their offense is just the same as it was in 2008 when they won 97 games

except they’ve added bradley, who isn’t working out but who IS a quality hitter, and lost DeRo. They got lucky in 08 but I don’t buy that they suddenly suck. They’ve lost 2 more games than us (I think, and 1 more in about 45 mins), and everyone was saying they were the best team in the NL in the spring.

this is a VERY winnable division this year, and I think we’re one, maybe two players away from being in it, and they don’t even have to be expensive stars. In the last two years, you’ve always felt it was going to be an uphill struggle and even a big signing wouldn’t necessarily get us over the line. THIS year, in albert’s prime, we HAVE to do something to keep in contention, esp against lefties. GET SOME RH HITTERS.

Just a return to awfulness. Pinata was OK, but the rest - Albert aside - were dreadful. Again. .

Team’s been losing to losing teams, too. This stretch of games – Reads, Rox, Fish, Indians should have fattened up the Cards. Instead it’s downgraded the record and fortells more of the same – only worse – when the good teams roll around. . .

Not sure what the answers is, but it surely does not involve Hawksworth, PJ, and a pen that tosses meatballs or walks. . .

This game could have been oh so very much worse

Ankiel misplayed his way into some death-defying catches that saved Pinata’s bacon countless times.

I’m glad I’m DVR’ing tomorrows game and going to a wedding. I can just hit delete when I get hope after Brad Thompson exits in the 3rd, confused about why he keeps being put in these situations.

Anyone know why Ankiel didn’t try to gun down the first runner that scored tonight? He had the ball as the guy was rounding 3rd and then just quit. If he was Colby Rasmus, Al would have had 2 cats and 9 kittens over it.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 13, 2009 1:34 AM EDT reply actions

i was watching this at work

but exactly when did ankiel misplay his way into death-defying catches?

the one to the wall in straight away center?

by prophetjohn on Jun 13, 2009 2:20 AM EDT up reply actions

and if he misplayed his way into these catches

how did that save Piniero? Wouldn’t that imply that a better CF would have easily made the play, further implying that Ankiel increased piniero’s risk, rather than saving anything?

Also, i thought that at least one of the RBI doubles in the gap should have been caught.

I actually watched last night.

I haven’t been paying that much attention. I was struck by Rick Horton’s comments-he was shocked, shocked, that Eric Wedge left Rafael Perez, a lefty, to pitch to a right handed batter. He implied that Wedge was really a stupid man, and obviously didn’t know how to use a bullpen. It never occured to him that it was even possible for a lefty to retire a righty. Wow. Wedge could have been wrong-not because Perez is a lefty-but because Perez had been scuffling this year.

Maybe Horton didn’t know that Perez is their only lefty in the pen? Maybe he didn’t know that he has NEVER been used as a LOOGY? Maybe he doesn’t know that other managers have other ideas? That maybe they are right sometimes?

I have a hard time watching this team because of the maniacal pitching/hitting matchups-and they often don’t even work.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

If anyone is awake right now...

2005 NLCS Game 5 is on MLB Network. Bottom 2nd. Watching this game is the ultimate hangover/Cards loss cure.
