What a goofy game.

Albert with an error and two strikeouts.
Larue and Stav with the RBIs.

Nothing makes sense anymore!

He wrote that he was physically unable to call Nolan Ryan’s games at the plate because his eyes were not capable of following the ball from his hand to the plate. He threw it so hard that the guy couldn’t see where it was caught.

If that’s the case and you pick 0-162 there is something seriously wrong with you.

by ducttape16 on May 27, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Cards win, easy

Different question: What would be the best way for the Cubs to lose?

Would you rather the Cubs go 0-162 or lead the league for the entire season only to lose the last 30 in a row, the last 4 to the Cardinals, and fail to make the playoffs by 1 game?

by peach concrete on May 27, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The other teams in the division would have to fail pretty hard

for the Cubs to be 29 games up with 30 to play.

But I can dig it. Assuming they miss the playoffs by a game to us.

by Ferociousaurus on May 27, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

why would they have to be up by 29?

they could be up by 10 and still only lose by 1 if they lose their last 30, it just means the rest of the division has to lose lots of games too

Gak!

Craig’s home run ball flew RIGHT OVER MY HEAD and I still couldn’t get to it. I was standing outside the stadium since I got out of work in the sixth inning and didn’t have time to see more than a couple innings. Craig hits the ball completely out of the stadium, right over my head, and it bounces off 18th Ave and across the street right to the foot of a middle aged couple who looked like they could care less about baseball. Of course, they pick it up while I’ve run to within three feet of them and pocket it.

Wankers. It was a fun few innings at least. I got to see Craig’s homer over my head, John Jay CRUSHED his homer, there was a collision in the outfield and Josh Kinney pitched. Way more fun than Monday’s game.

It’s a good thing I work two blocks from the park.

The most underrated

thing about the 2004 team was the pitching. If you have five average to above average starters taking the mound for 95% of your games, you’re going to win a lot of games.

That’s where I hope we can emulate the 2004 squad.

(Until we trade K Greene for Hanley Ramirez plus cash.)

hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit

by Alxfritz on May 27, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

the pitching is great, and it should stay at a pretty hihg level all year

and the offense well be at worst average when Ludwick comes back.

I don’t see them struggling, maybe they don’t have an easy time with the division, but they’ll be near the top of it.

by TheBirds on May 27, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep. When pitching is

reliable, even marginal improvements in offense can make a huge difference. And the hitters can relax knowing they don’t have to score 6 every night.

by MdRedbirdFreak on May 27, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't know if i'm the only one, but

i don’t think ludwick alone will solve our offensive problems IMO.
Colby still won’t know that left field exists.
Albert seems to be striking out more (you could argue lud’s protection may lower this – i argue not: they were pitching to him weren’t they? and they struck him out.
Ankiel sucks – i don’t know why such a big deal was made of him coming back.
Molina hits singles – which is kinda bad cuz he can’t run. i’m not fooled by the 3 SBs :P
Dunc has cooled significantly – when was his last HR prior to yesterday?
we still have a bunch of AAAAers after that

just sayin…

I don't think the WBC is to blame...

With Opening Day always being a Monday, it was either March 30th or April 6th. Just looking back over the last 25 seasons or so on baseball-reference, Opening Day has never been as early as March 30th. It’s fallen on the 31st two or three times, but it’s fallen on the 5th or 6th a bunch of different times. So I think it was just the calendar…

Brad Thompson

Last pitched May 17 and has only pitched 8 innings for the entire month. How long must we endure this 13 pitchers experiment? I’ve got to think that an additional hitter could’ve helped at some point in the last ten days (particularly if said additional hitter can actually hit esp. lefthanded pitchers).

I suppose with Lohse missing a start we won’t be able to live without 13 pitchers until he is healed up.

It's not a matter of performance

It’s a matter of…

We’ve had Carp on the DL longer than we’ve had him active this season
Wainwright has been ineffective (but got the job done) for most of the year
The rest of our rotation is composed of Kyle Lohse, Todd Wellemeyer, Joel Pineiro
Ryan Franklin is our closer

Going into this year, if you had told me all of those things would happen, I’d peg our team ERA at around 20th in the majors

Game days are tough to follow from Thailand, but this would have been a great one.

What’s the speculation on K Greene, Luddy and other moves? If KG goes on the DL can T Greene be brought up in less than ten days? Thompson seems useless at this point. If TLR thinks he needs 13 pitchers, surely someone in Memphis can add more than Thompson. . .

I'm guessing.....

Luddy gets activated, with Thompson or Boyer going down.

We’ll likely need the extra MR again before the ASB though. 44 games in 45 days with a double header? Crazy.

Yes on TGreene

A player cannot be recalled from the minors unless he is replacing a player who goes on the disabled list. In KG’s case, he would probably have to accept the “assignment” to the DL.
