Game 27 Overflow Thread

Wainwright looked like he was pitching without an index finger for a while, there.

(The trivia fact I cut from the game thread: Wainwright had allowed just the 26 home runs in two seasons of starts, but somehow gave up three home runs three times in that period.)

how much better are the odds going to be for

a pinch hitter, given how badly pinch hitters usually hit, compared to Thurston against a lefty?

It’s a bad bench, but that’s not making the difference in this game, Wainwright pitching through a dead arm is.

by DanUpBaby on May 5, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

It limits our options and it prevents us from putting the best defensive arrangement on the field.

It’s poor roster management. We now effectively have one pinch hitter for the next 3 innings. You don’t think that’s important?

oh, I think the roster construction is dead wrong

but then I also think LaRue’s not a very good backup catcher. I think on a game to game basis both of these things are not worth F this F-ing, and I think it’s had no significant effect on the outcome of this or any one game.

by DanUpBaby on May 5, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

in this one game

I’m not sure what else is going to do it. You’ve replaced the worst defensive player, you’ve used two pitchers. There’s nobody out there on offense I’d absolutely want to pinch hit for in a platoon situation now that Schumaker is out.

Don’t get me wrong, I wish this team had 11 pitchers and a big bench, and I certainly don’t get leaving Ankiel on the active roster unless he’s playing tomorrow, although if he is near game shape that’s worth taking into account in this whole value equation.

But the fact is that back when teams had all those bench players they were underutilized in much the same way that Brad Thompson is now.

by DanUpBaby on May 5, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

So we should wait until it costs us a game before we get mad at the roster construction?

Not to mention that the Cardinals have now locked themselves into the players on the field for the rest of this game.

When your catcher plays 140+ games in a healthy season, who would be a better catcher?

LaRue’s got a cannon and can handle behind the plate, and while he’s not slamming homeruns his bat isn’t the Red’s version.

Have I been watching the wrong team?

Because I don’t recall our catcher playing 140 games in any of the years he’s been with the club. . .

And I’ll take a LH catcher to utilize platoon splits when possible. That would be better than LaRue.

This bench situation is a debacle

Why are we only carrying 12 position players, to start with, and then when one of them gets injured, for what will probably be at least a few days, we don’t DL him and play it on the safe side, and don’t call up anybody to solidify the bench. There is absolutely no defending management (be it all TLR, or a little bit of Moz…I doubt it’s all on Moz) on this one.

oh,

hit the ball well today, with a short bench you have to give guys shots and save something for the pitchers spot whenever it comes up. If barden pinch hits and reaches and doesn’t tie the game you have perez virtually end that inning immediately, and you gave away one of your last 4 outs

La Russa Bashing

I enjoy coming on this site to see what our fans are saying about our beloved Cards, but it seems that there is so much hatred towards La Russa that I really don’t understand…We all know Tony is unorthodox in many ways, but what seems to be ignored is how more often than not, those odd decisions pay off. With the exception of the ‘07 disaster, the Cards have exceeded expectations. Many times in this young season, Tony mixed and matched and many of these unheralded bench players have come through, just like so many times in the past. It doesn’t work every time, but it sure does work alot. Why do many people on this site only tend to focus on the negatives? We have a great record, but have hit a rough spot…We will get through…

since I've been doing some of the criticizing

I don’t hate TLR and I’m glad he’s still managing the team, the guy is going to richly deserve his first ballot HOF selection when he’s up for it. In fact I think they oughta retire #10 when he’s done with it.

Sometimes Tony makes decisions that are wildly unorthodox, but he has his reasons for them (for example, batting the pitcher 8th). But then Tony makes these goofy, seemingly impulsive decisions that don’t have any discernible logic to them—like carrying 13 pitchers and 3 bench players and pinch hitting for position players in the 6th inning, or pinch hitting with Brendan Ryan instead of Ryan Ludwick with the bases loaded, or not using Albert Pujols in the All-Star Game………

by nota bene on May 5, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree with many moves as well

and by all means, voicing those opinions are exactly what sites like this are for…but…there are a good number of people who only choose to blast and never tend to look at the positives…I don’t get alot of his decisions either, but I sure am glad he’s our coach…we could have a revolving door like so many other teams…

I don't know

Either way, I think that the most important job of a manager is being able to motivate players and keep the team chemistry. However, given the fact that most guys who do that well, have absolutely no clue when it comes to strategy, maybe they should just make “strategist” a separate position.

Pedro Feliz doubles (5) on a fly ball to second baseman Joe Thurston, deflected by right fielder Ryan Ludwick. Jayson Werth scores. Two out.

Sounds like a blooper-reel play….

As Al so eloquently put it

the reason the Cardinals lost tonight was because they were only putting up single digits in the innings they scored.

We just needed that 10 run inning to pull this one out!

but that wasn’t his fault.

I’ll never again propose that Yadi bat second, after tonight. Not because he’s slow, but because he didn’t effing hustle around the bases.

Pujols is behind only Carlos Pena in home runs

his BA will probably get better btw, due to a low BABIP. Chase Utley has a ridiculous OPS right now btw (glad I have Utley and Pena on my fantasy team!)
