Game 26 - Post Game Thread

For those of you who didn't watch the game, Rick Ankiel collided with the wall in left centerfield in an unfortunate stumble making a spectacular catch.  Ankiel ran full out for a ball hit toward the LF-CF gap.  He made the catch, stumbled, lost his footing and crashed head first (his hands never touched the wall) only to crumple on the ground.  He moved his hands and feet immediately after the play but then remained still for a good 5-10 minutes while the training staff came out and left on a stretcher.

Rick Hummel has a brief exerpt on the situation.

The catch was masterful in a way that I haven't seen since the time of JEdmonds.  The entire stadium let out a collective groan when he hit the wall.  As they showed replays on some TVs located sporadically throughout the stadium (never on the big screen), pockets of individuals would cringe and gasp.  It was painful to watch.

Obviously, we all hope that Rick is OK and that there is no serious injury.  The outcome of the game (a 6-1 loss) is secondary to what happened to our starter on the field.  It's one of those times that the player IS bigger than the game, if in a tragic sense.

Get well soon, Ank.  Cardinal Nation sends its collective well wishes.

Bumped into Mrs. Fritz.

We discussed how she wished you looked more like Skip. I let her cry on my shoulder about it. Then we shared a pair of binoculars to watch him dash to balls and heave them seductively to 1st. She swooned. . . or maybe I did. Can’t remember.

She was/is

madly in love with a former 2Bman of ours, Grudz. All of ‘05, she swooned for him, and I kept telling her he might be good looking, but he’s got a lazy eye. For whatever reason, FSMW never showed his face for more than .5 seconds that entire season, so she couldn’t tell if I was lying or not.

The next year, one of our good friends got a cup of coffee with the Royals while Grudz was on the team. About an hour after he got the call up, my wife sent him and me a a text: Her: “Congrats! Does Grudz have a lazy eye?”

Royals player: “No.”

Me: “Yes he does.”

Him: “What are you talking about?”

Wife: “Tell him I think he’s hot.”

Me: “Tell him he has a lazy eye.”

Him: “Talk to you guys later.”

Brewers interloper here

I was watching the replay of Ankiel’s injury, and I found it just bizarre that your color guy (Hrabosky?) kept asserting that he didn’t “make the transfer” even though you could plainly see him taking the ball out of his glove with his bare hand in every replay they showed. Did anyone else notice that?

"I didn't realize his velocity was that high," said Macha, noting that radar readings aren't flashed during exhibition games.

Calling an OF up...

would be a curious move considering it would either be Stavinoah or Mather. We all know Mather is not doing well, but Stav. might not be a terrible move considering his .341 OBP.

That said, I think I speak for most people here when I say Rasmus in the lineup everyday doesn’t look too bad. In the event that Lud, dunc, or Raz needs a day off I think Skip would be the best fill in. If they do decide to make a roster move I really can’t see them making one that adds very much.

my guess

Thursty Joe will probably see some time in the OF, along with maybe a spot start from Skip. Maybe an infielder gets called up? Hopefully Rick will be okay soon.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on May 5, 2009 4:29 AM EDT up reply actions

My guess

Is that we’re just going to see a crapload of the three primary outfielders who didn’t run into a wall last night, sprinkled with some late-inning Skip in left field. It’s not like Tony’s had any trouble playing Dunc, Raz, or Luddy against lefties or righties this year.

by mojowo11 on May 5, 2009 5:27 AM EDT up reply actions

if

thurston or stavinoha get called up….both are starting off the year terribly in AAA, mather’s OBP is terrible .213, SLG .222. Stavinoha’s is better at .326 but he’s not hitting much, BA .222

either way, skip will be the main 4th OF and if an OF is called up they’ll be a 5th OF
