What kind of positive are we talking about
Are we talking illicit drugs or PEDs? Having just read Josh Hamilton’s book, this is scary to me for the young man. Either way, hope he can overcome this.

He's a kid
with more money than most kids his age have access to. Kids make mistakes, things like this are going to happen. Here’s hoping that this was a pot smoking thing and not a steroid thing, mainly because steroids could really hinder his long term development.
Probably 50% of college kids try pot at some point and it’s not really a gateway drug like our government claims that it is. As long as he gets treatment for it, if that’s what it is, I’m not going to worry too much about his long term development.

Treatment for pot?
Think we might be being a bit too drastic?

No
If he has a “substance-abuse” problem then he needs to seek treatment for it. (See: Spiezio, Scott)

pretty sure
they don’t suspend players for smoking pot. Say what you want about it but pot is hardly a performance-enhancing drug unless you’re a competitor in a hot dog (or Snickers bar) eating contest.
it seems he was though
Hooker, a seventh-round pick of the Cardinals in 2007, was cited for a "drug of abuse’’ violation. Drugs and substances that fall under that classification include marijuana, cocaine, morphine, codeine, heroin, LSD, ecstasy, GHB and PCP.
Let’s just hope that it was pot, or even Tylenol 3 ( how do you abuse codiene?).

or by telling it it's stupid and will never be anything.

hm
As far as I know most of those drugs leave your system quickly, with the exception of marijuana. That makes me lean towards it being pot…but
I know Josh Hancock had marijuana in his car on that sad night. It seems like there are a few stereotypical stoners in baseball. Do they really care if a player tests positive for THC?
if you poke through the regs, they don't randomly test for "drugs of abuse."
they only test where they have a reason to test.
so maybe if you don’t walk around reeking of weed or consume an extra-large pizza in front of the testers you don’t get tested for marijuana.

You're talking a small dose of codeine
They’re talking about hydrocodone, which would include drugs as strong as Vicodin. It’s what was prescribed to me post-knee surgery when I had by ACL reconstructed, and it will knock you on your ass at doses above 400 mg.

Yes, they do
In the link it’s sited as a “drug of abuse” violation, which includes painkillers, cocaine, marijuana, heroin, LSD, ecstasy, GHB, and PCP.
