No margin for error w/ Verlander on the mound

Hopefully Adam can somehow keep this inning scoreless.

Colby kind of approached a ball not sure whether or not to dive

I think he tried to pull up a bit and slipped. Ball scooted to the wall.

They are hitting .190 with runners in scoring position in May and June….

Nick Stavinoha? Chris Duncan, who hit far worse last year and, in his big comeback year, is basically doing the same thing Ankiel is year-to-date? Shane Robinson?

by DanUpBaby on Jun 16, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

he looks bad

but his numbers look just like the other non-Rasmus outfielders. Defensively he’s a clear upgrade over Duncan, which leaves Ankiel… as one of the three regular starting ofs.

by DanUpBaby on Jun 16, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i mean i agree to a point

though rasmus has clearly gotten better as the season has gone on (as he’s always done), ludwick is getting back from injury and i expect him to improve. as for duncan, for me that extra 20-25 points of OBP is worth more than giving up the same amount in SLG. obviously, the defense, you’re right about. i just have a lot more confidence based on the circumstances and what i can see that the other 3 will outperform ankiel going forward.

shit

and Skip goes up hacking too….

WTF? He sees 2 pitches, Ryan sees 2, so we’re at 4 pitches, 2 outs.

Will Colby try to lay down a bunt here on a pitch out of the zone?

so they only saw 3 pitches between them. and Colby saw two. not very patience.

one would think Rasmus was hitting like Musial and Ankiel like Mendoza…

Currently, Rasmus has a 260/320/450 line. Ank is at 245/315/430. Ank is decent in the outfield, Rasmus is better. Ank gets picked off second, Rasmus lollygags it half the time.

by mojowo11 on Jun 16, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

well, in general

man on second, no out, the run expectancy is 1.189. Man on third, one out, 0.983. So every time that TLR calls for that play and succeeds, he costs the team 1/5 of a run. And of course, the sacrifice doesn’t always work.

It also gives the pitcher a free out on 1-2 pitches.

But what is the

expectancy with man on 2nd, 1 out? That’s the situation you would be left with if the runner isn’t advanced.

by RiverRat on Jun 16, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

but that is built in to the run expectancy with man on 2 no out.

you don’t have to markov chain every possible outcome, it’s all rolled up for you already.

Unless you are asking “how much does it cost, on average, if the sac fails”, in which case the answer is 1.283-0.725 = .5 runs.

Still seems better

Than watching the batter K, hit a fly ball, ground to the left side, etc. It’s a productive out.

by BCinVA on Jun 16, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

it's a lost opportunity

It makes you slightly more likely to score one run and decreases the odds of scoring more than one run. Overall, it’s a bad bet.

by SleepyCA on Jun 16, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

right.

but the run expectancy is lower with a man on 3rd and 1 out than it is with a man on 2nd and no outs. most of the time, the team’s going to score more in the second scenario than in the first.

if you sac bunt, you’re not allowing for the fact that the batter might have done something more productive.
