Did we really get Mora or was that a joke?

For one thing,

he can actually throw the ball all the way over to first base without it bouncing. For another, look at his home/ road splits. He’s been badly hurt by Safeco since going there. Is he a world beater? No. Is he better than what we’re currently running out there? Abso-lutely.

If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.

by the red baron on May 30, 2009 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

No he doesn't.

He’s really underrated. People hate him because of his high contract, which he definitely isn’t worth, but he’s much better than what we have.

He’s a guaranteed 20+HR, 80 RBI guy with close to a .265/.320/.460 line. He’s also one of the best defenders in baseball. Take it from a guy who lives in Seattle . . . he’s not actually that bad.

On with the (good) youth movement!

he's having a rough start to the year

but don’t ride him off yet. He’s much more consistent than people think and tends to get off to a slow start.

I’ve seen this year after year (well, I’ve only been in Seattle for three, but for all three of those years), and this is the same old story. He will turn it around, and he will put up the same numbers that he has EVERY season since his big year in LA. It’s not like he’s old or anything. The guy is 30.

On with the (good) youth movement!

if the M's will eat half or more of his contract,

I am settling this right now

Cardinals 3B vs Beltre

UZR: Cardinals 0.9
         Beltre: 7.7

RAA: Cardinals: -4
          Beltre: -13.6

Total: Cardinals: – 3.1
         Beltre: -5.9

Hence why I said Beltre Sucks.

Beltre

is a notoriously slow starter. But he always comes around and puts up similar career statistics, so you should look at that.

If anything, we may successfully dodge his rough time of the year and in addition get him for a cheaper price because of his early on statistics.

Yes, let's trade for young,

cost-controlled, consistently good, sustainable-peripherals pitchers and position players.

Awesome strategy.

So when you buy stocks i assume you see which ones are up today and then buy as many of them as possible. Buy high, and then they go even higher! Regression doesn’t exist and there is no such thing as an undervalued commodity.

there's little debate

over whether Beltre is an upgrade over Thurston/Barden etc. The money might be an issue, but the defense alone would be an uprade – i dont understand how this is even a discussion. The offense is either going to be a plus or not, but right now we dont have a solution on either side so fixing one or the other is a good idea. If we can solve either one of them that’s better than what we have currently. I’m for either one – Mark Reynolds or Adrian Beltre. We have holes and if we want to play against an AL team if October we need to fill as many of them as possible.

and albert should have turned two on that two-RBI grounder in the first

the grounds crew was late preparing the field, then hosed the hell out of the first base area, so it was basically muck over at first base. 9 times out of 10 he gets to that ground ball.

From Tony's perspective

While Colby DID cut his hair, he did not run face first into the wall to catch that cold-weather triple and Skip Schumaker downgraded himself to a 3 defensively in Tony’s eyes because he did not catch the 11 singles hit through the right side.

Pinero got the contact Tony was hoping for. The rest of his team let him down.

He regrets giving the start to Ludwick. He feels that he should have made him earn his way back into the lineup and it was unfair to take the playing time away from Aaron Miles as Aaron has apparently grown 7 inches in the offseason and lost his ability to switch hit. Tony thinks that may be why he is wearing the shin guard in all his at-bats and calls himself Nick.

by Hardcore Legend on May 30, 2009 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

agree with "tony's perspective" on that triple

it absolutely should have been caught. It was a towering fly ball that Colby got a terrible jump on and then gave up on when he thought it was out of the park. The dude was halfway to second before it hit the wall; ludwick almost could have run over from RF to catch it. That has to be caught.

Also thought Skip should have gotten to at least a couple of those, but he was lined up way in the hole. WHether that was his fault or oquendo’s is something TLR should know better than us.

actually, UZR disagrees with us

unless they haven’t updated fangraphs yet. His UZR at 2B was -6.9 going into the game last night, and is minus 6.9 today. So those were legit seeing-eye singles that (per the FIP assumptions) won’t be hits much of the time.

it uses discrete data...

so why would the “real time” thing be an issue?

The error bars in UZR are more pronounced in a small sample size

meaning those grounders might have been seen as really hard or really easy to make depending on the information used to determine that. Also, FanGraphs doesn’t update UZR daily, they do it every week.

right, there would be error

but we aren’t trying to determine Skip’s true talent level, we’re looking at whether UZR thought those specific ground balls should have been caught. It should be fine for that, just not useful to project future results.

I didn’t realize that UZR@FG updates weekly. Looking at the “innings played at 2B” data, it’s the same as BR, which updates nightly, which is interesting. They must update everything but the actual UZR number nightly.

Having just watched this game on replay

my desire to ever see Joe Thurston playing third base for the Cardinals again is pretty much at its lowest ebb.

Please, please, please, Mo, can we get a third baseman? I don’t mind the odd shortstop who can’t hit, but a poor fielding third baseman who seems to have no clue how to hit major league pitching is just fugly.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
