perfect combination. And I’ve got a couple of Westmalle Tripels in the fridge. AND Carp’s on the mound. Lovely.

Don't think so

he’s only had about 3, maybe 4, seasons when he’s been in the top 4 or 5 pitchers in his league. I’d say at least 8 or 9 such seasons is usually the benchmark to be even considered.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

Koufax only had six.....

just saying….Carp isn’t done yet…..if we can get a few more years of him being able to pitch like this I think he’d have to be considered. Especially if he wins another Cy….

by nota bene on May 25, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

and

it’s probably the case that a higher % of pitchers than you think might be HOF-worthy given the caveat “IF they stayed consistently healthy”. Pitching’s a dangerous (injury-wise) profession, and all the guys in the hall have been UNUSUALLY healthy compared to the mean their entire careers. I’d argue that being durable is perhaps of more importance to HOF eligibility than being good (for instance, there’s occasional (obviously clueless) suggestions that guys like Jamie Moyer might have a hope).

If

and it’s still an “if”, he’s a + defensive shortstop, he really doesn’t have to hit very much to have some value. If he can just maintain a ~.330-ish OBP, even with his total lack of power, he might be just about a league average player. That’d be sweet. Lots of “ifs” there, though. I wonder if maybe T Greene (similar fielder, similar craptastic bat, a bit more extra-base pop) might be a better bet, going forward.

Seriously, though, from the inception of UZR (when he was 32 years old, he’s now pushing 40) he’s like +10 at SS, +13 at 2B and +20 (nearly) at 3B. Imagine how well he’d have rated when he was younger.

I've often wondered

if a good contact hitter like Molina could just go up in the first inning of a baseball game and try to foul off every single pitch; just take half-speedish swings and try to run up the pitch count of a really good pitcher, try to get them out early. No idea if that’s even feasible (i.e. if any hitter could conceivably do that) and whether it’s worth giving up an out for, say, a 20 pitch AB, in the first inning against (say) Lincecum or Greinke or someone…

Something interesting about Carp

Anybody remember how he gave up dip when rehabbing from the oblique? I wonder if he more focused and sharper now that he doesn’t have the tobacco habit? I know when I gave up smoking a few years back, my mind sharpened up a bit after my blood sugar returned to normal.

Down to 57% when Thurston reached, but now up to 61% again. That just seems high in a game where they haven’t… you know… um… really merited much applause?

ridiculous game so far

is this the best pitched game so far in the majors this season?

by GCSing on May 25, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

no

because only one pitcher is facing a major league quality lineup. Gallardo is carving up the Memphis Redbirds featuring Albert Pujols

that's kinda true

mind you, we’re really only missing ludwick and glaus, which doesn’t bode too well for the rest of the year…

Although if Luddy is in the lineup

i bet Apu doesnt get that in the dirt because he doesnt want to walk Pujols to give Ludwick the chance for a single up the middle to win it

best i've seen

both pitchers utterly unhittable so far. I have a bad feeling we’re gonna lose though, seem to be struggling on this sort of game lately….

He made up hus mind he was swinging...

before that was was ever delivered. He wasn’t going to watch Duncan fail again…

thing is

the way dunc’s swinging the bat, hard to blame albert for taking some hacks…

exactly

I don’t blame him. He knows Duncan will fail behind him, so you have to try and do it yourself

and why did we need to do that in the 8th inning

rather than the start of the game. I think that would’ve been more appropriate.
