Go Cards! Holiday in England, and a day game
perfect combination. And I’ve got a couple of Westmalle Tripels in the fridge. AND Carp’s on the mound. Lovely.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
Oh I want to try that
Is it good?

for some reason i really don't like that stuff
i like the normal SA, i love me some Bell’s, always been a Blue Moon fan, and was drinking that Shocker stuff yesterday. But the Sam? Just doesn’t work for me.

every team is wearing them
Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!
don't like the red
red just doesn’t work with every team. couldn’t they find a way to have white and blue alternates?
by Expatcardfan on May 25, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah it looks like shit...
they did navy blue for everyone last 4th of July, and those were bad, too…but not this bad. These red ones will be back on the 4th of July and 9/11…
the Brewers could pull off white or blue with the stars and stripes logo pretty easy
and its just kind of confusing at a glance seeing every team with the same hat on

I’m done with the Thurston at 3B experiment. He’s a backup MIF and no better than Miles. At 3B he’s replacement level and that’s that.

by ChicagoRedBird on May 25, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree
it still continues to freak me out though. On that particular throw, I think it was a bad camera angle, because it looked like he was off the bag when he caught it. But the camera just didn’t get there in time, and I think he had already caught it and come off the bag. But still.

I didn't get a chance to check the scores last night
so the Fathers swept the Cubs…..that’s awesome. And can I just say, I can’t help but smile when I read things like this…..
The Cubs didn’t even score seven runs total on their entire road trip. Their offense disappeared during an 0-6 trip, scoring only five runs total. They lost their season-high seventh straight and tumbled to .500. It’s their longest losing streak since May 2006, when they lost eight straight.

if Carp had stayed healthy
is there any doubt he could’ve been a HOFer?
Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!
wasn't too good with the bluejays
he has the talent but the first ~5 years of his career weren’t HOF-worthy. I think it’s debatable.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
by Felonius_Monk on May 25, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions
if he can keep healthy for a few more seasons
he might be a HOFer yet—certainly pitching at Cy Young level so far….
Don't think so
he’s only had about 3, maybe 4, seasons when he’s been in the top 4 or 5 pitchers in his league. I’d say at least 8 or 9 such seasons is usually the benchmark to be even considered.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
by Felonius_Monk on May 25, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Koufax only had six.....
just saying….Carp isn’t done yet…..if we can get a few more years of him being able to pitch like this I think he’d have to be considered. Especially if he wins another Cy….
and
it’s probably the case that a higher % of pitchers than you think might be HOF-worthy given the caveat “IF they stayed consistently healthy”. Pitching’s a dangerous (injury-wise) profession, and all the guys in the hall have been UNUSUALLY healthy compared to the mean their entire careers. I’d argue that being durable is perhaps of more importance to HOF eligibility than being good (for instance, there’s occasional (obviously clueless) suggestions that guys like Jamie Moyer might have a hope).

If
and it’s still an “if”, he’s a + defensive shortstop, he really doesn’t have to hit very much to have some value. If he can just maintain a ~.330-ish OBP, even with his total lack of power, he might be just about a league average player. That’d be sweet. Lots of “ifs” there, though. I wonder if maybe T Greene (similar fielder, similar craptastic bat, a bit more extra-base pop) might be a better bet, going forward.

Dear offense
please make Gallardo throw atleast 20 pitches this inning
Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!
I've often wondered
if a good contact hitter like Molina could just go up in the first inning of a baseball game and try to foul off every single pitch; just take half-speedish swings and try to run up the pitch count of a really good pitcher, try to get them out early. No idea if that’s even feasible (i.e. if any hitter could conceivably do that) and whether it’s worth giving up an out for, say, a 20 pitch AB, in the first inning against (say) Lincecum or Greinke or someone…

Weird...
I am tracking via ESPN.com’s Gameday, and for some reason Milwaukee’s chances of winning just jumped from 53% to 60%. Wonder why?
Lou Brock loves Lamp.
They have more outs left than we do.
by notmorganfreeman on May 25, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions
OK, that would make sense, but that still seems like a steep jump...
Down to 57% when Thurston reached, but now up to 61% again. That just seems high in a game where they haven’t… you know… um… really merited much applause?
Lou Brock loves Lamp.
It's based on the statistical likelihood of future success, not current performance.

… and not teams with no hits in a 0-0 game at this point?

The same bs that cost carp in his first game!
unbelievable
"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."
I gotta agree with Al for once
with APu’s range, why have Skip that far to the left?

I don't fucking understand TLR sometimes
Albert Pujols has notoriously great range to his right, and yet you still position Schu in the hole right there? Terrible

If healthy
is there a better pitcher in baseball than Carp? I guess Santana maybe and possibly Greinke. But I can’t think of any others.

Lincecum

Carp is better than Lincecum
Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!
He has more of a track record(Carp)
But i think at the end of it all Lincecum will be the better pitcher

because of health
you’re right, Lincecum will go down with better #’s. But a healthy Carpenter is better than a healthy Lincecum in my opinion
Passion Pit, F*** Yeah!
Halladay?
Santana, maybe. Greinke—I’d rather see the guy be that good for a longer stretch than just the badass month and a half he’s had before I’d be willing to say he’s better than Carp….
Including last season it's more like three months, but point taken

when that curve has a foot and a half break on it
and it’s dropping thru the zone with two strikes already you have to swing at it….you can’t possibly make hard contact with it, and very few batters will have the balls to watch it and hope that it drops below their knees, because half the time it won’t and it’ll be a backwards K.
That’s just vicious….

Gallardo has never...
had even an average Prior start.
His pitch count is high today but he hasn’t labored at all
at a certain point, do pitch counts almost just go out the window?
i mean, guys can throw 130 – 140 if they’re fastball guys, and you just have to. plus, its not like he’s thrown a couple of 40 pitch innings or something. consistently throwing in the teens.

ridiculous game so far
is this the best pitched game so far in the majors this season?
no
because only one pitcher is facing a major league quality lineup. Gallardo is carving up the Memphis Redbirds featuring Albert Pujols

that's kinda true
mind you, we’re really only missing ludwick and glaus, which doesn’t bode too well for the rest of the year…

Although if Luddy is in the lineup
i bet Apu doesnt get that in the dirt because he doesnt want to walk Pujols to give Ludwick the chance for a single up the middle to win it
