Why not take a pitch and make sure the new guy can find the plate ? I wonder if there are stats for this sort of thing. Maybe it’s just selective memory, but it seems that the vast majority fo first pitch swinign in pressure situations ends up badly. I think the batters are overeager.

The Cardinls have never gone to a World series in a year ending in 9. Every other year they have: 1930, 31, 42, 82, 43, 34, 44, 64, 85, 26, 46, 2006, 67, 87 , 28 & 68. But no 9s, Could this be the year?

by zoomzoomj88 on May 10, 2009 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

how on earth

can you blame this on franklin, a guy who spent most of his career as a starter, having to get an extra out in the eighth inning, which he did without any issue at all.

by DanUpBaby on May 10, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

what does 4 years ago have to do w/ his coniditioning now?

closers are fickle beasts. i don’t know why but the come on in the 8th and get the save thing seems to be a bad idea more times than not

by kalmavet on May 10, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

he was a setup guy last year

what if he gets in trouble and faces that many hitters in the ninth inning? Pitchers cannot possibly be conditioned to pitch to just three batters—it’s not that granular. It’ll be amazing if we decide we can get on the guy who invented the three out closer for occasionally stretching him past that

by DanUpBaby on May 10, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

bringing franklin in during the 8th inn was a bad idea

you said so above!! as did azru.

and it’s not about the amount of hitters persay but the break between inn and total pitch count. you don’t think 43 is high for a RP. You think that had nothing to do w/ 2 pitches on tees?

i’m not saying 3 out closers is the god’s gift to the 9th inn. i wish we could do away w/ closers altogher and just play the matchups, using the best RP against their best, etc (which also doesnt apply to having him in during the 8th vs lefty to walk him on purpose but i digress). I know that typically this doesn’t work for whatever reason and it didn’t work again.

by kalmavet on May 10, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

bringing franklin in to face a lefty

when your lefty specialist was on the mound already was the bad decision we were criticizing. I wish managers would bring their closers in for 4 and 5 outs more often.

Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation

by azruavatar on May 10, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Got ya

and i agree on the lefty part, anyone could’ve thrown the pitches to walk him. or you could let the lefty face Votto and perhaps get the final out.

I haven’t crunched the numbers and I’m open to being wrong but I think the 4-5 out saves are not a high percentage success rate. It’s silly that it doesn’t seem to work but I think that’s the case. I don’t know if it’s cause of the break while the offense bats or what the deal is. Maybe it’s all mental. I’m curious as the save % for all of baseball generally and Franklin in particular when called on for more than an inning.

by kalmavet on May 10, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Um...

Of course 4 and 5 out saves are much harder than 3 out saves. After all 6 out saves are twice as hard to get as 3 out saves. Even adding one more out should and does make a significant difference in save success percentage.

by Willie McGee's Twin on May 10, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

not to mention that if a closer is being brought in for 4 outs

it’s likely already a high leverage situation with a lower probability of winning.

Future Redbirds - tracking Cardinal prospects for Cardinal Nation

by azruavatar on May 10, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

yes that much is intuitive regarding the % overall and i should have clarified that i mean in the 9th after suceeded in the 8th

the point is why is that the alleged best pitcher in the ‘pens of their respective teams so often fail in the extended role? someone has to get those outs. Why can’t closers make 4-5 out saves more consistently? Conditioning? Why does conventional wisdom say there needs to be setup guys? (i know, i know a lot of us hate such conventional thinking but still there’s a reason managers think in those terms). Higher leverage is certainly a factor but setup guys deal w/ it all the time as well. And the issue is not getting the final out of the 8th but getting 3 in the 9th after coming in during the 8th. so in that sense the leverage increasing the % of failure isn’t a big deal (perhaps i should never have mentioned % above). or put another way, what % does the closer blow in the 9TH not the 8TH. Leverage in the 8th would then be largely unimportant as having no bearing on the 9th. It seems to me that something beyond “more outs” creates the problem—like the break while the team bats, having to warm up again, etc.

Pitch counts could be an issue too. Franklin was well over 30 by the time that Ownings hit the hr. Could someone else have gotten the final out in the 8th? that’s the main issue here. and the answer is to use the LOOGY vs the left-handed hitter. Thus, the closer is fresh for the 9th. Maybe Franklin still gives up the HRs but maybe he would’ve been less tired, and thus sharper overall and would not have given up the HRs. I don’t know.

Closers are heady too. Look at Franklin closing this year vs last? what’s the difference exactly? Any verifiable reason for him being better? Sure his stats are better but why? Cause Izzy isn’t there? Cause he thinks tony has more confidence in him so he’s less worried about losing the role? who knows? it’s all hyopthetical, but the point is we know these guys tend to be heady (all but the absolute best of them) and any change in their role/routine runs the risk of messing them up. Not very sabremetric of me but you only need to watch the games to see that. Thus, use the guys in their proper roles which is LOOGY vs Votto, 3 out save for Franklin

by kalmavet on May 10, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions
