That was a terrible half inning to watch.

Welly? WHAT!?

Bunting is okay, but we’re gonna need more than one run.

Unfortunately

A runner will score just as often at first base with nobody out, as he will score at second with 1 out. And there is always the chance that Welly doesn’t get the bunt down.

giving up a dozen hits, six walks and a pinch-hit home run (to a pitcher). Was Franklin just poor today? Unlucky? Innings starting to take their toll?

but at least they did pull it out. The offense seems to be a little more back on track. Our pitchers seem to all be getting blasted lately, tons of homers, etc. ’Course part of that today is the ballpark. Glad to see Albert finally hit one that last 10 feet or so. How many warning track flies did he hit in that hitless streak?

We are playing bad baseball and a lot of it seems to be mental

defensive errors and handing out free passes. This team is lacking some serious focus and it is costing them games. Whatever Tony said in the closed door meeting last night didn’t seem to help today.

Try something else. Maybe bring the fungo and bully the players like you do the press. Maybe the young guys will be so scared, they’ll stop booting the ball.

by Hardcore Legend on May 10, 2009 9:09 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I love Rick "Dick" Ankiel but this quote from Raz has me caring less about losing Dick to free agency..,
“I just play how I play,” said Rasmus, an everyday presence since the club placed regular center fielder Rick Ankiel on the disabled list last week. “I don’t look at it as little ball early then a big hit late. I just look at doing what I can whenever I’m up there to help the team win.”

This quote has Tonys fingerprints all over it. For anyone that says Tony doesn’t develop young talent all I have to say is Albert Pujols. Rasmus will be a good player but the longer he plays under Tonys direction the better he will be.

You don't think Tony had anything to do with keeping Albert on his game?

Tony always talks about hitting for average no matter how strong a guy you are and Pujols seems to play that way.

I may be stretching it a little bit but do you really think all Tony does is show up an fill out a line-up card?

LOL.

I don’t get it though…

We have this winning atmosphere that has been around for the last few years.

It all starts with the manager. You can put together a team of the greatest players and give them a so/so manager and they will fail but yet teams with good players and a great managers will always be competitive. The more chances you have of getting to the playoffs the greater chance you have of winning a world series. It is about being consistant and playing competitive baseball the whole year and keeping your players sharp/healthy.

Tony keeps winning. He’s a winner and that is all I meant about him helping with developing young players. That attitude rubs off on young players. I would never say that Albert owes his swing to Tony but I will say that he has to have had an effect on his mental approach to the game.

One of the things I admire most about Albert is his mental toughness and yes I do think Tony helped develop that aspect of Alberts game.

Wainwright was alarmed to learn his arm slot is “three to four inches, probably, five inches maybe” more vertical than typical last season.

Seems like something pretty easy to see using pitch/fx, if true.
