Too soon

His defense is still rough and I don’t think moving him up against more advanced pitchers is the right move at this time. Move Craig back to third and bring up Daryl Jones.

Tony said that Skip was a 7 at 2nd base (as a fielder presumably)

and Skip self-evaluated as a 5. Oquendo said he was better than a 5 but not quite a 7.

Al and Dan cleverly deduced that this implied he was a 6. Unfortunately for them, the scale was rational numbers not necessarily integers, thus there are an infinite number of points that Oquendo could have been refering too.

Waino update

7.0IP
91 pitches/59 strikes
2H, 1R, 1BB, 5K and the one solo HR

A beautiful thing. We badly needed the starting pitching to get itself straightened out again. If we go down in order here I suspect he’s gonna pitch the 8th.

I think Tony is trying to confuse Soup. Which Green does he pitch to ?

The one at the plate or the one on the bench?

Hopefully in between and we get a man on base.

yeah

that has to be one of my least favorite sayings about failure in baseball. You show me one guy who isn’t a pitcher that is in the HOF that failed 7 out of 10 times. I know when people say that, they are talking solely about getting a hit, but there are so many more things that could happen at the plate that wouldn’t be considered failing. Its like when they say that, a walk is considered a failure.

"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum

by scoot on May 16, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

not really

They are talking about average. So walks don’t count as either a failure or a success.

by Evilfrog on May 17, 2009 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

did a lot of base clogging, too

sometimes a guy like that is willing to take a walk when we need an RBI. He needs to learn to handle the bat a bit better before he can be considered a professional hitter.

I love the jinx mentality

especially on a site where a lot of weight is given to numbers and percentages. The chance for failure is higher so I guess it’s just easier to blame it on something. Like the whole talking about a No-No thing. Every time I pitched, if I had even as much as 1 inning of no hits, I would say I had a no-no going, including my one career no-no(against a horrible team in high school).

something missing from today’s sports entertainment. Oh yeah, the entertainment part. The Cardinals have become downright boring to watch (except for seeing Adam back in his old form for the most part)

well, there's always the UFC

There are some big UFC fights tonight

I for one, am excited. I originially didn’t like UFC at all, but somehow I’ve come around. Most brute force guys don’t succeed, it’s the well rounded fighters that do the best.

On the bright side

At least Wainwright pitched a good game. I was starting to get worried about him…

by DiscoJer on May 16, 2009 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

why?

I’m not sure why people are so easily rattled when guys with track records slump.

by TheBirds on May 16, 2009 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

because when they are pitchers

and the “slump” consists of losing control, it’s usually a precursor to surgery of some sort…

Does he really have a track record, though?

He’s a fairly young pitcher and has only really had one really good season. 2007 wasn’t bad, but not great, either, at least in his WHIP

by DiscoJer on May 16, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I hate to see him take the loss though after pitching a two-hitter. Wretched Cory Hart!

I don't care for THoffman

but I am glad to see that he is too classy to untuck his shirt. And it is not just today, I noticed that he didn’t participate in the untucking when I watched him close out a Brewer win earlier this season.

by cardsgirl95 on May 16, 2009 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

honest question why does the shrit thing bother you so much?

I mean the Brewers players have explained why they do it over and over it has nothing to do with the other team in any manner or form.

It is a simple and silly celebration over winning a game.

I guess that is the problem most Brewers fans have understanding all this anger over untucking a shirt.

I think the Cards bad run against the Crew in the last season or so has more to do with the dislike than the actually act itself. Face it for the longest time your team had been able to use the Brewers as a doormat they usually kicked our asses on a regular basis. Now that the Brewers have made the series competitive all of a sudden you are all worried about an untucked shirt.

Not to be an ass but if the Cards win they will not have to worry about any untucked shirts

Oh not many of the old guys do it other than Cameron who actually started it. And very few of the pitchers do it so that could explain why Hoffman does not do it. Or it could be that when he is done with his half of an inning his uniform still has its creases and he does not want to ruin how sharp and squared away he looks ;)

Here is to a good and competitive season and the Cubs not winning the division

YEAH! WE WON GAME 36! CELEBRATE!

Serious question: Do they untuck their jerseys after losses? Or do the not deem their nightly effort after losses worthy of untucking status, as they did not put in a full days work (wtf? They’re baseball players!), and shower and go to bed in full uniform, only to untuck and begin the say anew in the morn?

(Only that first question was actually serious.)

exactly

the “explanation” they’ve given is bullshit. They do it to show up their opponents, period. It’s disrespectful, period. The fact that they lie about why they do it just serves to further illustrate their lack of character.

And good on Hoffman, for not caving in to peer pressure.

I recommend you google the word

“sportsmanship”, read up on it a bit, and then reflect on it a while. I don’t care enough what Brewers fans think on this issue to bother trying to convince you that my visceral reaction isn’t correct. Just understand that many of us have a VERY visceral reaction to that type of behavior, and the fact that certain people don’t understand the unwritten etiquettes of sportsmanship does not mean that etiquette doesn’t exist. The level of disgust ranks right about the same as seeing a fry cook not wash his hands.

And the rationale they’ve fabricated to cover their actions is ridiculous. If you believe it, you’re a sucker.

A visceral reaction to a violation of the unwritten etiquette of sportsmanship?

Guys untucking their shirts after a game is over? That’s all about you, not them. And you’ve deduced that without question they fabricated a cover story to try and cover this great crime. Sure.

Guys untucking their shirts after a game is over

On the field.

When not another team in the history of the game, in 130 or so years, has done so as a celebration.

I have no idea why that would come off as disrespectful.

I mean, by breaking the untucking barrier, the Brewers are essentially the Jackie Robinsons of slobby looking celebrations. So congrats on that. We really should appreciate and praise it more. Someday, all MLB teams may very well retire the untucked jersey to commemorate the fact that Mike Cameron’s dad used to make a big deal of the fact that he actually worked for a living when he came home. Fucking historic, that.

Of course, maybe the cards could score a fucking run or two and put this shit to a stop.

thank you

I could never explain this to other people, but I think I’ll use this explanation. I like certain Cardinal losses because there was an improvement or a great play or a good hard nine, and the GOB just didn’t give it to us in the end. That’s hard work, period. If they’re really untucking for that reason, then they should untuck every night.

Just a downcycle

Glaus, Carpenter, Ankiel, Ludwick, Freese, Ryan on DL and Pujols in a slump. They’ll get better as soon as a few of the big guns get back. At least Adam had a good game and for all of those who wanted to see the minor leaguers, they’re all on the roster. Cards need one more arm in rotation via trade and get healthy and they will compete.

Just win

This isn't frustrating because we were shut out

it’s frustrating because we were shut out AND had a lead stolen from us yesterday. Sheesh, those two runs would be nice right now.

I really think the MLB needs to rethink it’s postponement rule. And believe me, this isn’t just a result of yesterday, I’ve always felt this way. It should be like little league and high school used to play (I chose not to play college, so I’m not sure the rules there) where if it’s before 5 innings, you simply pick up and finish as part of a double-header the next time. I don’t understand why it’s not like that, and I think it’s unfair for players (like Rasmus) who maybe have an important personal success on a day and then it gets swiped away. I’d be shocked if the idea of a pending postponement doesn’t affect the emotions of players during a game and the effort they put in.

On with the (good) youth movement!

Well...

25th in the league in OPS in May (at .681, 30th is the White Sox at .639).

But, interestingly enough, we’re dead last in May in OBP, at .285. I think that’s probably the most important offensive stat. Since if you can’t get on base, you can’t score and it just looks depressing as hell.

The pitching is actually in the middle of the pack in most stats (probably propped up a bit by tonight’s performance, though), and they are 5-8 in May, which is 25th. 5 teams have won only 4 games in May, so that’s something.
