he was close

his defense was amazing (13.1 UZR), so he was about a league average player overall. That’s worth about 9 million. He got like 10 last year, so he was pretty much worth it.

it doesn't matter when the run was scored

he left with the lead, that lead was never given up thus he gets the W. It is a bit confusing till you just remember it doesn’t matter when a run is scored just when a lead changes or a tie happens.

if the team has the lead when he leaves the game (provided hes pitched at least 5 innings)

then it doesnt matter how many times the other team or the cardinals score as long as they maintain the lead. The game could have ended up 10-9 and he would have still gotten the lead as long as the cubs didn’t tie it up

Someone like Boggs for instance, will be a solid/cheap pitcher for years to come, an absolute necessity for the team in the coming years.

per Fangraphs, Duncan was our top batter by WPA (.098), followed by Pujols (.095) and Khalil (.027).

Carp was .289, KMac .179. The other pitchers were all positive.
