Shane Robinson
Hola Birdos! Como estas frijole? Just wanted to ask the Cards fans about Shane Robinson's recent big-league stint. I know he got a couple starts over the past week. Just wondering about folks' take on the different fascets of his game: hitting, patience, speed, range, arm, etc. Two questions in particular: 1) Does he have the speed to hit at the top of a big-league batting order? 2) Is he ticketed for CF, RF, or does he project as a versatile Randy Winn-type defender?

He definitely
has the speed.
Classic underachiever.

His Batting Average was .240. His OBP was .231. He didn’t walk at all in 26 trips to the plate. He only struck out twice, but that’s because he never got into deep counts. He needs to be more patient and learn to stop swinging. Until he is no longer a black hole in a lineup, he won’t play on a big league team. Other than that, he does have speed, but if you can’t get on base, you’re not going to hit higher than 7th. He only got 6 chances in the big leagues, so I can’t comment on his range, arm, etc. But if he doesn’t develop any pop in his bat, he will have to be a CF, and a dang good one, to even have a chance at a big league team. Corner OF is reserved for the bats.

Taguchi had well timed pop at least

Eventually
the Cardinals won’t carry six middle infielders. Shane would be a fine fifth outfielder—pinch runner guy. I don’t know that his defense will be So in his prime (which we caught the end of) but he’s an offensive asset that we’ll get some production out of in his cost-controlled years.
Guys like Bradley are exactly why we can't have a pumpkin patch anymore.

I wouldn't call him an offensive asset
he hasn’t really hit until AA last year, and he is very batting average dependent.

eventuallly?
do you have any idea how long Tony is sticking around? i wouldn’t put it pasted him to run the team for another 5+ years
It kind of sounds like he’s [Duncan] just running around like a puppy out there – full speed ahead in random directions. – BTown Birds Fan

I hope he is here that long.

He won't be anything great
but he does have good speed. He should probably stick to CF much like Rasmus, but he could be a decent RF. He did pretty good, I thought, but I can’t really tell b/c he didn’t play all that often.
Welcome to Baseball Heaven.

Reserve Outfielder
is probably his role with the Cards. If they did not have Rasmus he might have a shot at the CF spot but it is doubtful that he starts in LF or RF. I think he is an excellent bench guy but the Cards have a surplus of infielders and they are one bench player short right now – no place now but maybe in the future he becomes the reserve outfielder / pinch hitter / defensive replacement.

AAA Legend
He’s fast and presumably plays a respectable outfield, but that’s about it. He’s got a little bit of pop for a guy who could pass as a Keebler Elf, but he’s not playing in a league that plays games inside of a big cookie-making tree. He’s not patient enough to hit at the top of any ML batting order (I mean ZERO walks? Juan Pierre walks by accident sometimes!). I really don’t see this guy having the skills, beyond plus speed, to make it in the show. He tries really hard though, so somebody over at the PD boards probably thinks he’s going to be irreplaceable someday. I see him turning into an OF playing Bo Hart, unless he turns himself into a walk machine and then he becomes Reggie Willits.

I sort of agree
but at this place in time we could argue the same for Shane Robinson. There’s really no way of knowing. I just wouldn’t list him as very good.
Maybe good with the potential of being very good. But he needs to prove himself before I’d feel comfortable having him as a starter (like Shane Robinson).

I never said he wasn't
He’s just VERY limited. If Robinson turned into an on-base machine, he’d be a player similar to Willits. A guy with a remarkable batting eye and ZERO power.
However…
Things that are more likely than Robinson turning into an on-base machine:
1. SoonerfanTU saying “La Russa made a bad decision and I want him fired.”
2. the red baron keeping one of his posts under 900,000 words.
3. Eva Longoria leaving her basketball playing husband for redbirdnation8206
4. Pam Beesly (not Jenna Fischer, just Pam) leaving Jim Halpert for redbirdnation8206
5. Eva Longoria and Pam Beesly agreeing to be co-girlfriends of redbirdnation8206
6. Jeff Weaver pitching the clinching game of a World Series
7. Skip Bayless or Steve Phillips being right.
8. Adam Dunn liking baseball.
9. Tony La Russa inviting Michael Vick over for dinner.
10. redbirdnation8206’s wife allowing Pam Beesly and Eva Longoria to be his girlfriends.
11. People laughing at this horrible attempt at comedy.

He's Kerry Robinson

He hit that walk off bomb...
…against Chicago in 2003. I loved how in 3 Nights in August, Bissinger argued that Robinson thought he could be like Juan Pierre, and made it sound like that was a good thing. Although I guess that book was written when Pierre was still getting on base a little bit. Anyway, I always found that humorous.

he's a little fella'
i was fortunate enough to have really good seats to the game last saturday (b/c of the seats, not the game since it was so slow), and skip schumaker made this guy looks small. he’s listed at 5’9", but that is stretching it.
