he is laboring a bit here

I bet this is it for him.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

in what way?

4B - beer baseball bands blog
"OOHHHHH!!!! He knocked out the I in Big Mac Land!!"

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 25, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

by not signing any legitimate depth

and relying too heavily on options from within, none of which have been that good (except for the bullpen).

Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!

by Cuttah on May 25, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

our pitching in general will be fine if carp stays healthy

good to have him back, but we were able to not do too horribly without him. I guess they coulda tried to do something about Glaus, but it seemed like we had a ton of options at 3B…. then Ludwick and to a much lesser extent Ank getting hurt was hard to work around, except the one thing that did tick me off about mozeliak is the barton trade, he woulda been nice to have. but mather getting injured too is another limitation

4B - beer baseball bands blog
"OOHHHHH!!!! He knocked out the I in Big Mac Land!!"

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 25, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

that's the point though

he didn’t sign any legitimate depth. He just crossed his fingers and hoped he could fill holes with options from within or career minor leaguers.

Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!

by Cuttah on May 25, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

With Duncan getting out almost all the time, because he can’t hit an off-speed pitch, we need someone who can actually get a hit occasionally. Hell, put Ryan first and Schumaker 4th. Even that would be better than what we are seeing from the 4-spot right now. Hopefully Ludwick will come back and keep his good season going. He will be a HUGE lift for this club if he can produce!

Loading up the bases would have been the perfect thing to do at the end of that game. That gives us a fresh pitcher, a lefty-lefty matchup, and a force out anywhere. That was a really stupid decision Tony La! Play it by the books when it makes sense. I really want to hear the explanation for that and why Skip was out of position for Counsel when he broke up the perfecto. This loss was horrible!

yeah pretty tired of them too

also annoyed that i’ve spent ~ 5 hours today watching two games (today and last night) where we pitched brilliantly and yet couldn’t lay a bat on a ball. Absolutely dreadful. It’s not so much the fact we’ve been near shut-out for the majority of games in the last fortnight, it’s the complete ineptitude and over-matched-ness of so many of our hitters. There’s at least 3 or 4 guys in our lineup, regularly, who are wayyyy below average MLB hitters, and when your defense is poor as well, that’s putting way too much onus on the pitching to win games.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

that really pisses me off. if they win, it’s either a non story or it’s one of the lesser stories down the side of the page. but almost every damn time they lose to a rival, especially like they lost today, they are the lead story. now i know because of the pitching today it’s probably the biggest story in baseball. but i check that site every night & the only other time the Cards are the lead story is when they beat chicago. and even then it’s not a guarantee they’ll be the lead. i probably should not care, but i do. damn inferiority complex.

I never look at their web page and very rarely read the physical paper,

but I do remember that they did a very positive profile of Pujols at the start of the season. Of course, it seemed like just about everyone did a very positive profile of Pujols at the start of the season; I think after the A-Rod scandal there was even more of an interest in highlighting an elite player who hadn’t been connected with anything unseemly.
But the upshot is you’re right – you shouldn’t care. We know where we’re at: Carp’s back, our pitching looks surprisingly solid (which might be a mirage), we can’t seem to hit our way out of a wet paper bag (which hopefully is an injury-induced mirage), and we still have the best player on the planet wearing the birds on the bat. Any slights from the media, whether real or perceived, won’t change that (remember “Tigers in three”?…heh heh…).

If we had the Walt Jocketty of 5-10 years ago

We’d be flipping some marginal prospects for DeRosa right now, and probably extending him. Other than Wallace knocking at the door, I wouldn’t be opposed to that (the extending him part, anyways).

I'm going back to New Orleans, to wear that ball and chain

You're probably right.

And it would be okay for this year, and then the extension would get signed, and then DeRosa would do what players in their mid-30s tend to do, and just sort of fall off a cliff. No thanks.

Don’t get me wrong; I wouldn’t mind having DeRosa this season, and if such a move were to happen, I wouldn’t be upset.

If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.
