I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, I appreciate Ryan and T. Greene getting the opportunity to man SS with their better defense. But, by the same token, if Khalil fails at 3rd, what does this do for his anxiety issues? I understand the business side - the Front Office wants a return on their $6.5 mil investment. But the humanitarian side of things... it seems awfully risky. You could completely wreck what's left of his career. As much as it seems like no trade for help if this semi-works... I kind of hope it works for Khalil's sake.

Khalil G. issue

Much has been speculated regarding Khalil Greene regarding his psychological disability. From what I have read, the diagnosis seems to gravitate toward “anxiety disorder,” though his alleged behaviors (self-punishment, physical pain infliction, etc) indicate more than a basic issue with anxiety.

On the positive side, Khalil’s issue may be dramatically improved with a balanced medication routine. To coincide with his time on the DL, most medications prescribed for psychological disorders take about 2 weeks to be completely effective. No one within the organization is talking specifics about this issue and Khalil is not offering any interviews, but to assume the best: This is a disorder that can be treated with medication, and possibly on-going counseling.

Looking at defensive ratings and comparing Khalil’s raw ability to play SS at the MLB level, it looks as though the Cardinals have found better defensive options (i.e. B. Ryan) for the moment. Since the team has a dire need at 3B, and since Khalil has a history of playing 3B, it does make baseball sense to try this out. It makes better sense than, say, having a 4th outfielder play 2B with zero experience.

At this point, what better options are there? Moving Khalil to 3B indicates, I think, a quiet desperation within the organization to make what pieces are available fit the ever-growing needs of the club. If it works, hoorah, and maybe one issue is resolved for the time being. If having Khalil at 3B does not work out, then the list of “needs” for the Cardinals remains the same.

Honi soit qui mal y pense.
