Game 64 Overflow Thread

It'd be nice to see the Cardinals at least aspire to make this game dramatic.

Honestly, if I'm DeWitt or Mozeliak, this club doesn't look like a contender to me.  There's no way I blow prospects or additional money on a Mark DeRosa or a Adrian Beltre.  They aren't the difference between the playoffs and watching TV in October.  This offense needs to shape up in a hurry.

Alright Cards, let's hold em and then get some hits.

good for you

that first stuff is so bcb. If you’re gonna do that you might as well throw back homerun balls and toss garbage on the field.

actually, it's more slashdot, 1998, than BCB, 2009

but it was lame, even then. I can’t believe anyone on the internet is still doing that.

Excellent idea, taking his word for it.

Trust me, if you happened to be one of the few thousand people back in the day who would download various bits of files off the old usenet system, you would totally remember the culture that produced people being excited to say, “first” any time a new anything popped up. Hell, back in those days, whichever one of us posted, “first!” may literally have been the actual first to do something.

I admit it; I sort of miss all the alt.net boards. The amount of hours I spent in my life scanning through text-based file directories, looking for the one chunk of a screen capture that I didn’t yet have… Ah, memories.

You can't teach a hammer to love nails.

Umps really need to be held accountable for missing balls and strikes

Bang bang plays I can see. But the guy sees 200+ pitches a game. And some these called strikes aren’t just a bit outside.

by Evilfrog on Jun 14, 2009 9:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

seriously

They have the technology.

And as I said a second ago, it is just plain dumb that MLB has this defined strike zone, yet the guys who call the came can tinker with the explicitly-defined rules as they see fit, even during the course of the same game.

by goodymobb on Jun 14, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're using pitch f/x for that now

Since it’s in all the stadiums already and works better than questec, I guess.

by liam on Jun 14, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So

when I look at T. Greene’s at-bat on gameday, the strike zone rectangle just doesn’t show up, and there are no paths for the pitches, just green and red circles floating there. Anybody else getting this?

There's no "I" in team. There's also no "I" in "B-g Mac Land".

This offense looks terrible for about a month now

You’ve got holes at 3rd and 2nd and the corner outfielders aren’t hitting. SS and CF have been great defensively but offensively they aren’t going to carry the team. Molina is having a down year. I just don’t see how this team is a player or two away from being good.

I don’t trust the back end of the rotation and the bullpen is bipolar.

This looks like an 80-82 win team to me.

Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation

by azruavatar on Jun 14, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

Yes, the offense has looked terrible for about a month, but keep in mind that most of that month Ankiel and Ludwick were hurt. They have both shown signs of recovery, but we’ve been hasty to write them off because we were so desperate for them to be themselves the day they came back from injury.

If we fill our hole at third, we can be back to an offense similar of last year. Ryan is hitting and doing exactly what we need him to do. Rasmus is showing more and more signs of being a hitter that can make a big contribution to this team.

Our bullpen has been solid when we’re winning games. If we can get an offense that can put up for than 0 runs per game, our bullpen is about as trustworthy as you can get.

If this team can add a 3B or hitting SS and a middle-rotation pitcher (even like the Weaver trade of so many years back), there is no reason to say we’re worse than the rest of the NL central.

I think it’s easy to see our own holes and forget that every team has holes. When we can get some of these rental players for pretty cheap deals, we should be doing it now. The problem is that when they will probably wait to trade – at the deadline – might be too late.

On with the (good) youth movement!

by aet15 on Jun 14, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

With Ankiel though

he’s not going to suddenly start taking pitches and only hitting good pitches. The book is out on him now and unless teams throw him hittable pitches, it’s unlikely he’ll ever match his earlier success again.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 15, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is true

The book is out, for sure. But I do think we can begin to expect Luddy to return to decent form. And if Ankiel starts to put up fluke numbers even though the anxious plate approach, he could be an excellent trade candidate for a mid-rotation pitcher.

On with the (good) youth movement!

So you're advocating change for the sake of change

which is fine….just trying to be clear.

Anecdotally at least, it seems like you sometimes see a nice little run after one of these little “shake ups.” I think if you fire McRae, you’re basically saying “Look guys, our offensive approach sucks, someone has to be held accountable and that’s why we fired Hal. Now pick it up fellas.”

McRae can get fired for the team he works for not doing the thing that he is supposed to be telling them how to do.

by goodymobb on Jun 14, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The career stats of coaches are extremely overrated.

Dave Duncan didn’t even pitch, Billy Beane did nothing in his playing career that made him look like he’d make a good GM. Thinking outside the box would be getting a technocrat who can break down pitch f/x data and mechanics and game theory.

I still don't know what the hitting coach "does"

that makes his impact so crucial.

Of course, the Cubs (and I guess the Reds) recently fired their hitting coaches, maybe for good reason, maybe just to shake things up.

Still, I mean, if you think what the coach, who may or may not really do much, is telling you is dumb, well, just don’t do it.

“Be aggressive….don’t be afraid to hack against this guy.”

“Eh, I think I’m gonna look at a strike anyway, seems like this dude has been kinda wild. Maybe I’ll coax a walk or something…leave me alone Hal, thanks.”

see

I think the consensus is that the hitting coach maybe helps with a little film work or something, but that his impact is very minimal, which is kinda interesting, given how much credit a pitching coach (e.g., Duncan) gets in comparison.

Thing is, pitchers who are established mediocre pitchers come under DD and lower their HR/9 and get better results.

It would be difficult to apply a similar analysis to hitting coaches, but I think it would be possible.

yeah

it’s tough b/c the baseline for hitters is so low (i.e., “even the best hitters fail 7 out of 10 times”), plus there’s also the different philosophical approaches (e.g., walks are not good, the first pitch you see will probably be the best pitch you see, whatever).

Seems like there too many confounds to be able to isolate the contribution of the hitting coach.

Ankiel – 1st pitch called strike (FB – 4 seam) – Swinging strikeout – 3 pitches

4th inning:

Ludwick – 1st pitch strike (CHG) – GO 6 – 1 pitch – 0 B 0 S

8th inning:

9th inning:
Ryan – 1st pitch swinging strike (CHG) – Single – 3 pitches 0 B 2 S
Ankiel – 1st pitch swinging strike (FB – 4 seam) – FO 8 – 2 pitches – 0 B 1 S
Pujols – 1st pitch called strike (CHG) – PO 3 – 4 pitches – 0 B 0 S
Ludwick – 1st pitch swing (CHG) – FO 7 – 1 pitch – 0 B 0 S
Stavinoha – 1st pitch swing (CHG) – FO9 – 1 pitch – 0 B 0 S

Lee threw 25 first pitch strikes (of 32 batters faced) and 12 of those were called strikes (13 were swung at) and only a few of them were something other than a 4 seam fastball.

Lee also started 19 batters with fastballs (2 2-seamers and 17 4-seamers). Basically he was pumping first pitch fastballs all day long until the last inning when he switched to the Changeup (probably because he felt he was losing velocity). If you gonna see 19 first pitch fastballs and you can’t hit it, then you’re in for a long (well, short) day.

I know there’s more that can be found but it’s late and I’m tired of looking at gameday but in what I saw, I wouldn’t be surprised if 80% of the pitches he threw were 4-seam fastballs. Once again, if Cliff Lee is throwing nothing but 4-seamers, you better be swinging and you better be hitting them.

I have a very, umm...photographic brain. A lot like Ansel Adams but in color and with a lot more, uh.....insertion and pubic hair.

i knew this would happen. i’m just glad i didn’t have to live through it.

and i totally agree A, holy hell the O sucks. Beltre & DeRo are not the answers. playing out the season & blowing this mother up come winter is looking like a much better option.

fuck.

Yup...

As long as the Cardinals are in probably the worst division on baseball, they’ll always be potential contenders.

Often, throughout the game

I’ll think to myself: “We are the St. Louis Cardinals, the most storied franchise in the National League. We have the best player on the planet. And we have Player X playing Position Z. What other team in the National League would actually start this guy at Position Z?”

Most generally, Player X is Nick Stavinoha.

Goin to STL from Indiana on Wednesday...

…and going to the game.

What should I do prior to the game itself? Headed down there early in the day.

Who is starting?

If it isn’t Wainwright or Carpenter, I suggest drinking heavily.

If Khalil Greene is activated and starting at 3B, I suggest sniffing glue.

Kinda why I'm hoping for a rainout Tuesday...

…‘cause then I get to see the Wagonmaker…
…otherwise it’s Wellemeyer. Shall I bring a flask? haha

Al Hrabosky's and eat the beef brisket at the cart before the entrance.

Hot beer tub girls there.
Shannon rules: Beer an inning.
Post game = Patty O’s.
Dubliner = good 3am bar.
End the night at the east side, stumble out of Hollywood or Pops at 5am. Then again that’s just what I do.

lots.

something like 8.50. I drank bud lite lime (perfect summer drink) at the full bar at 6.50ish? per 12oz can. Stadium bars are the same price as the stadium, like +7 for beer. East side is actually cheaper (but don’t blow all your money at the game ;-). I break off around 150-200 a game (and afterwards activities…then again I quit rehab cause it was kililng my night life. I missed you were going there mid week, everything but Patty Os will be dead after the game, the east side will still be open but dead, Pops will be pretty empty but serve 24/7.

So come with a fat wallet. Gotcha.

Lookin’ forward to getting to my first Redbirds game… Only other MLB game I went to was 2 years ago…White Sox/Blue Jays (Buerhle v. Halladay).

My god – that sounds like an abomination…

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

My suggestion for things to do before the game...

1. Drink Heavily
2. Um….Drink More
