Sugar Shane Up, Dick Down

Per Goold:

The St. Louis Cardinals placed center fielder Rick Ankiel on the 15-day disabled list this morning so that they could return their bench to full and healthy strength. Outfielder Shane Robinson, one of the leading hitters for the Class AAA affiliate, was promoted and will be activated before today’s game.

“I think the important thing here is that Rick will get regular treatment, and he’ll get a chance to recover without the day-to-day rigors of playing at the major-league level,” general manager John Mozeliak said.

Ankiel will go to the team’s facility in Jupiter, Fla., to begin his rehab.

Quality move in my opinion, albeit two days too late. How does this affect the 40 man going into the winter?

Outfield Grit!

Outstanding. I hope he has a nice cup of coffee, however short term it is.

Current 40-man only has 38

That is according to the stlcardinals website. So I guess they have room, but it would take a spot that could be used for someone else later.

Who do we have that we might need to protect from the Rule 5 draft this winter?

Awesome

Also nice to have another RH OF now…

Didn't see your fan post

I’m stoked. I want to see him tear it up. His grit cannot be contained.

What's gotta happen to get Craig called up!?

He can play LF and 3B

Patiently awaiting the day Colby Rasmus does this: .275/.381/.551/.932, 29HR, in St. Louis...and I'm wanting an Allen Craig call-up!

It will be interesting

to see how he is used. This may be a glimpse of the future outfield if Ankiel is not with this team next year. Robinson makes a lot of sense – good pinch hitter with speed, good leadoff hitter who might platoon against lefties, and a RH outfielder who can play all outfield positions.

future outfield

Who do you guys see as the outfielders in say 3 years? Rasmus, Robinson, Jones? Dunc still be around?

by cowcards on May 7, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think robinson has a major league future in a non-TLR Cards team

I think Rasmus and Jones are the two we’ll build around. I could see Ludwick still here in 3 years, and I think it’s more than likely Duncan is too, though they’ll both be more pricey. John Jay and Joe Mather also look more than likely to be part of the scene.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

If Thudwick keeps hitting

he may be worth the investment to keep him here at retail price…although I guess we really need to have fewer broken-down starters on the payroll and ideally more home-grown ones in the rotation for that to be comfortable financially.

Craig

started off hot just like he was in spring training. However, after a hot start he has cooled down considerably. I would like to see what he can do but I think Robinson gets the nod because of his abiltiy to play CF.

Nice to have another RH OF

Plus, it’d be nice to see him play well while he can. Too bad he didn’t get a hit in his first ML at bat, though. I was rooting for him.

Welcome to Baseball Heaven.
