
I was saying that Colby’s shittyness against lefties over his last 50 PAs doesn’t demonstrate his true talent given his minor league stats where the split was far less severe
Mang Says...
"There is no "I" in team, or in B g Mac Land, either."
oh come on
stop arguing tedious semantics. The reality is that 50 PA, against 422 in the minors, doesn’t really tell us very much. Especially when he has a .112 BABIP
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
by Felonius_Monk on Jun 18, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Ok, but Colby's stats against LH pitching in single and double A
don’t tell me very much about whether he hits major league quality LOOGYs well. These guys are even better than avg. LH pitching against LHB – they’re paid to get out ML left handed hitting. Colby didn’t face those guys in the minors very often.
by Willie McGee's Twin on Jun 18, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
No that's true
but his results in 50 PA tell you even less.
All I’d say is this – his results against minor league lefties don’t say THAT much about his ability to hit them in the majors, BUT the fact he didn’t have a split did – unless you believe that the skill difference between LHP and RHP is different in the majors to the minors, Colby’s had a similar split against LHP as he has against RHP his whole career. So broadly, as he’s improved against righties and moved up the minor league ladder, he’s also hit lefties as well along the way.
That, at least, should be a pretty strong suggestion that his swing and eye are decent against LHP.
In contrast, Duncan and Schumaker both had pretty pronounced splits against LHP (I only looked it up last night but I believe both gave up over .080 in OBP against LHP in the minors), which suggests (at the only level we can really compare the players, i.e. where they’ve had enough PAs) they have less ability to hit LHP than rasmus.
I really can’t understand how you can argue a 50 PA sample size between three players at one level as opposed to 400+ PA sample size at lower levels that show a different result. I’ve got to think the larger sample is more representative, right?
Also re: minor league pitching – I agree about the LOOGY thing, but the effect is JUST the same on schu or duncan, or whichever lefty you have hitting – I’m not arguing “Colby will hit lefties as well as righties” or “Colby will hit lefties as well in the majors as he did in the minors”; I’m saying that Colby’s major league split against LHP is likely (given a reasonable sample size) to be better than Duncan, Ankiel or Schu’s, because that was the trend that was reflected in the minors, and I don’t really see how 50 PA with a .118 BABIP spread over 2 and a half months really does much to disprove that.
Also, I’m not sure the skill difference in LHRP between the high minors and the majors is different to any other position, really. In Memphis we have a good lefty starter (Garcia, when he’s healthy) and at least three decent AAA LOOGYs (Manning, Ostlund, Ring, you could include Maekawa too) who are all borderline guys who could be in the majors at some point. I don’t see how the gulf between MLB and AAA is bigger in LHRP than it is in starting pitching, hitting, right-handed relief etc etc.
So, I take your point, but I just don’t think saying “it’s different in the majors than the minors” and assuming Colby can’t hit major league LOOGYs given a tiny sample size is really arguing your case particularly persuasively
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
by Felonius_Monk on Jun 19, 2009 5:50 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree and wasn't arguing that...
Colby won’t be able to hit LHP in the majors as a general matter based on his few ML PA’s against LHP. My argument was that having Apu hit for Raz at that point in the game was not a stupid decision given all the factors (matchups, chances for Apu to hit twice in a one-run game, the situation at the end of the 6th versus the start of the 7th, etc.).
by Willie McGee's Twin on Jun 19, 2009 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions
no, it probably wasn't
compared to the option of having him in for duncan, i tend to agree that was probably the right choice. But if pujols was going to play at all, he shoulda been in for Schu, in the higher-leverage situation, with a man on and a chance to tie it up or give us the lead. IMO anyway. You make some valid points though.

see my note below...
Pujols would’ve been walked with two outs and a man on second with Raz facing a LOOGY wiht 2 outs. What’s the run expectancy of that versus starting off an inning with Pujols and no outs? regardless, TLR definitely should have hit Pujols for Raz rather than wait for Dunc given the increased chances that Pujols would hit twice.
by Willie McGee's Twin on Jun 18, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah but
if he hits him for schu then he gets on (say he’s walked every time), putting two runners on in a position where we have a guy in scoring position, and makes our defense better.
I’m not arguing about the dunc/ras thing – you’re right there, except that ras is better at hitting lefties than duncan, but i agree that having pujols hit twice takes precedence. But pujols should’ve been in for schu.
And we need to stop treating rasmus as if he can’t hit lefties when he’s never been given the chance. Like i say, he’s the only cardinal lefty who didn’t have a platoon split in the minors – he hits lefties just fine.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

He's had a chance.....
Only Duncan has more AB’s against lefties, as a lefty, than Raz on the Cardinal roster. A lefty hitting heavy roster.

50 PA, spread over 2 months, is not enough to make a conclusion about anything
I just don’t see how you can argue that. At all. It’s facile. Albert’s had 50 PA stretches in his first two seasons when he’s OPSed less than .800. Did we just say “OK, he’s done” and send him back to the minors, or bench him? No. Ludwick’s had some terrible 50PA runs against all sorts of pitching this year, but it doesn’t mean he’s suddenly a terrible hitter or can’t hit major league pitching.
I understand what you mean – i.e. that TLR hasn’t particularly held rasmus out against LHP. Fair enough, I think we can see that. But I do believe that making the conclusion that he has a significant split on just 50 PA is foolhardy; wait until he’s had at least a few hundred more ABs. On that basis, I’d probably rather switch out guys who a) are known to have bad platoon splits and b) are bad defenders, such as Schumaker and (to a lesser extent) Duncan. I actually personally think that Duncan’s approach to LHP looks better this year, and his good batting eye is going to make him a better option going forward against lefties than Schu and Ank, who both look fairly clueless against southpaws.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
by Felonius_Monk on Jun 19, 2009 6:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Not that it justifies it...
but assuming Albert stays in, he pinch hit there so that he’ll come up again in the bottom of the 9th. Which he now is guaranteed to do…
V, b.
Well...
by Tony’s logic, Albert just walks and Colby faces the lefty, which he clearly didn’t want. I’m not agreeing with him, I’m just saying there was a reason for it…
V, b.
I think
TLR was trying to force Leyland to lift Seay by PH Albert, then have a RHP to face Dunc and Ank later

How much do I dislike Thursty today...
Yadi swings and hits a high fly ball... Endy Chavez goes back, to the track, to the wall... ITS A GUNNER!! Yadi gives St. Louis the lead in the top of the ninth!
pujols hits for schu
and drives in the run (hopefully). Then we take ouot dunc for either ryan or greene, move thurston to 2B, greene to 3B, Albert to 1B and we not only get albert in in the high leverage situation, AND give him at least 2AB, BUT we get better defensively too…. absolute no-brainer.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
They very well may have walked him
But if so that is ok, they are putting the go ahead run on
by Merry CRasmus on Jun 18, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions
they would have walked Pujols and had a LOOGY facing Rasmus with two outs
what’s the difference in run expectancy with that versus starting an inning off with PUjols and no outs?
by Willie McGee's Twin on Jun 18, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
thats a fair point
but then we have a better defensive alignment, and we can switch rasmus out THEN if we really want. Rasmus isn’t going to be bad vs LHP – like I say he has no platoon split in the minors. You guys really need to pay less attention to crazy small sample sizes.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

Win expectancy
There’s about a 3.5% greater chance of winning with 1st and 2nd in the 6th vs. leading off the 7th.
by Merry CRasmus on Jun 18, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions
does that factor in Raz versus a Loogy and Pujols starting off the inning (with his high OBP)?
by Willie McGee's Twin on Jun 18, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Nope
Fair point. You’re also assuming they will intentionally walk him. That is not a sure thing because it puts the winning run on. Very well could have happened though. And while we are counting other variables you have to consider how much each move affects our defensive abilities.
You are making the right, and best, points here. I still do not think it’s the right move.
by Merry CRasmus on Jun 18, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
agreed
it might not be as clear cut as i thought and I do appreciate that, willie, but I still think it’s far better to have one more inning of our best defensive alignment, pujols hitting with a man on EVEN IF he’s IBBed (because he likely gets UIBBed when leading off anyhow), I don’t really think having colby facing a LOOGY is especially relevant as we have Dunc and Ank facing the LOOGY in the next inning (presumably with Pujols on) anyhow. And, as I’ve mentioned several times, Rasmus is likely a better hitter of LHP than Dunc and Ank, he just hasn’t had chance to demonstrate it yet in 50 plate appearances where he’s had a .118 BABIP.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

I would have been fine with Pujols batting for Schu - my comments were really...
geared towards all the people who immediately jumped in and said TLR was stupid for subbing Pujols for Raz when, at that point, it was the smart play so that Pujols could bat twice.
Somebody can probably run the stats to see how often the Cards score when Pujols leads off an inning – I’m betting it’s pretty high. Also, you’ve got to give Pujols two chances to hit the solo shot when (at the time) it was a one-run game.
by Willie McGee's Twin on Jun 18, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't want to be the guy
That goes on rants for every in game decision. Such is the danger of being on these in game threads.
I don’t think it’s the right move, but you make good points. I kinda liked the idea of him facing Seay right when they made the pitching change. But it is probably naive to think he was going to get much to swing at so it’s probably a lot closer call than it appears. 3.5% for one situation is a pretty damn big gap to close for one at bat though. If Rasmus is as bad as his splits show that probably closes it. I don’t think he is but only time will tell.
Anyway, let’s rally here!
by Merry CRasmus on Jun 18, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions
i don't see how having pujols start off an inning can be any better than him being on 1st base by an IBB
it just can’t, when there’s already a guy on 2B.
Even if Raz faces the LOOGY in the first scenario, when you have pujols leading off the inning, you’re letting dunc and ankiel face the loogy in the next inning. Either way someone’s gonna face him.

It kind of sounds like he’s [Duncan] just running around like a puppy out there – full speed ahead in random directions. – BTown Birds Fan
why does Dunc always drop to one knee when he swings?

in retrospect
i take that back. probably would’ve busted his kneecap, that pitch was coming in hard.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
this would have been a nice time to have a big time power bat on the bench.
Shame there wasn’t one available tonight.

and thursty really blew it for pineiro
Yadi swings and hits a high fly ball... Endy Chavez goes back, to the track, to the wall... ITS A GUNNER!! Yadi gives St. Louis the lead in the top of the ninth!

I hate all the politics involved with this team
I love Dave Duncan, and think he is the best pitching coach in the league. But i’m ready for him and TLR to move on, so we can finally rid this team of Chris and Rick
MyBrute - Where tiny gladiators rule the internets
I don't get all the Chris Duncan hate...
Is he good? No. But there’s a whole lot of bad to go around.
And I’m really getting sick of “Oh, he’s the coach’s son” snide comments
Especially after he had a decent game – 1 hit in 3 AB, 2 walks.
You're right
I should love that .757 OPS and terrible defense. Especially out of our cleanup hitter.

Keys to the Game
-Joe Thurston was Joe Thurston.
-Manager replaced 2nd best hitter with 1st best hitter for no reason in 7th inning.
-Rick Ankiel was Rick Ankiel.
That’s it folks, drive safe.

and joel outpitched porcello
and got the loss because his defense failed him.

I don't know about that
as much as Pineiro was hurt by his defense, so was Porcello. He only gave up 1 XBH all game and that was to the last batter he faced.

Thursty had a couple of tough tries......
Tony tried to get Leland to pull his lefty, it didn’t work……..
Hitting Rick against a guy throwing 40% change ups just shows weak our bench is……. HC
good point.
I’m pretty impressed with luddy’s performance tonight; usually, change-up pitchers own him.

yup, that's a nice quick summary alright
but overall, i’m pleased we took 2 of 3 from detroit after how we had been playing lately. hopefully we can do the same vs kc.
First Thursday loss of the season if I am not mistaken
Well that’s it. I can’t take it any more. If this team can’t be counted on to win ever single frickin’ Thursday, what’s the point? Mo should just sell off AP (who is ridiculous, by the way), AW, and whoever else anyone will take for Derek Jeter, Jose Reyes, Gary Sheffield, Pedro Martinez, Matt Holiday, Miguel Tejada, and Jake Peavy. At least that way we would have the most exciting team and have some sense of cosistency.
/sarcasm-was this tag necessary?
