Hit and Run...oy

Brilliant, just brilliant. Hunchy LaRussa at it again.

by lightbulb on May 26, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

then again

hit and run against a guy who had thrown 8 straight balls (w/2 swinging strikes on balls OOZ) isn’t a great choice.

in all fairness

he didnt get tagged by the 2b.

C'mon you Redbirds, lets prove em' wrong, again!

by yer dog first on May 26, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought it was a good play

Yadi couldn’t get the bat on the ball though

by nota bene on May 26, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

Guy who has (now) walked two straight, and we force a guy to swing on a random pitch? I just don’t see any value.

by lightbulb on May 26, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

most people pitch around pujols

so it’s kinda hard to say he’s not throwing well

by BirdsonFire on May 26, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

it's a gamble

but we’re up four runs, might as well keep the pressure on the defense. I like the call, it just didn’t work out….

by nota bene on May 26, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

and once again

the idea of the hit and run fails horribly.

still i love seeing 5 runs on the board

by kalmavet on May 26, 2009 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

why do it when a guy can not find the strike zone

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

by punchinjudy on May 26, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not a good reason

when the pitcher isn’t throwing strikes anyway. and the risk almost never works. the odds of a wild pitchers throwing a pitch yadi can’t do anything w/ are greater than the odds of Yadi what would’ve been a double-play minus a hit and run. it’s bad gamble almost every single time. i hate the hit and run

by kalmavet on May 26, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

flip side

a pitch that misses is tough to make contact with, but that also means there’s a chance that it’ll handcuff the catcher.

by nota bene on May 26, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

true true

but w/ a wild pitcher you could just get away w/ a straight steal perhaps. I don’t like the call but a pitch like that is one albert would usually steal on successfully. He didn’t seem to get a good jump

by kalmavet on May 26, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

it certainly makes it worse

and to play devil’s advocate to my own argument, he did call it w/ the 2 players that most would say are the most fundamentally sound on the team. Still, I just have my issues w/ the hit and run 90% anyway :)

PS—discussions like these are why this site is great. On the P-D boards this would be a flamefest by now. I love the intelligent chat I get whenever I get a chance to check in on a game thread

by kalmavet on May 26, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, those boards need to be moderated

I like being able to kick stuff around like this….

by nota bene on May 26, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

My thought is that he's only at 95

Let him at least try to have another quick (10-15 pitch) inning. If he can, it saves the bullpen a bit in case we need it in the coming days. If not, you’re not pushing him too hard.

i was wondering the same though

by BirdsonFire on May 26, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, me too

I still have a little trouble with the earned/unearned rules, but I think you’re supposed to assume that the out was made or the extra base wasn’t taken, then make a judgment about whether the run would have scored under those conditions. In this case, even without Yadi’s throwing error it would have been bases loaded when Fielder batted, so the run should be earned.

by BTown Birds fan on May 26, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

GD lists it as earned

the inning went like this:
single
walk (E2 lets lead runner go to third)
HBP

and if he's not going to go out and get somebody from outside the organization

he should announce that he’s gonna stand pat. I want him to go on record that standing pat Barden/Thurston is the best way to go, if that’s what he’s intending to do.

Personally I want to either see Wallace called up way ahead of schedule or I’d like to see them put together an offer for DeRosa (or somebody).

I'm still not convinced there's such a thing as a bad Pixar movie,

but I think the short trailers and TV ads for this movie have been really poorly done. I saw a longer trailer and heard an interview with someone involved, and it sounded like another awesome Pixar movie (not Wall-E awesome, but still awesome).

Don't remember the HBP too much

but I thought it got his pitching hand or at least his pitching arm. I know I have had tense muscles after being hit in the arm so I am assuming that his arm is just really sore and tight and anything he does irritates it. doubt it is a long term concern but it is something to watch out for over the next week and a half

From the AP recap of last night's game, Wainwright talking about his hitting:

"I’m still not even hitting the Mendoza line," said Wainwright, who admitted he’d choose not to hit if he could. "But, I’m seeing the ball better."

link

I was surprised to read that part about him choosing not to hit if he could, and I wonder if some comment he made was misinterpreted. I was always under the impression that he enjoys hitting and takes pride in being quite good at it by pitcher standards. (God knows he pinch hits enough for a pitcher….)
