he is laboring a bit here
I bet this is it for him.
"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. he's only @ 85
he probably expressed displeasure to Tony at being removed after 5 IP/67 pitches last week….
again, no big innings, keeping the pitches below 20 an inning

by not signing any legitimate depth
and relying too heavily on options from within, none of which have been that good (except for the bullpen).
Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!
our pitching in general will be fine if carp stays healthy
good to have him back, but we were able to not do too horribly without him. I guess they coulda tried to do something about Glaus, but it seemed like we had a ton of options at 3B…. then Ludwick and to a much lesser extent Ank getting hurt was hard to work around, except the one thing that did tick me off about mozeliak is the barton trade, he woulda been nice to have. but mather getting injured too is another limitation

I agree
With Duncan getting out almost all the time, because he can’t hit an off-speed pitch, we need someone who can actually get a hit occasionally. Hell, put Ryan first and Schumaker 4th. Even that would be better than what we are seeing from the 4-spot right now. Hopefully Ludwick will come back and keep his good season going. He will be a HUGE lift for this club if he can produce!

Loading up the bases would have been the perfect thing to do at the end of that game. That gives us a fresh pitcher, a lefty-lefty matchup, and a force out anywhere. That was a really stupid decision Tony La! Play it by the books when it makes sense. yeah pretty tired of them too
also annoyed that i’ve spent ~ 5 hours today watching two games (today and last night) where we pitched brilliantly and yet couldn’t lay a bat on a ball. Absolutely dreadful. It’s not so much the fact we’ve been near shut-out for the majority of games in the last fortnight, it’s the complete ineptitude and over-matched-ness of so many of our hitters. There’s at least 3 or 4 guys in our lineup, regularly, who are wayyyy below average MLB hitters, and when your defense is poor as well, that’s putting way too much onus on the pitching to win games.

If Glaus has a setback I swear to god
My avatar is 3 years into the future for sure...
Wallace isn't good defensively either
TRADE FOR DEROSA!!!
But he is better
than Barden in every aspect of the game

I'm assuming you mean 3B
and I wouldn’t say he’s a train wreck, but he’s not better than Barden
TRADE FOR DEROSA!!!
no you got it right
the fact that Barden is capable of playing SS and 2B makes me think he is much more apt defensively than wallace.
If wallace tried either…trainwreck.
gotta do something
the pitchers can’t keep throwing shut outs. Trade for DeRosa, trade for somebody, anybody, that can goddamn hit. We’ve got a badass pitching staff and one of the all-time greats playing 1st, we should be WINNING.
Just one game
Once Ludwick gets back, we might actually score some runs during Carp’s starts.
It’s really hard for me to get too depressed.
Ludwick isn't THAT good
he’s good, yes. But he’s not going to come in and fix this offense.
TRADE FOR DEROSA!!!
Ryan Ludwick isn't going to make players like
Thurston / Barden / Ryan / Rasmus remember how to hit.
TRADE FOR DEROSA!!!
we're not missing our leader
and waino and lohse are already good pitchers. who’s as good as them on the offensive side? pujols and ludwick.
oh, and glaus
and in other news....
I still don’t like Bill Hall

He ran to first, touched it, and immediately ran into the clubhouse…didn’t untuck his shirt…that was strange…
they only do that when in St. Louis

Just a theory...

The 5 game winning streak masked this teams offensive woes
this is still the same terrible offense that got swept by the Brewers

No runs in 10 innings
We need Ludwick back in the worst way. Agreed on the need for a 3rd baseman as well.
Incredible pitching by Carp
None of the hitters came through. Add a bat, don’t add a bat – not gonna matter if no one can produce
if we add a bat, we'll take ABs away from players that aren't producing aka thusty bardo duncan, hell even rasmus's hitting is pathetic

I must admit I've seen just about enough of Thurston
he’s been replacement-level so far at 3B, and he’s not even been especially unlucky with BABIP or anything. A supposedly competing team should not be coping with a replacement level starter. Craig, Wallace, or DeRosa, I just don’t think we can go on running out 3Bs who are such a drain on our effectiveness.

how often do we lose to the brewers in walk-offs?
didn’t this happen like about 8 times last year? I remember weeks, braun and maybe cameron hitting walk-off dingers, I’m sure there were a few other games late & close we lost… Sick of it.

On the plus side
Carp is healthy. Carp is awesome. If all our pitchers stay healthy, we have one of the best rotations in the national league.
Carp’s a legit #1.
Waino’s an above-average #2.
Lohse is a slightly above-average #3.
Pineiro’s pitching like an above-average #4 (not holding my breath)
Wellemeyer, even on current form, is about an average #5/.
Lot of talent there.

It's just so unbelievably frustrating...
to be so thoroughly dominated by a team two years in a row, who was marginally better last year and maybe not better at all this year. That isn’t supposed to happen in baseball. I know we’re running a AAA linup out there every day but my god, you’d think we’d sneak one in every now and again. They are 9-1 in their last 10 at Busch, 9 -1. And now this, with no help for the offense until the end of the week.
and that help is only one player
and he isn’t exactly ARod.

you know what the most depressing part is?
this game was scheduled to last until 5:05, local time. that’s still 15 minutes away. its just rude to screw up somebody’s schedule.
It's going to get ugly around here tomorrow...
if Waino pitches well and we get shut down by the great Jeff Suppan again. I don’t even want to think about it, especially with 3 lefties coming in the following 4 games. Sigh…
V, b.
ugh. Lefties.
At least that might mean we get a few days off from Joe Thurston.

So frustrating
Carp is wonderful but the offense totally sucks, Pujols tried to do too much and we lose on an error (oops, because of an error).
Glad I went ahead and went out to mow the yard after the ninth. I shoulda just kept watching the Land of the Lost marathon.
I want Wallace once Ludwick get back. Put the kid in the 4 slot and Luds 5th (RLR) and let's get some damn runs.
"Rasmus doesn't hit lefties. Instead he bashes them over the head with their own bleeding arm he just raced to the mound to rip off before the ball arrives to the plate. He then smashes that baseball with the pitchers bloody arm over the wall because he does not hit lefites he bashes them." Ted Lilly
Just came back from a Redbirds game
I don’t think he’s ready yet. He’s got a hell of a bat, but isn’t all that great at identifying pitches just yet. Full report later this week.

Yep
after mashing right after his call up, he’s hit a slump and has like 1 or 2 hits in like 20 at bats.
TRADE FOR DEROSA!!!
Well then if he makes an adjustment and goes on another tear then maybe he will prove he can hit anywhere.

he's got 34 ABs in AAA
and hits. you tellin me he was 11 for his first 14?
he was 0-4 yesterday and 1-4 today and he’s .342/.366/.447 in 9 games. pretty good and he hasn’t had enough time in AAA to have a slump of those proportions
If that's his line...
Then he definitely should not be called up.
This team needs a well rounded hitter. Not yet another all or nothing, never talk a walk guy. That line looks like he’s taken 1 walk (or maybe 2) in 9 games. Not terrible compared to some of the players now in the majors for the Cardinals, but not very good, either.
well, in springfield
he was on base at a .403 clip with .395 for the season in 166 ABs
i’d rather go off his overall 2009 clip of .295/.395/.440
just wanted to point out that there’s no way he’s 1 for his last 20
Ryan Dempster has crashed back to earth this season
I couldn’t be happier.

Speaking of game graphs, this is what one looks like for a game in which neither team has a serious chance of scoring for about nine innings. Then in the tenth inning it gets sad.

Doesn't Tampa Bay have Reid Brignac? I would think that would be the way to go unstead of taking a known headcase who can't beat out Ryan/TGreene/Barden for the starting SS position. Hell we already sent them Izzy and Kennedy that would just be cruel.

ever notice the Cards are only the lead story on USAToday.com when the lose?
that really pisses me off. if they win, it’s either a non story or it’s one of the lesser stories down the side of the page. but almost every damn time they lose to a rival, especially like they lost today, they are the lead story. now i know because of the pitching today it’s probably the biggest story in baseball. but i check that site every night & the only other time the Cards are the lead story is when they beat chicago. and even then it’s not a guarantee they’ll be the lead. i probably should not care, but i do. damn inferiority complex.
It kind of sounds like he’s [Duncan] just running around like a puppy out there – full speed ahead in random directions. – BTown Birds Fan
I never look at their web page and very rarely read the physical paper,
but I do remember that they did a very positive profile of Pujols at the start of the season. Of course, it seemed like just about everyone did a very positive profile of Pujols at the start of the season; I think after the A-Rod scandal there was even more of an interest in highlighting an elite player who hadn’t been connected with anything unseemly.
But the upshot is you’re right – you shouldn’t care. We know where we’re at: Carp’s back, our pitching looks surprisingly solid (which might be a mirage), we can’t seem to hit our way out of a wet paper bag (which hopefully is an injury-induced mirage), and we still have the best player on the planet wearing the birds on the bat. Any slights from the media, whether real or perceived, won’t change that (remember “Tigers in three”?…heh heh…).

If we had the Walt Jocketty of 5-10 years ago
We’d be flipping some marginal prospects for DeRosa right now, and probably extending him. Other than Wallace knocking at the door, I wouldn’t be opposed to that (the extending him part, anyways).
I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans, to wear that ball and chain
You're probably right.
And it would be okay for this year, and then the extension would get signed, and then DeRosa would do what players in their mid-30s tend to do, and just sort of fall off a cliff. No thanks.
Don’t get me wrong; I wouldn’t mind having DeRosa this season, and if such a move were to happen, I wouldn’t be upset.
