Nice lead
Just got up (6:30 am) and went straight to Gameday to see a 5-0 game at the end of the 6th, and now 6-0 after Thursty’s blast. I haven’t had time to read the previous thread to catch up on things, but assume that there is more contentment today, except perhaps Ank and Greene 0-3, well Skippy 0fer too? The Colonel apparently pitching well too (not to jink him)?

good d from tyler, but no hits from him.

kind of off topic, but I heard a story from a Cubs fan friend of mine last night...
…concerning Mark Grace. Apparently Grace has said before that when he was in a prolonged slump, he would go out to a bar and go hogging — he would pick one up, take her home and take her to bed…he called them his ‘slumpbusters.’
Anyone hear this before? I hope it’s true, because it’s hilarious.
I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.

Mark Grace on the Jim Rome Show
On the definition of a “slumpbuster”, after being pressed by host Jim Rome in a now-infamous 2003 interview on the television show “Rome is Burning” to clarify the baseball slang term…
“A slumpbuster is when you have to take one for the team. It’s finding the biggest, nastiest, fattest broad, and you put the wood to her to come out of your slump. Also known as ‘jumping on a grenade for the team’.”

actually, an interview with John Mabry awhile back when he first came up made me feel better. Mabry said he was just focusing on singles, and seeing the ball for the first few months in the league. after a bit, he was convinced that after he started knowing pitchers, power would come.
he had a horrid start to spring even though he brought a bangers body to ST (added some mass in the offseason), tried to power his way on the club.
Tony reeled him in, told him to concentrate on getting on base and hitting hard without trying to bash it out. It worked very well in ST and his OBP has carried over into the season admirably for someone his age with his ’08.

People were saying we needed to keep Thompson on the roster on opening day because he was out of options and we would lose him if he didn’t make the team.
With that said did he pass through waivers on his way to Memphis or what is the deal with that?
I thought he had one option left, I don’t recall talk about him passing through waivers when we did the shuttle

We are still missing one of the greatest pitchers in franchise history
and a 3B that can get you 30HR/100 RBI in a season.
Think about THAT.

Who knows
It’s just amazing that we have an ace and a slugger on the DL, not being used.
We’ve got a great hitter at Springfield who could probably walk on right now and give you above average play and a handful of other bench OF’ers waiting for a chance as well.
Our slugging SS is massively underperforming and our all-world prospect has yet to hit a HR (though is playing great D and getting on base).
There is actually room for this team to score MORE runs.
by Hardcore Legend on May 1, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions
and we just went through a team scoring slump that mirrored our post all star break slump last year where we dumped quite a few games in a stretch. this time we held it together.

Frankly, I still do.
Get half way into the season and have both Boyer continuing to pitch well, and the minor-league outfield prospects (Jones, Jay, etc.) still looking good, and I’ll change my mind. But it’s too early for that.

I like it
needed bullpen help. Had a crowded outfield, wish we could have gotten a better pitcher but really I like it

still though
realistically I don’t think this team is going to play .700 ball thru 162 games…..600 ball might be within reach (~97) with a bit of luck and no major injuries…..
honestly
I have to say .600 the rest of the way would be about the best we could realistically hope for
by Scarecrow7775 on May 1, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions
roger that
plus I think the pen could end up being a major strength by the AS break
by Scarecrow7775 on May 1, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions
as long as
the rotation holds up…..Lohse and Waino are solid (Waino has looked like he could pitch better even), and Boggs/Welly/Joel are not a bad back end, although you have to wonder whether they can continue to pitch decently all year….
It’s the overexposure of the bullpen that always worries me….Welly going 7 tonight was huge.
I'm envisioning,
perhaps foolishly, and speaking of Dibble, Motte, McC, and Perez transforming into some sort of Nasty Boys II

Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.

anyway- +1
by Scarecrow7775 on May 1, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Pit will worry me until they nosedive, then not so much. I think we can match up well with the rests, but then Houston will be having issues considering it’s illegal to have a walker next to the mound when you pitch and some will need one on that staff. Brew could make a run but I doubt it.
Thinking the NL East will beat up on the Marlins some between now and then and take away some of that fight.

Brought up under the same theme.
Typed it quite a few times last year (though we really struggled around 14 over). Big believer in making other teams chase you down while your team has enough breathing room to rest and just play per series ball.
