Game 42 Overflow
It has to be great to come out of the bullpen and be able to think to yourself, "You know what? I think I'll just throw the fastball."

i know the sample size is smaller
but tyler greene has a higher batting average than colby….would not have put any moneyon that
Colby is still looking for his groove
first he wasn’t hitting the ball with authority. now he is hitting it with authority, but getting under it too much. Once he starts hitting line drives, he’ll rake.
oh i know
my comment was more of a where the hell is this tyler greene stuff coming from

I don't give a whole lot of credence to SotG usually
but man, Motte really deserves this one. Or the game ball. Or a hug. Something.

Cardinals pitching has now given up 2 runs in 4 games
Only 1 by a starting pitcher (on a seeing eye single)
and the cardinals pitching staff
continues it’s ali-like smackdown of opposing lineups.

Masterful pitching
really is fun to watch. And how about this bullpen? I’d wager they are at or near the top of the league in many categories.

on both “serious number” and “you know? it really is, Al.” tonight. Please, someone volunteer to build a VEB glossary or something and spare us the difficulty of explaining “dong-jackery” to someone.

wow
I always have the pleasure of listening to it on the radio. I had no idea the horror that is the TV commercial.

is it bad
that one of the moments that I remember clearly from being at the Joel 3-hitter was the Serious Number commerical being on the jumbo-tron? “See hunny, that’s why I wanted to make a cardboard and aluminum giant 6 necklace for the game, and you wouldn’t let me”
at least we're spared the 6-rap commercial. Ugh

..what was Welle doing differently?
Not allowing 14 runs in the first inning...
Although throwing strikes probably also helped, though less directly.

Just watched the tiny little embedded highlight of Motte's inning ending K at MLB audio
It was cool to see everyone in the dugout so pumped about those K’s, especially Welley. If we can get Motte, Perez, and McClellan all going, that is a tough, tough bullpen.
If my numbers are correct, after tonight those three cumulatively have an ERA of 2.92, a WHIP of 1.30, a BAA of .198, and a K/9 of 8.4. The walks are obviously an issue – 5.5/9 IP – but when they’re in the strike zone they’re pretty mean.

Zambrano can't make it out of the 5th
and Heilman can’t hold the runners….3-0 Fathers, two guys on still, 1 of them is Zambrano’s
I just saw in that box score:
“SAN DIEGO SECOND BASEMAN DAVID ECKSTEIN LEFT THE GAME IN THE TOP OF THE SECOND INNING DUE TO A CHEST CONTUSION”
WTF? He was hit by Z in the first inning, but he left in the second inning. I don’t know if that means he tried to keep playing after the HBP but couldn’t, or he took a line drive off his chest the next inning, or what the hell is going on. But I do know that “chest contusion” doesn’t sound very pleasant.
by BTown Birds fan on May 22, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions
they gave Zambrano an error
it says it’s a pickoff error. WTH is that? usually it’d go down as a throwing error.
….as it turns out, the Eck HBP was the very next thing that happened after Z threw wild to first. Yikes….
BBT just showed the HBP. Looked kinda bad.
He was squaring to bunt. But they didn’t mention anything about him being hit from a pick off attempt.

In 42 starts, our starting pitchers are 19-12
with no one under .500, which means our bullpen is still sporting a 6-5 record. How does this compare to last year after 42 games? Anyone? Anyone?
There was Gibson in the Reds' dugout, visibly manhandling about three Reds and tossing them bodily out of the dugout and onto the field...He was the toughest athlete mentally I ever saw, and the greatest competitor. JACK BUCK

Research Time!
So I was bored and figured I’d help ya out…
08 Starter W-L: 18-9
08 Reliever W-L: 7-8
Oddly enough, Wellemeyer won the 42nd game of the season last year, also. Thought that was neat.
We also already have 1 more CG than the 1st 42 games last year.
Anyone else notice that LaRue seems to work better with some of our pitchers
Just seems like Motte, Perez, and Welly all do better when he catches.
