Game 30 Open Thread
Cueto v. Pineiro
Can Pineiro keep up his sinking triumphs?
Rasmus starts in CF and bats second. Hooray!
Let's continue a long cards history of beating up on the Reds.
Carpenter had a good long toss session today.
Khalil Greene will show us whether his arm still works.
Maybe Shane Robinson will make a BABIP driven showing today.
Am I at 75 words yet?
Umm. Pujols has 11 home runs. Eleven! That's a lot.
Go Cards!!

the back end has a point because it’s the first base line and third base line meeting

think about it
the diagonal parts are the 1st and 3rd base lines, and the square part makes it easier to see whether a pitch is a strike or not (compared to how it would be if it were a square like the other bases, with the corner pointing towards the pitcher)
by nota bene on May 8, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right.
It defines the strike zone and the foul lines, but it’s behind them, technically in foul territory. And, it used to be a square in the earlier days of baseball, which is why pitches are called on the “corners.”

The original

no
this is becoming trite. but the original post said that plate is in fair territory and used the apex shape of the rear part of the plate to exemplify that it is in fair territory. saying that from of the plate is square because it is in fair territory makes no0 sense and there is no reason to believe he meant that
by prophetjohn on May 8, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How does
“the plate’s in fair territory, that’s why it has the shape that it does” make any sense whatsoever?
The square home plate had the corner in the same place as the apex of the 5-sided home plate. The current shape is NOT due to fair-foul but is due to ball-strike. If you don’t understand that, then whatever. I’m done.

if being insulting
is what it takes to cover up the poor logic you followed, then fine, but there’s no way that you can come to the conclusion he meant, “the front of the plate is square because it is in fair territory.” it makes absolutely no sense, so my logically mind subconsciously dismissed it as a possibility

what’d you mean by that line?
The whole and entire plate is in fair territory. The only reason that the foul lines don’t come all the way back to the plate is because of the batters boxes.

as bad of an idea as that steal was
bunting would have been about 500% worse of an idea. The guy on first was meaningless and trading an out to get him to second base would just be insane.
OTOH, this may have been a case where they were expecting defensive indifference and didn’t get it. And if so, good on the reds, because i HATE defensive indifference.

well then he forced his own hand...
but i still hate the hit and run unless the guy has the speed to straight up steal the base, which Thurston has demonstrated to be a problem. but i get ya. not trying to be argumentative. we just made a lot of silly mistakes that hurt us tonight. that was the last one
by kalmavet on May 8, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
thursty has the speed, just not the jump
i completley agree with you…bad decisions, but the bad decision was bring larue in, not the hit and run, inho
though apparently it was a straight steal, and in that case, i have no clue what the hell anyone was thinking
by VolsnCards5 on May 8, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if it was a straight steal
that’s even worse lol. yeah it’s the jump that’s the problem. i agree the worse mistake was LaRue if tony had it in his that he need to hit-and-run. but one mistake led to another which is frustrating
by kalmavet on May 8, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, that pitch wasn't hittable
and the CIN announcers said thurston got a great jump, though they never showed it. it WAS for sure a great throw, a perfect throw, and anything short of a perfect throw and he would have been safe.
Still a terrible move, but it was really, really close to working.

Justin Verlander sure seems to have found his shit again
After a complete game two-hit shutout tonight, he’s 3-0 with an ERA of 0.39 and 31 K in 23 innings over his last three starts.

Aramis Ramirez...
Looks like he’ll be DL-bound with a dislocated shoulder

That fucking sucks. I hate to hear about shoulder problems.

why are all the wrong cubs getting hurt?
except for z. i actually like both derek lee and aramiz ramirez. and a ram has a pretty tough injury. that could turn into a season

he's a cardinal killer
for sure. but he’s a good player and he’s classy. contrary to soriano or zambrano, i wouldn’t mind seeing him play for the cards.
if someone like soriano played for the cards, i would not pull for him

hoffman
looked unbelievably good. every fastball was at the same imaginary point low and on the corner, and then he’d get to a changeup count and they couldn’t do anything with it.
by DanUpBaby on May 8, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he didn't throw many changeups
I think Hoffpauir got one. It looks like guys are sitting changeup and he keeps feeding fastballs.

last third
of the Cards’ game was ok… but I live two hrs from Cincy and if I had driven over there in a drizzle…. the first six innings would have had me upset.
On the plus side, Yadi really is turning into a smart hitter.

i'd elaborate more
but that’s about all tony said haha. then i headed over the NBA game so if they get from Tony someone will have to let us know. He was testy so i doubt he says anything more
by kalmavet on May 8, 2009 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Tony testy?
No way!
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
by mattyfrommo on May 8, 2009 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
they just reran it on FSNMW
and he was more than testy, he was a flat out dick. said it was a bad call on his part & the catcher made a perfect throw. then he mouthed off to Strauss about asking an easy question and saying he wouldn’t ask about something else that happened in the game, which i couldn’t make out. and Strauss said, “well, actually yes i would”. then Tony goes, "is that all you got? next question!
so we know it wasn’t Thursty’s fault, so i take back what i said about Thursty being stupid. he was just following orders. and those orders were stupid.

“Son, we play in a game that needs runs and those runs need to be generated by men with talent. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, gdm426? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Thurston and curse the Cardinals; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Thurston’s out, while tragic, probably wins games and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, wins games. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties you want me in that dugout, you need me in that dugout. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to win something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the wins I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide them. I would rather you just said “thank you,” and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a bat and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to."

methinks that might have been easier. And in H’er D.
