Is now the time to trade for Matt Holliday?
These past ten games have shown us a few things: our pitching is good and Ludwick is much more important to our offense than most of us realized. But moving forward, I think the biggest improvement we need is another right handed bat in our lineup. Which brings us to Matt Holliday. While his numbers are down playing in Oakland (.269/.352/.429), some of this can be attributed to playing in Oakland and changing leagues. While it can be a concern that his numbers are down away from Coors, I see this as an oppurtunity to get him at a below market price (even dealing with Billy Beane). So what would it take to get him? We would have to give something significant up to acquire him, but the depth of the farm system makes this possible. My offer would be D. Jones, Perez/Todd, and Mortenson/Hawksworth/Boggs. This would be dealing two players from our strengths (OF, RH relief) while including a pitching prospect (none of which project to be better than a #3). I know that Holliday is a free agent after this year, but he could provide help for the stretch run this year and might fall in love with St. Louis as other players have in the past.
So what does everyone else think? I am offering too much, do you not want Holliday at all? If so, who would you rather have to add some pop in our lineup?

I'm pretty sure Oakland
is still getting used to having him in their line-up; trading him probably hasn’t even crossed their minds.
On with the (good) youth movement!
I've been under the impression
that when they made the trade, they were either going to make a run at the division or trade him at the deadline.
They fully intend to

Not a big fan of bringing in Holliday, but
I’ll just throw some names out that could be a good fit
Jermaine Dye – right handed power hitting outfielder
Aubrey Huff – can he still play 3rd? plenty of OF experience as well
Jorge Cantu – can play 3rd
Mark DeRosa – can play all over
All could help boost the offense and all are FA at the end of the season….Dye might have an option though

I definitely agree on Dye and Huff
but I feel DeRosa is another average bat and I feel we need someone who’s really going to make a difference in the lineup (i.e. someone who can hit in the middle of the order).
agreed that...
DeRosa isn’t the solution, but I think he would help

He would certainly help at 3B
and should the Cardinals call up Wallace, he could move to either LF or 2B against LHP to keep him in the lineup.
We screwed up big when we took Kennedy and didn’t get DeRosa. I’d love a second chance at it.

Activate Ludwick, Call up Wallace and T. Greene. Demote Thurston and find something to do with K. Greene.

wat
which active outfielder of ours is as good as cantu?
maybe you think he cannot, but i think he cantu!
and since he's not an outfielder
let’s amend that to say “which active cardinal not wearing a single-digit multiple of five on his back is as good as cantu?”
Using linear weights
Cantu projects to about 15 runs better offensively than Thurston. However, Cantu also has a career -13.6 UZR/150 at third. Thurston on the other hand, is a good defender. Most estimates have him around +5. Combing offense and defense, Thurston actually projects to be slightly better than Cantu.

The rational side of me says...
this current offensive drought is just a phase. The offense was hot in April, so it’s cool in May. But it will even out in the end.
On the other hand, the fan in me is starting to panic. So maybe they should do something, anything to get them of the rut.
Fire the hitting coach? Replace the video machines? Give Fredbird an evil twin? (Dreadbird?).
While it might be an overreaction, I do think there is some merit in replacing the hitting coach. It’s not so much the lack of hitting, but the impatience at the plate that is taking the toll on the team. If you don’t hit a lot, you can still score runs if you walk a lot. That’s a big reason the 80s Cardinals teams did it – when they were good, they lead the league in OBP. When they didn’t, they were bad.
Not so sure it counts as a phase
when you’re trotting out virtually replacement level hitters at 2B, 3B and SS some days. Ludwick will help but I do feel we need another legitimate bat, probably IF.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
by Felonius_Monk on May 26, 2009 5:06 AM EDT up reply actions
well, our OBP was fantastic in April
If Hal’s the one who is responsible for the change in approach from April to May, then yes, fire him (or at least call him onto the carpet and ruffle his feathers). But I’m not sure that it’s his fault. He can’t make people take pitches.

Less on the hitting coach, more on the hitters..
The fact is that right now we are trotting out Pujols and 7 around average hitters with Ludwick on the DL. Duncan and Ankiel aren’t providing the pop we thought they would and Rasmus is struggling. Wallace might help, but adding a big hitting outfielder would definitely go a long way towards helping the offense. We can’t realilistically spend all of our limited resources on pitching (Peavy) and Sheets might not help at all this year. Trading for a 3rd baseman could prove to be a bad move if Glaus comes back or Wallace forces his way up to the big club. A middle of the order RH bat would seem to be the best solution to the problem unless we think Duncan or Ankiel can provide above-average production moving forward.
Is now the time to trade for Matt Holliday?
No. No it isn’t.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
I would say never is the time.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.
Additionally
that deal is far, far, far too much to give up for a marginal OF upgrade for 4 months. Jones is a legitimate top 100 (possibly even top 50 this year) prospect in baseball, AND you want to give up a cheap, back-of-the-rotation starter, AND a top relief prospect, all cheap and under team control for a total of over 15 years, for 4 months of expensive Holliday, who’s maybe a 2-win upgrade over Duncan (if Duncan continues to suck and Ank doesn’t pan out and take his spot) over the course of the contract, at a cost of nearly $10m?
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
Well, not sure what else there is to say about the Holliday thing.
Our awesome 3B from last year is not even guaranteed to play this year. We desperately need a 3B solution that can actually hit, since TLR is gonna keep Thurston as the starter until somebody other than Barden is available for him to use. Ludwick will be back soon, so there’s your Matt Holliday. I think I’d much rather just find out the optimal combination of Ankiel/Colby/Duncan/Craig?/Walrus?/DJ Tools?/Roided up Fredbird? to handle the other outfield spots. Having a SS who can hit a little would be nice, but at least our Ryan is reliable for defensive purposes.
There's no "I" in team. There's also no "I" in "B-g Mac Land".
AGREED - Pujols Needs Protection
and I am not so sure that Ludwick is going to provide it when he comes back. He definately cannot be any worse, but he was also slumping when he went down. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing teams constantly pitch around Pujols and if you think we are frustrated can you imagine how Pujols feels. If this continues I would have to think that Pujols would want no part of the Cards future. If the Cards want to do anything this year and keep the best player in the game they had better come up with a solution.
Why?
Albert Pujols is the best hitter in baseball. If your choice is pitch to the best, or someone else, than that’s not much of a choice, is it? Lineup protection has been shown to be a myth again and again by every sabermetrically-inclined person who has looked into it.
No, the Cardinals need Ludwick back because he’s a better player than Duncan, Rasmus, Ankiel, and he will replace many at bats of these individuals, therefore improving the offense.

"Albert Pujols is the best hitter in baseball"
only stands up if he’s willing to be walked every time he is pitched around. The best hitter in baseball doesn’t swing at 23.6% of the balls thrown out of the strike zone.
Take the walks, albert, and you’ll protect yourself.
- "I went at it and didn’t slow down, so it kind of bounced off me." -Lil' Dunc
I wouldn't be against it.....
If the deal was right.
I still think getting Luddy healthy, getting Molina back on track, and finding an option for 3B is probably more important.
And that said, I’m not really FOR acquiring Derosa, unless the price is relatively cheap. Sure he had last year, but he isn’t hitting this year as of yet. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t, but I’ve never understood trading for unproven guys that currently aren’t hitting, and thinking they’ll save the day.

Ugh
Why does Matt Holliday always come up? Why are Cardinals fans obsessed with getting him? He’s good, yes, but how good? And how much better is he than what the team already has? He’s probably better than Ankiel or Rasmus (for now anyway), but those guys have value in the fact that they can play center field, which Holliday cannot. He’s better than Duncan, sure…but Holliday would probably cost young players the team could use in the upcoming seasons. So, you’re replacing Duncan with Holliday and losing all the value Jones/Boggs/Garcia/whoever will provide in the next few seasons. The deal may even include Ryan Ludwick, and that is a sideways trade. I don’t see any dramatic difference between the two.
So basically the cost-benefit does not come out in St. Louis’s favor. So why do it? Now, if Holliday were a good two-way shortstop or third baseman, than we may have something…but he’s not. They don’t need him.

We don't need an above-average hitter?
Seriously, let’s call the cardinals position players what they really are: Pujols, Ludwick, and a bunch of around average hitters. We have to upgrade somewhere to make a difference in the playoffs and there are no difference-making shortstops or third basemen available (which we might not need anyways). Yadi’s the man on defense, and Shoemaker is going nowhere. Do you still think that Ankiel or Duncan is going to be above average at the plate? Sorry, but I don’t. Holliday is down right now, which means the price has probably dropped. If we’re making a run for the playoffs, trading our second best hitter (Ludwick) to get him isn’t going to happen.
The reason Holliday has came up over the past year is because he’s available; the same reason Ben Sheets and Derek Lowe were all over this sight during the offseason. Now he fits a obvious need for this team to be serious contenders. I disagreed with LaRussa last year when he said we needed an impact bat, but this year we are without Glaus too. We just went 5-2 over a seven game stretch when our starters’ ERA was under 1!
The last thing I need to say regards our prospects in general. While building from within is great, some of these guys aren’t going to pan out. Do we seriously think that Rasmus, Wallace, Jones, Garcia, Todd, and Perez are all going to reach their potential? It’s probably not going to happen for all of them, which means we have to take advantage of some of thier value now. Am I saying trade them all Walt Jocketty style? Absolutely not. But at some point when we are close to be serious contenders (which I feel we have a legitimate shot now) we have to make a move to put us over the top. Pujols isn’t getting any younger and has been upfront in saying the Cards have to be committed to winning if he’s going to stay. While I don’t know the man personally, I’d be willing to bet some internet dollars that he doesn’t mean commit to ALL of the prospects, close our eyes, and pray they work out. We saved some money in the offseason to provide the flexibility for a move like this, so if not Holliday, let’s try to get somebody similiar who’s going to make an impact now.
Trading multiple someones from the Rasmus/Wallace/Jones/Garcia/Todd/Perez pool absolutely is not worth a few months of Matt Holliday. It isn’t. Period. Now, if you pick two of those guys and they don’t work out, than you made a good trade. But Wallace WILL mash as a major leaguer, Rasmus WILL be a plus defender with some pop, and Jones is the best pure athlete in the entire organization. So, you have to figure that those guys will be of some use over the next few years. They have to. Garcia, Todd, Perez, Motte, Boggs, Mort? Who knows. But none of those guys will be centerpieces to a Holliday trade.
Holliday WILL be a rental, mark my words. If he plays crappy, posting a .750-.800 OPS or something, than it wasn’t worth the trade, because he’ll be NO BETTER than what Duncan/Rasmus/Ank have provided or are likely to provide. That’s the very definition of a marginal upgrade. If he tears the cover off the ball and plays a good leftfield, than it may put the Cards over the edge. BUT…then he’ll be gone, and we’ll be out several guys who probably will be of some use. Is that pennant run worth it? Maybe, but I’m still not positive. Why does one have to exist without the other?
Look, Ankiel can’t hit as poorly as he has. It isn’t possible. He’ll be worth something, at least a plus bat out of center field. Rasmus, a rook, may not hit much better than this…but he may, and he’s also a plus fielder. The pieces in place are good enough to produce better results in the OF. They just need to do it. I’m not sold that Matt Holliday, suddenly uprooted from one team, where he’s not hitting, to another will just magically hit bombs like mad and answer our prayers. I think, as far as the outfield is concerned, we’re better off letting it ride, because the risk of attempting an upgrade there isn’t worth what it would cost in my mind.
Third base? Well now that needs to be improved. I’m willing to get on board cashing in pieces for a third baseman, because that spot is and will be a black hole as long as it is manned by Thurston, who is bad, and Barden, who I’m not convinced is anything above a utility infielder. Now, who is available there? We know De Rosa is, but I don’t think he’s the answer right now. However, I’ll bet that as we get closer to the ASB, and teams start falling apart, something will open up. If not, then they need to consider bringing up the Walrus. Point is, that situation needs to be addressed FIRST. If nothing can be found there, try SS. This team needs an upgrade there too. I’m betting something will open up.

couple points
1) Matt Holliday could sign longer term with the Cardinals, as this was one of the teams he’s always liked. However, he’s a Boras client and was expecting to get a little more than Carlos Lee type money (6/7 years at $20-22 million per year). I think that will be way off after this year as teams aren’t signing players to those kinds of contracts (Unless it’s one of the 8 elite super-market teams)
2) Garret Atkins is available from the Rockies for a 12-pack of Bud Dry and a beer koosie. He also has one more Arb year. (not sure Atkins is worth a 12 pack of Bud Dry) And I understand the Rangers would trade one of their corner players for Pitching (not sure that’s a match)

My take on Holliday
I’m not going to say that we should do everything in our power to get him, but why would any team turn away a guy who, per 162 games, does this:
.316/.384/.545 for an OPS of .928, an OPS+ of 130 with 29 homers, 112 RBI, 47 other extra base hits, and 15 steals. To add to this, one season he led the league in avg, hits, doubles, and RBI. He also had 6 triples and 36 homers that year.
He has played 5 full seasons, getting 10 or more steals four times, 25 or more homers three times, 100 or more RBI twice, 5 or more triples three times, 30 or more doubles 4 times, hit .320 or higher three times, had an OBP upwards of .400 twice, SLG over .580 twice.
Looking at how he ranks in active players’ career stats:
5th in AVG – .316
17th in OBP – .384
12th in SLG – .545
23rd in Adjuested OPS+ – 130
On his baseball-reference comps lists are the following players:
David Wright, Jason Bay, Hideki Matsui, Miguel Cabrera, Chase Utley, Grady Sizemore, Lance Berkman, Magglio Ordonez, Larry Walker, Mike Sweeney, et. al.
Are you saying you wouldn’t want any of those guys? Really? Over Duncan or Ankiel?
I understand the defense would not be Grady Sizemore-esque, but it could be better than Duncan – by a lot – Ludwick – by a little? – and possibly Ankiel – minus the arm.
Adding Holliday would not be good
That adds another OF, and we’ve got more than enough right now. Promote T. Greene again and find something to do with Khalil. When Lud comes back, things will get rolling again.
Welcome to Baseball Heaven.
Hey Guys
A’s fan here. I think if the A’s do trade Holliday, Beane will absolutely want a third baseman and/or a shortstop that is going to be above average. Holliday is a huge trading chip for the team, even with him being a free agent at the end of the year. I think the A’s have specific holes they need to fill which they’ll be using Holliday to try and fill if they continue to flounder.

It depends on Glaus.
If Troy is coming back in a reasonable time frame (not likely) we stand pat. If he is out then let us look to Beltre. Adrian is in his last year of his contract and if Seattle is out of it a salary dump might right up their alley. Adrian will be owed 6m for the second half of the year. He has a limitted no trade and he is in is 5th year with the Mariners. So I am not sure if the 10-5 rule would apply. All GM’s know that prospects are worth more than a rental. Unless we are talking about a C.C. rental! I am guessing we could make that deal. Specially since Beltre is off to a slow start.
Side bar. Did Glaus know he was hurt and made sure the Cards picked up his option before he announced it? Just wondering.
I think
the Cards required him to pick up his player option.

my thoughts
holliday can be had by the trade deadline, but equivalent value of 2 top 40 draft picks at least. maybe holliday doesnt fit the cards needs as an OF but his decline is exaggerated but he had 1 bad month…900+ ops in may
that said, the cards strength in prospects is similar to A’s OFs and pitchers..Rasmus/Wallace/Jones/Garcia/Todd/Perez pool …wallace/rasmus off limits, jones A’s have similar young OFs with decent upside sweeney/cunningham/buck/brown etc. A’s s are looking for an mlb ready 3b…maybe a lesser deal for freese/craig works
I am not in favor of getting Holliday
but he gets you back those 2 top 40-ish draft picks too. I mean, even the Cardinals wouldn’t be crazy enough to not offer him arbitration.
