Let's start with some good news shall we...

TLR will be an All-Star coach this year, per Yahoo! Sports. Charlie Manuel picked TLR and Torre as his two coaches. So hopefully we’ll have 2 starters, a few pitchers, and Tony!

of people don’t care about the ASG b/c it’s not “real,” but I was furious at TLR when Rowand wasn’t called back…. maybe more furious than I have been at anything else he’s ever done.

Honestly, I would say it has to do

with Barry and Mark O’Neal having experience working in St. Louis. It wouldn’t make sense to have the Dodgers or Marlins head trainers come all the way to STL and not know the landscape of the medical community in town only to have a player get severely injured. This seems more of a logistics choice than a performance choice…

Well let's take a look...

here are the locations and hometown host coach picks (if applicable) picked within the past 10 years.
2008 – New York, Yankee Stadium, Joe Torre was picked as a coach by Terry Francona
2007 – San Francisco, AT&T Park, Bruce Bochy was picked by TLR
2006 – Pittsburgh, PNC Park, Jim Tracy was picked by Phil Garner
2005 – Detroit, Comerica Park, Alan Trammel was picked by Terry Francona
2004 – Houston, Minute Maid Park, Jimy Williams was picked by Jack McKeon
2003 – Chicago, US Cellular Field, Jerry Manuel was picked by Mike Scioscia
2002 – Milwaukee, Miller Park, No hometown host manager pick
2001 – Seattle, Safeco Field, Lou Pinella was picked by Joe Torre
2000 – Atlanta, Turner Field, Bobby Cox was the manager
1999 – Boston, Fenway Park, Jimy Williams was picked by Joe Torre

So long story short, yes, it is normal for the hometown manager to be picked…unless your from Wisonsin. =)

is there a reason that the last two games have been blacked out on fsn? this is really aggravating not being able to watch baseball now after everything so far has been fine. i live in champaign if that helps matters at all.

Interesting to SEE the Cards now that I am back in Japan with access to AFN media.

Overall the team looks sluggish – despite yesterday’s slugfest. Sort of reconfirms the impression that I’ve had listening this year. Is sluggish an accurate perception?

So unless there is a much better of a chance of Thursty getting on base through a bunt (which I doubt), he might as well just swing the bat and hope to get an XBH.

D'oh

Micah Owings just hit a 3-run HR to put the Reds on top of ATL 4-2. I think when judging Micah Owings as a valuable pitcher on your team, you have to include his hitting ability. Like take his OPS given up, and subtract (his batting OPS * 1/9). That will give a more accurate count of what he does.

Until Luddy gets it going

Rasmus should be hitting 4th.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

Ok....

Didn’t notice the Pinch hitter. That makes a little bit more sense. Tony Does have two LOOGYs for a reason.

I'm just angry he'd let Motte bat for himself, then not let him throw a pitch in the next inning

Im sure he planned on it.

Until the put in the lefthander.

I know

But sometimes I just think he outthinks himself

Yeah.

Even if this ends well. It was still the wrong choice not to PH for Motte.

by Evilfrog on Jun 17, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually

I liked the idea of Motte hitting for himself, to see how far Tony could stretch him in the 7th. Then Leyland threw up the lefty and Tony’s matchup reflex kicked in.

by nota bene on Jun 17, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagreed with both decisions

First, why not hit for Motte? Second, if you’re going to bat a relief pitcher so he can pitch the next inning, then you shouldn’t care whether it’s a lefty or righty coming up.

PHing for Motte = totally understandable

I just like Motte (I think it’s cause he looks stoned as hell in his GD pic….that and he throws 97-99) coming back out after throwing 7 pitches, might as well stretch him since you have to go 3.2 with the bullpen tonight.

But, yeah, when you let him bat for himself it’s silly to take him out without facing another batter, even if he is a lefty.

by nota bene on Jun 17, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, I'm ok with Motte hitting there.

Thurston’ s “bunt” effed it all up.

by goodymobb on Jun 17, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

typical Tony MO….something bizarre (pulling Motte after he batted for himself) but at least there was a discernible reason (lefty PH). I’da left him in there all the same, but at least it’s something that can be understood….

by nota bene on Jun 17, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Me too.

I mean, bases empty. Motte was hitting 98. Why not let him pitch?

by Evilfrog on Jun 17, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe cause it's old buddy Leyland across the way

Been kinda avoiding the gd thread tonight

but man, what a dumb series of events….
1. Leadoff runner on 2nd, 0 outs. We don’t score. In fact, we lose 3 outs basically without taking a swing.
2. A reliever (who looked pretty good) hit for himself
3. then Tony pulls said reliever.

Glad things are back to normal!

When the replay showed Colby was actually safe, he quickly made mention and went back to a stroy about a hitting coach no one gives a crap about.
