Game 33 Overflow Thread

I really hate losing to the Pirates.  I know in the macro sense of 16 games or whatever we play them, we're bound to drop a few.  But in the micro, on that game-to-game level, we're a better team than they are and I don't like dropping games to teams we're better than.

a strategy question

Sometimes, in cases like this, do you just want your starter to suck it up and eat the innings? I know we just had a day off, but Welley is a veteran pitcher, he’s a #4 quality starter, do you just leave him out there to die a little longer until his pitch count hits its max, or do you start the parade of relievers?

sometimes in games like this, when you know Tony isn’t going to do anything, I wish the player would just charge the mound a little. Not start a fight, just go and have a few heated words with the pitcher.

Gallardo is an ace

probably one of the best 10 pitchers in the league, and Bush, Parra and Looper are okay, and Suppan is replacement level. So their probably a little worse than us. But their offense and defense is sick.

the better question

If you come in with a 6 run lead, and have a manager that has ran your bench completely empty, can you earn the save if , I don’t know , you give up a couple hits and then your LF breaks his leg. You then have to be moved to LF. The next reliever then comes in and gives up three runs. Your wise manager then brings in a reliever that has been used the last three nights and is unavailable, but alas, he brings him in to play LF, and you move back to the mound.

Will you pick up a save in this scenario?

Situations like these

Really make you happy we have middle infielders and a backup catcher on our bench. Oh wait, what?

Oh well

get ’em tomorrow. And Thursday.

i don't like shane but he got good wood right there.

I don’t think I’d consider ADub a better hitter just yet.

I finished my finals today

Yay!

Cardinals lost
BOOO!!!!!!

What a shitty day….

Patiently awaiting the day Colby Rasmus does this: .275/.381/.551/.932, 29HR, in St. Louis...and I'm wanting an Allen Craig call-up!

9th inning is a reminder...

of repeated offensive struggles…

I don’t see Greene starting for awhile, and I don’t see him staying up in the majors when Ryan comes back…

by The_teague on May 12, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

atleast with B.Ryan

you get an above average defender at both 2nd and Short.

Plus

he licks his shoulder.

Classic underachiever.

by spants on May 12, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Greene is probably a better defender than Ryan

His arm is stronger

But I’d say Ryan has the better range.

Where have all the Redbirds gone, long time passing...

Down by six, bases loaded, nobody out in the ninth. We see Tyler Greene, Jason LaRue and Shane Robinson. Ladies and gentlemen, these are your 2009 Saint Louis Cardinals.

Are you thinking that a power-hitter with career longevity

would beget a team of power-hitters with longevity? I don’t think managers work that way.

Wait…what was Larussa’s playing career like?

No

I was thinking that Jack Clark looks like he’s been cooked to medium well under some kind of heating lamp generally reserved for use at chain fast food restaurants.

Maybe I was hoping for a managerial suggestion.

Oh, and Larussa – mediocre middle infielder who was hit in the head with a wild pitch. I can’t see how that has impacted his managerial career.

wtf is the point

of even having a Jake Peavy, if Edwin Moreno is the guy you are going to bring in to fact the heart of the opponent’s order in a one run game after he leaves?

I went to Pittsburgh tonight

and saw the 2005-2007 Memphis Redbirds play.

Duncan
Robinson
Greene
Skippy
Rasmus

Tyler Greene spent more time making sure little kids got autographs, baseballs, etc during the night than Todd Wellemeyer spent getting people out.

by Hardcore Legend on May 12, 2009 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

I know autographs don't win games

but they make lifelong fans. I would be willing to say that I would probably not be as dedicated a fan as I am today if it weren’t for the time that Steve Kline spent signing and encouraging others to sign. Every game he was out there with the other bullpen guys signing autographs for a good hour. Now, rarely do I see players signing when I’m at Busch. I’m a fan of pretty much any player that takes time to sign autographs before or after a game.

Yeah, it's a big deal

Funny you should mention Kliner. I’ve got a signed ticket from him.

Often times, you find the guys that have the biggest struggles in life signing for the kids. Eckstein, So, Kline, Flores, Ludwick, etc.

Ludwick and Skip spent time signing before the game as well, before going out and stretching. I blame those damn kids and their baseball for Ludwick pulling his hamstring.

by Hardcore Legend on May 13, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

So signed a lot too. I have a signed ball. It’s pretty cool, he signed it with the Japanese characters and the english Romanization of “So Taguchi”
