I'm curious to see if he recieves the same hub-bub
about PEDs as McGwire and other “should be HOFers”.
With Arod and Manny, Baseball is losing a lot of credibility.
Thank the Baseball Gods, for Albert Pujols.
Stupid Sexy Flanders!!!
careful...
Were there ever any rumors about Manny and PED’s? If not, why wasn’t he considered the “greatest pure slugger” after A-Rod’s scandal?

difference between
Some of those guys and guys like Giambi. Those guys still deny using, either by coming out and denying it, or by remaining silent.
The “should be” HOFers would improve their chances if they would admit to their wrongdoings. Not that I agree with this thought, but its the medias way of holding these players accountable for what they did/didn’t do.

Saying it was a drug prescribed by a doctor and not necessarily illegal steroids. Who knows.
Not afraid to nitpick
eventually these people are going to need
to start using new excuses. Every effing player that’s been caught has said that it just happened to be in some other substance someone gave them or were prescribed.
Example: I was feeding my pegacorn and he bit me. Turns out their saliva contains PEDs. Who knew?
Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation
Oops
but I meant to continue to say, I totally agree with you. When I saw the part about Manny’s people being expected to trot out that excuse I felt even more inclined to believe the accusations. Although maybe he secretly has some sort of weird disease or something, I’m not saying it’s 100%. But yeah. Red flag right there.
What if this is exactly what happened?
Just because other lying liars have used this as an excuse doesn’t mean it didn’t actually happen.

MLB isn't saying PED???
The official release is very light in info….. it reads more like he took recreational drugs as oppose to PED….. is 50 games a normal drug use suspension?
MLB press release
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that outfielder Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been suspended for 50 games for a violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Ramirez is effective immediately.

mlb's release doesn't look like it
but all the articles i’ve seen are saying ped
their website
is saying ped’s on the front page
I'm waiting for the official press release about this
Something doesn’t smell right about this, I just can’t put my finger on what…
"I just wish that the late Harry Caray were still around so I could hear him mispronounce 'Kosuke Fukudome' every fukun' night" -- Dennis Miller
Yup
It was a supplement prescribed by a doctor. I wonder if they have lists of this stuff that is given out to the players so they know exactly what they can and can’t take. Not that Manny would read it, but the NFL had an issue with this when they tried to suspend 4 players who took a tainted supplement last year. The league knew it was tainted but didn’t inform the players.
I’m tired of all the witch hunts for this stuff. Put a list of what is banned on the mlb.com website so everyone knows. Then there’s no excuses.

Eessh
No kidding… I mean I doubt there aren’t any drugs on that list that aren’t performance enhancing drugs, but it’d be nice to see the list! Wonder if Cialis is on the list…
I miss Brenden Ryan already...
then why not post them for all to see?
Doesn’t that make sense? Or why not make sure that all players get their prescriptions certified by an MLB medical team so this can’t happen. I don’t understand why everything has to be kept in secret.

how is it full of cheaters?
lately, they’ve been catching the people who are juicing. Doesn’t the prove more that it’s no longer FULL of cheaters. Sure, it used to be, but I honestly believe it’s getting better. Especially with a name like Manny getting suspended, a ton of players will be thinking twice.

Blah. Wish I had read more comments before responding to Azru above
Who was the Cardinals minor leaguer who recently tested positive for a drug test? If I recall, there was some hubbub because some news reports simply assumed it was a P.E.D. when it was difficult to determine if that was actually the case. It’s still impossible to know what kind of drug we’re talking about here. People shouldn’t assume things like that (including myself now)
i don't know if it was him
but i know someone was suspended for using recreational drugs and not ped’s (and there was confusion with it)
+1
My other problem is that if someone tests positive now, everyone assumes they were doing something before or have been doing something for years, when there’s no proof of that at all.
As Manny said, he’s been tested before and came up clean. He should be able to have MLB release all his negative test results and they should release exactly what he tested positive for. The union won’t let them do this, however, and I think that makes it really difficult because lack of evidence of anything only amounts to more suspicion of the players.

I think if Manny wanted to
He could release what it was he tested positive for.

Didn't JC Romero
test positive a few years ago because he and his wife were taking fertility drugs to conceive? Manny could’ve been taking something like that.
Classic underachiever.
first thing i thought after i read all the reports

Nowadays, with all the different supplements available, you really have to a Strong incentive to be a PEDant and avoid taking banned substances.

You are a borderline major leaguer/borderline starter/borderline superstar. To juice or not to juice? All penalties aside (ie policy pre-2003).
I, for one, am juicing.
I have this weird problem where I keep reading "intentional" as "international", and confuse myself thoroughly when wondering why Pujols doesn't have more IBBs.
I don't think I could do it but that's largely due to my personality
which frankly is not the kind of personality that produces lots of athletes in the first place (to say nothing of me as a physical specimen).
That said I would find it fairly easy to forgive borderline guys who do it. Still doesn’t mean I agree with it, but we’re not exactly talking about child molesters or communist dictators here.
Temptation to Use Would Be Great
I, as a Cubs fan, thought Sosa was juicing, but I cheered him on as he was hitting all those home runs in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Of course, there is no hard evidence that Sosa juiced. To be brutally honest, I couldn’t have blamed Sosa for juicing back then. He was making a lot of money and getting a lot of attention. I don’t want to be sanctimonious and puritanical by ripping players, who might have juiced during the steroids era.

If this is steroids
There is a huge distinction to be made here. He tested positive after the wink-wink nod-nod culture has been ended. I’m at the point where I am not going to focus on the stuff that happened when everyone looked the other way. I’m sure more people used than we can imagine. I don’t like it. I don’t condone it. But if you’re going to assign blame you can assign it to almost everyone at every level of the game.
This is different, assuming it is a PED. There is an effort to clean this thing up now. Way too late, but it is there. In my book, this puts Manny in much worse shape than Mac, Bonds, A-Rod, Palmerio, et al. You can make an effective argument either way regarding a HOF case when there was not any oversight, because you don’t know what you don’t know still. This is not the same thing. This should be pretty damning to Manny’s case. Again, this is on the assumption this is for PED.
after the bit with the traveling secretary
and the potential game-throwing-to-get-traded last year, manny should definitely much worse shape than Mac, at least.

also, interesting non-sequitur quote from TLR at the end of the article.
What was the point of that TLR quote? LOL
I don’t see how there could be an “innocent” reason Manny was taking a WOMEN’s FERTILITY DRUG other than the post-steroid explanation, but how could the man be so dumb? Really, it’s mind boggling.

well, i can think of lots of legitimate reasons why a man would need a testosterone booster,
even if it is a drug sometimes prescribed to women.
what i have trouble with is the notion that a reasonably intelligent physician treating a high-profile baseball player would prescribe him a substance to rejigger his testosterone levels with NO THOUGHT that this might a) act as a performance enhancer or b) trigger a positive test on a drug screen. or that a ballplayer would go to a physician to boost his testosterone levels without thinking the same things.

HCG
can be used to treat men with hypogonadism, and to treat men who aren’t producing sperm. So, yes, it’s often used as a fertility drug for men.
I did a bunch of Googling, but I’ll just link to HCG’s Wiki page.
Classic underachiever.
Manny
does have 3 kids, but he is getting older. Also, if his wife is having fertility issues and he is borderline in sperm production, the doctor may have decided to treat Manny as well.
I don’t know why, but I lean towards believing that Manny took this for infertility treatment.
Classic underachiever.
could be. it definitely has a valid use as a treatment for a low sperm count.
my concern is, as i said above, that messing with a pro athlete’s testosterone levels is a pretty boneheaded thing for a doc to do.
but there are some stupid docs out there. it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
the truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark/ it scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark -- macmanus
I was on ESPN.com
and someone was saying that Manny didn’t actually test positive for hCG. His testosterone was elevated and they, I guess, got his prescription records to prove that he was taking something.
I know most athletes are very conscientious about their bodies, but if the doctor didn’t explain how this would effect Manny’s body chemistry, or he explained it only in terms of sperm… It’s bound to be confusing for some people. You really need to be a self-advocate and into medical research to truly understand drug and body chemistry.
Classic underachiever.
maybe after he gets lawyered up, he might try to put some of the records out there.
at this point, it’s probably on him, fair or not, to clear his name.
sadly, some members of the public might have as much or more trouble with a guy having a low sperm count as a guy using PED’s.
the truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark/ it scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark -- macmanus
so it's up to Manny to say he's got a low sperm count or he uses PED?

He was going to appeal,
but changed his mind at the last minute. Maybe his wife didn’t want him publicizing what is already a difficult thing to deal with. Maybe.
Classic underachiever.
Totally did not see this coming
But, in a way, I could. The DRUG he used, though…
How many guys would get busted using a women’s fertility drug? Not many. Manny is one of the rare exceptions.
Welcome to Baseball Heaven.
He was pretty useless on Around the Horn yesterday
though I’m taking that as an accurate representation of his sports reporting skills?

I just thought of something pretty interesting
which probably has already been thought of before…
but wouldn’t it be frickin awesome if there was some kind of metric that accounted for steroid usage? like multiply the person’s stats by .9 or something? I don’t think that it makes as big of a difference as some believe, except in the home run department. these players still would have been good without the steroids (and the ones that did steroids that still were not very good prove this)

Dude
you’re setting yourself up for a fall.
This innocent hero mentality is part of the problem. The sooner we face the fact that almost everyone who’s played ball in the last 15 years has used PEDs, the sooner we can be adults about this and stop putting our fingers in our ears when the subject comes up.
I’m not saying I think Albert did ’em. But if it came out tomorrow that he did, I would not be surprised and I would not be upset. He would be no worse than most of the other players in the game. And I would still hold the commissioner, owners, managers, coaches, and trainers much more responsible than I do any one player. They knew bad shit was being done and turned a blind eye because they were making money hand over fist .
Let us not forget that the players aren’t the only ones making bank here…or the only ones who cheated to do so.
I guess I am definately not ready
