Getting worried...
Back in January, I posted some thoughts about the future of the franchise, specifically Albert Pujols' future with our beloved Cardinals.
http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/2009/1/20/729175/something-to-thin-about
Today on Deadspin, fellow fan Will Leitch has picked up the ball and shares my concern (and articulates it much better than I did)
http://deadspin.com/5291272/how-the-cardinals-could-lose-albert-pujols?skyline=true&s=x
So, what to do? Stay patient and hope the offense turns it around? Will management go out and make a move to try and help convince Albert that they're still willing to pay to improve the team and are committed to winning?
This is by no means a knee-jerk reaction to the play of late... this was a concern months ago and it continues to grow. I just hope ownership and the front office realize it before it's too late.

i stopped reading that right after he called Bernie great
i’m sorry, i love will as much as anyone, but bernie is far from great. he’s not even the best writer on the PD staff.
It kind of sounds like he’s [Duncan] just running around like a puppy out there – full speed ahead in random directions. – BTown Birds Fan

Albert could leave, but I'd doubt it
He loves the city and the team too much to go. I don’t think he wants to leave. He’s said too many good things about the team and organization to not re-sign with the team. Albert has repeatedly said that he wants to retire as a Cardinal, and I think the organization will do whatever they can to keep him. Let’s hope that it includes trading for some talent this season!

I wouldn't give him an extension
until I knew all the names on that 2003 list. Who knows how far down that would drive his price if he was on the list.

2003 was a long time ago
And Fat Albert has done a heckuva lot of hittin since then. Personally, I don’t think whether or not he’s on a list from six years ago really means much at this point. Regardless of if he did or didn’t use anything back then, he’s clean now and has been for several years and there hasn’t been any dip in production.
Unless folks would be worried about potential health issues of a former user coming up later in a career, I don’t think it would have much impact on his market value.

i think that was sarcasm.

It may have been sarcasm...
but I think it’s somewhat legit. You don’t think the ARod saga from a couple of years ago would have played out different if his name had come out sooner? He has put up good numbers consistently for the past six seasons as well, but I bet it would have cost him $2-5M a year if it had come out before he re-signed.

Exactly
if the ARod story had come out a year earlier, he wouldn’t have gotten the contract he did. He still would have been paid a substantial amount and still would have performed the way he has but it most certainly would have hurt his dollar value.

I say do what you can to keep Albert until AJ Pujols is ready to replace him.

There's a plan.
Although I don’t think AJ will be picked in the 13th round like his father was.

Money and Good Team
It is going to cost a lot of money and the Cards will have no choice but to pay the price. Pujols is an elite player in the game and his reputation has grown and grown. He seems to be a very humble person who is team oriented but he is a smart guy who has to understand that his success is somewhat dependent upon who hits around him.
He needs protection and they are OK in front of him with a young developing Rasmus but there is a huge hole behind him and I think that will go a long way in determining his future status with the Cards.

Pujols wants to win
That’s the bottom line. He also likes Missouri and wants to be paid at or near what he’s worth. My prediction is that he takes a bit below what he could command on the open market and structures the contract so that St. Louis stays competitive for the next several years. My personnel bet – five year contract, two option years. $22M per season on average. No trade clause.

much more...
I don’t foresee any scenario unfolding in which Albert will be willing to take a dime less than what Teixeira got this year…8 yrs, $180 million… I think Albert is obviously worth every penny and more, I’m just concerned that the team won’t/can’t pay up
