Cueto v. Pineiro

Can Pineiro keep up his sinking triumphs?

Rasmus starts in CF and bats second. Hooray!

Let's continue a long cards history of beating up on the Reds.

Carpenter had a good long toss session today.

Khalil Greene will show us whether his arm still works.

Maybe Shane Robinson will make a BABIP driven showing today.

Am I at 75 words yet?

Umm. Pujols has 11 home runs. Eleven! That's a lot.

Go Cards!!

i'll go with

the back end has a point because it’s the first base line and third base line meeting

by albrtfn on May 8, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

think about it

the diagonal parts are the 1st and 3rd base lines, and the square part makes it easier to see whether a pitch is a strike or not (compared to how it would be if it were a square like the other bases, with the corner pointing towards the pitcher)

by nota bene on May 8, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Right.

It defines the strike zone and the foul lines, but it’s behind them, technically in foul territory. And, it used to be a square in the earlier days of baseball, which is why pitches are called on the “corners.”

by spants on May 8, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

“The disadvantage of the square shape was that it was difficult for both the umpires and the pitchers to pinpont the strike zone.”

"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum

by scoot on May 8, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

That was what I was saying.

Classic underachiever.

by spants on May 8, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

your phrasing made it unclear

and the intellectual process you have pass through to believe that he meant the front of the plate and not the back require some impressive mental gymnastics

My phrasing where?

You’ve been doing the mental gymnastics.

Classic underachiever.

by spants on May 8, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

no u lol

he said, “the plate is in fair territory, that’s why it has the shape it does.” you said, " not sure that’s true."

how could we know for sure you were arguing the logic of the shape and not whether or not the plate is fair or foul?

by prophetjohn on May 8, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

It became clear

as we went on and you know it.

Classic underachiever.

by spants on May 8, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

ah cool

but that link explicitly say that the shape makes calling balls and strikes easier proving that the original shape theory stated is correct

by prophetjohn on May 8, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

The original

post stated that the plate was in fair territory and THAT was why it was shaped the way it is. I disagreed with that reasoning as the plate changed shape to make the calling of balls and strikes easier for the umps. The logic behind the original post was wrong.

Classic underachiever.

by spants on May 8, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

no

this is becoming trite. but the original post said that plate is in fair territory and used the apex shape of the rear part of the plate to exemplify that it is in fair territory. saying that from of the plate is square because it is in fair territory makes no0 sense and there is no reason to believe he meant that

by prophetjohn on May 8, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

How does

“the plate’s in fair territory, that’s why it has the shape that it does” make any sense whatsoever?

The square home plate had the corner in the same place as the apex of the 5-sided home plate. The current shape is NOT due to fair-foul but is due to ball-strike. If you don’t understand that, then whatever. I’m done.

Classic underachiever.

by spants on May 8, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

if being insulting

is what it takes to cover up the poor logic you followed, then fine, but there’s no way that you can come to the conclusion he meant, “the front of the plate is square because it is in fair territory.” it makes absolutely no sense, so my logically mind subconsciously dismissed it as a possibility

as bad of an idea as that steal was

bunting would have been about 500% worse of an idea. The guy on first was meaningless and trading an out to get him to second base would just be insane.

OTOH, this may have been a case where they were expecting defensive indifference and didn’t get it. And if so, good on the reds, because i HATE defensive indifference.

they just reran it on FSNMW

and he was more than testy, he was a flat out dick. said it was a bad call on his part & the catcher made a perfect throw. then he mouthed off to Strauss about asking an easy question and saying he wouldn’t ask about something else that happened in the game, which i couldn’t make out. and Strauss said, “well, actually yes i would”. then Tony goes, "is that all you got? next question!

so we know it wasn’t Thursty’s fault, so i take back what i said about Thursty being stupid. he was just following orders. and those orders were stupid.

It kind of sounds like he’s [Duncan] just running around like a puppy out there – full speed ahead in random directions. – BTown Birds Fan

“Son, we play in a game that needs runs and those runs need to be generated by men with talent. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, gdm426? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Thurston and curse the Cardinals; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Thurston’s out, while tragic, probably wins games and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, wins games. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties you want me in that dugout, you need me in that dugout. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to win something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the wins I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide them. I would rather you just said “thank you,” and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a bat and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to."

Tigers vs. Indians

Link

Great catch by Granderson. The play-by-play man for the Indians makes it even better.

not sure what chuck’s up to, but he’s got a game thread due up later. In other news, I wake up too late on Saturdays.
