TLR's lineup tinkering
While a big supporter of TLR and an advocate that his leadership in creating a great culture with this team (playing hard, playing to win each game) is underrated, I sometimes wonder what would happen if he consistently put guys in the same area in the lineup so they could get a feel for their role for an extended period of time. It seems that Rasmus' hot streak with the long ball started after he was moved down in the order, which I believe has been discussed. Hitting in the 2 hole he seemed to be trying to draw the walk, while hitting down in the order he seems to be trying to drive in runs and hence, the power numbers have increased.
I still for the most part like the way TLR tries to gain every advantage for that day's game by putting out the lineup he feels is best suited to win that day. However, constantly moving guys up and down the lineup is sometimes frustrating. I wonder how frustrating it is for the players and how it effects their approach to each game.
Finally, although Molina in the 2 hole has been proposed and shot down numerous times due to the double play issue, I think most DP's Pujols hits into are hit so hard that Vince Coleman would be thrown out on the majority of them. He has the best OBP outside of Pujols and has good bat control. Why not just try him there?

Bizarro world
I like how you used OBP and ‘bat control’ in the same argument.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.

not mutually exclusive?
I see what you mean and kind of agree but OBP and contact hitting/bat control/co-ordination/whatever you call it are not mutually exclusive. I don’t see the logical disconnect there.

I'd like to see a little more regularity with the lineups

When is Tony going to realize that lineups and matchups don't really matter

I've been an advocate of Molina in the 2 hole before
at least vs LHP. I think there’s players with better OBP vs righties who’re more suitable there (I’d probably always stick colby there vs righties) but there’s some merit to the idea, I think. He’s one of the better RHB with no power. That said, the “ideal” (statistically) lineup construction would probably have Apu in the 2 hole, and Molina down the order; he’s not your classical 2-hole hitter but I think at present, with Ludwick out, Molina at #2 and Rasmus hitting cleanup wouldn’t be the worst move in the world.
As for the lineup shuffling, I think it’s mostly immaterial. Most studies have shown that the effect on lineup order is minimal (the best vs the worst order only differs by just over 2 wins per year, I think I read somewhere, and realistically most orders TLR puts out there are going to be closer to the optimal end than they are to the “least optimal” end of that spectrum).
Also, I don’t necessarily know if hitters have a notably different approach when they’re hitting in different spots. Obviously, sometimes TLR calls for a bunt or a hit&run, which changes their approach, but I reckon that when hitters are swinging they do much the same thing anywhere, as long as the manager makes it clear they’re not under any more “pressure” to hit elevated balls/RBIs in a certain position. To me, it seems crazy that the cubbies have Soriano hitting leadoff when he should really be #4 or #5 in that lineup, but there ya go (also, I’ve felt for a long time that the Indians need to put Grady in the 2-hole; both by the classical logic AND sabermetrically it’s his ideal slot)…

#2 Hitter
- I don’t move Rasmus right now — he’s beginning to hit and he’s shown great on base ability. Leave him in front of Pujols as much as possible.
- The real issue with the lineup is that we don’t have anyone to lead off against left handed pitching. Ryan is not a leadoff hitter, neither is Barden. I would actually be ok with Molina and his .360 OBP leading off against lefties, even though his speed is obviously not that of a leadoff hitter.

Really, I like the different lineups
with the exception of the pitcher batting 8th. I know it hasn’t happened very often this season, but it’s time that TLR moved on from that stage.

The pitcher batting 8th is actually benefitial to scoring runs over the long haul
And you can’t seriously like Tony’s lineups. He regularly bats the worst hitter second, which is a big no-no.

I don't mind his lineups
but his slavish devotion to absolutely meaningless tiny sample size matchups is what really annoys me. Oh, Brendan Ryan’s 4-for-7 lifetime against Ted Lilly, so we’d better start him ahead of a better hitter who’s 2-for-12…
