Am I forgetting anyone? Is there any other info or stats you'd like to have included? For the sake of easiness....minor league FA that never played for the Cardinals will not be included, but players drafted by the Cardinals but currently with another organization will be. So that means no Edgar Gonzalez or Jolbert Cabrera, but Mike McCoy and Reid Gorecki will remain on the tracker.

payback is a bitch...
thats the way i’ve always looked at it….they basically gave us McGwire, Stottlemyre, and Eckersley for free. This was their revenge.

has anyone noticed that kiko calero is pitching great (again) with the Marlins, and could be in their closer mix soon? He’s been a pretty effective major league reliever for someone who flies almost entirely under the radar…

looking at his stuff on his pitch f/x page on fangraphs, he’s down to 88 on his fastball, his cutter and sinker are crud and while he has a good change up, he throws is 40% of the time. i have to think after a while batters would just let it go by and wait for him to throw the other sludge he has.

the only two guys that ladunc wanted to save, if memory serves, were haren and springer. the only other guy that you would have liked to keep was polanco, but that was a good trade —cant get something for nothing. I cant remember, did ladunc want Weaver back or were they indifferent?

love it
i have been obsessively checking adam kennedy’s minor league stats this season, which to many people might seem like a ridiculous exercise. but thankfully i now know that i’m not alone in my pursuits. thanks for putting this list together. would be great to have a monthly report like that, whether for purposes of mere curiosity or, more likely, for purposes of self-schadenfreude and the low-degree masochism that is inherent in looking at danny haren’s cy young award-style k:bb ratio.

one big “what if” I’ve always had is “what if Wilson had been SS on that 2004 team”. he was 2+ wins better than renteria that year, and just might have made the difference in the playoffs/WS.

More needs to be made about the J.D. Drew deal
The Barton-for-Boyer was the absolute least we could do for the Braves. We got a couple of great set-up years from Ray King, a couple serviceable years from Marquis…oh, and some kid named Wainwright in exchange for an OF who would demand top-tier salaries for years to come.

Right
which left a huge hole in the outfield in the form of Larry Walker (who was also under contract for 2005 as well). JD was, of course, in his walk year of his contract. Signed a ridiculous contract the next year to play 72 games for the Dodgers. Ray King appeared in 77 for the Cards as a set-up guy.
Now, 5 years later, we enjoy Wainwright as a direct result of the trade. Atlanta has memories of a first-round exit in the 2004 NLDS. Sounds like a pretty good deal for the Cards.

It's really a no-win trade.
I don’t remember Atlanta needing either King or Marquis, and Wainwright was just a prospect at the time for a team that was in win now mode. They got a 9 WAR player for a reliever, a starter who had fallen out of favor, and a prospect. They got what they wanted and we got what we wanted.

The prospect had fallen out of favor as well
I don’t remember the entire story nor do I have all the stats in front of me but if memory servers me correctly Wainwright was starting to struggle and there were people suggesting he would never last as a starter, etc. I think it was easy for them to part with him.

Burger King was good for one year
He was absolutely flame-broiled in the 2nd half of 2005, giving up inherited runners left & right. I think he allowed more runs to score (not to be confused with earned runs) than he registered outs. (If it wasn’t more, it was pretty close. I did some research on it, but I don’t have access to it right now.)

by mattybobo on May 5, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions 4 recs
I agree
The trade as a whole was great. We received a solid year from Marquis (plus numerous headaches afterwards), 1.5 solid years from King, a #2 starter in Wainwright, payroll flexibility to sign Suppan & Sanders, and got rid of two players that, while certainly productive, were both in Tony’s doghouse.
In closing, I must commend your good use of BK marketing jargon.

by Solanus on May 5, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
the payroll is not insignificant...
… sanders was coming off of a 131 OPS+ year in 2003, which was basically the same as Drew’s 132 OPS+ in 2003. Drew had a career year in 2004, but he’d been oft-injured (only 100 games in ‘03) and didn’t have many defenders in the clubhouse. plus we got Suppan cheap, so basically got ourselves nearly 400 innings of above-average starting pitching, a solid LOOGY, an average OFer, and a top-rated prospect for one year of Drew.
pretty savvy series of moves, especially given the troubles we had in the rotation in ’03, and the uncertainty surrounding Carp at the time.

Hector Luna
was always a guy I thought might amount to a nearly-league-average player. If I recall, though, we traded him for Belliard in ‘06 so can’t really complain about that (even if Belliard did suck when he was here)!…
And who’d have thought, midway through last year, that the Rolen-Glaus masterstroke from Mo might end up being a win for the BlueJays. Glaus was worth 5 wins last year alone, with Rolen only worth 3, but it looks like Rolen’s going to be worth at least the same this year (more likely more, if he stays healthy) and Glaus looks like he might not swing a bat in earnest. Shame.

On the bright side
The current Cardinal platoon at 3B is sporting a .376 wOBA, which is 8 points behind Rolen so far this season. They probably won’t keep this up forever, but I think it’s safe to say they’ve been competitive so far.

I’d still like to see a “proper” 3B on the roster, though. Barden and Thursty both deserve to be there but, given our depth at the position and the fact that both Craig and Freese need ABs at AAA, it seems ridiculous one of them isn’t there. And given that Craig can play LF and we’re now short of OFers after Rick’s mishap, it seems an absolute no-brainer.
And, as you say, there is no way in hell that Barden and Thurston can keep up that pace. I’m guessing that we can make a 2-win 3B out of them as a platoon, maybe even a bit more (given they’re both + defenders), but they’re definitely going to lag behind what Glaus, Rolen (or even, if they hit their projections, likely Craig or Freese) can do.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
