only have GD today

so I can’t tell….

I’m willing to concede that Thurston is better than Schu @ 2B, but not a LOT better, otherwise he’d surely have the starting job by now.

In fact I keep hearing about how shitty Schumaker’s defensive statistics are, yet I frequently read comments in the game threads about excellent plays Schu made in the field.

Just my $.02….

skip is outstanding at turning double plays

but he’s pretty limited in range and his glove isn’t great on ground balls.

OTOH, thurston just now (in the 8th) didn’t get to a ground ball at third that barden likely would have gotten to. Grumble.

okay

in order, the st louis cardinals three best center fielders

1. colby rasmus
2. richard ankiel
3. skip schumaker

the move went schu → raz. that is an improvement

by prophetjohn on May 31, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

how is that more important

than the collective quality of defense

that’d be like arguing against putting raz in left over dunc

by prophetjohn on May 31, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

the collective quality wen't down

unless you really have faith in skip at second and Thurston at 3rd.

Sometimes they are passable, but you don’t willingly switch into it at the drop of a hat.

by TheBirds on May 31, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I have much more of a problem with

Thurston over Barden @ 3rd than Schumaker over Thurston @ 2nd.

by nota bene on May 31, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't have faith in skip

but i have as much faith in thurston as i do in barden at third.

it was just a roll of the dice. upgrade center and downgrade 2b. and it didn’t work out in our favor. at least not yet

by prophetjohn on May 31, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

if that's really how you feel

this whole situation is made so much better by playing Rasmus over Skip in the first place.

But TLR went with the hot hand over the sensable choice. That is somewhat forgivable, even if it didn’t work out.

by TheBirds on May 31, 2009 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

He took out a guy who can't hit RH pitching very well

in an extremely high leverage situation, and replaced him with a guy who hits RH pitching much better. Then he swapped the defense around and made the OF better (colby in) and the IF worse (Schu in). I can’t see how everyone can be going apeshit over that. There’s plenty of BS tony does that is TOTALLY indefensible, for people to get upset over what (however you feel about whether it’s right or not) was a pretty defensible move.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

by Felonius_Monk on May 31, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously

This is all on Tony. Thurston didn’t have a chance against Affedlt, he should never be hitting. If it weren’t for Tony’s shitty roster management, we would have a decent righty batting now.

St. Louis Cardinals... defying win expectancy since 2008

by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

that one is all him

he got out of the way of a sure HBP. He took a swing at ball 3, which ended up being strike 1. Took a strike, a pitch too late. Then, he got carved up on a pitch inside.

How is that not his fault?

C'mon you Redbirds, lets prove em' wrong, again!

by yer dog first on May 31, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

He should never have been batting in that situation

Thurstons a decent hitter against righties, but he never had a chance against Affedlt, who is an excellent LOOGY. Most teams would have had a decent righty on the bench, but because Tony has 13 relieviers, we don’t.

small sample size

Almost ever single lefty in the history of the game has a platoon split. I doubt that Thurston is different.

St. Louis Cardinals... defying win expectancy since 2008

by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Thurston's minor league numbers

suggest his platoon split is fairly small. One of the things he CAN do is hit lefties OK (or not much worse than righties).

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

by Felonius_Monk on May 31, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

what are you talking about?

His OPS is 80 points higher against righties!

St. Louis Cardinals... defying win expectancy since 2008

by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

it's probably a function of the fact

that he’s not very good against either, but 80 points is pretty small for a platoon split. Makes sense, since contact guys are generally better suited to face same-arm pitchers.

Definitely should have taken (another) one for the team there, though the fact he was probably still feeling the first one makes it understandable that he didn’t ;)

He is a 30 year old rookie, who is being forced to play everyday because we don’t have any other options. He shouldn’t have been batting in that situation.

This game has to be a statement to MO here

To win ball games, we will need a decent, right handed 3B. Thurston did not extend on that ground ball…he short armed, backhand, and he came up empty. Nobody out now, man on second.

And not to mention the K with two men on and Albert waiting.

could’ve won it 3-0, yet it looks like we’re going down 2-1. All their GBs seem to go for hits, ours found gloves.
