I don't know if it's been mentioned already

These threads are getting crazy long again… But the attendance last night was only 35,206, the lowest in the history of the stadium. Last year’s average was 42,353. Ticket sales might be doing better than attendance because of season ticket holders continuing to pay high ticket prices, but the low attendance will have to have an impact if it keeps up. If the average attendance is even 4,000 less than last year and the average fan spends just $15 at the game, over a full season that’s roughly $5 million lost compared to last year. That’s roughly 5-6% of our current payroll. That goes on top of the money they’re already losing from lower ticket sales. If the attendance from last night was the norm over the whole year, we’re talking $8.5 million. Let’s hope this economy gets turned around quick because waiting for it to self correct may cost us some players.

And I’m loving Rasmus in the leadoff spot tonight. At this point he’s more of a doubles type guy so he should work well there. Whatever the case, he’s better than Ryan.

The Godfather himself has decided to grace us with his presence. This is his damn house. He sleeps 20 feet away.

Temperature

Im not sure if I’m off base here or not, but, would the cold temperatures, and it being a Tuesday night, maybe have had something to do with the downed attendance?

I dont know that I would have been in the stands. Then again, Im a southern boy… I dont like the cold.

He was scheduled to start today’s game before the series started. But the whole “my fielding average is almost as bad as my batting average and I haven’t got a hit yet” isn’t the best way to go about getting regular playing time.

Really?

Small, blue-collar market
Piss-poor economy
40,000 seats x 162 games

I mean, hell, is it really fair to expect sellouts these days?

by mojowo11 on Apr 8, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I would definitly switch

I had mediacom a couple of years ago in Ames and missed a lot of games, Had directv last year and no problems. And if you can spring for it get all the sports channels definitly worth it to get way more baseball (only one that we had trouble with was NESN roommate was a red sox fan and pissed a lot of the time) Btw I’m pretty sure Iowa is the place where baseball on tv goes to die, I think whoever writes the blackout rules should live there awhile and experience how frustrating it is. I mean who’s driving 6 hours to go see a Cards or Cubs game thats not sold out?

by cyko42 on Apr 8, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Blackout rules

I bought MLB.TV for the first time this year so I could watch the Cards games in northern Iowa. Opening day I found out the black me out saying I’m in the local TV viewing area even though I’m 8+ hours away. Needless to say I called them and told them I lived 20 minutes north and they overruled the blackout so I can watch now.

by cowcards on Apr 8, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

did you tell them you live in Minnesota?

MLB.TV is having their annual early season problems with archiving games, so that route failed me last night too.

by phesto on Apr 8, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought that sounded fishy

Looks likes I am going to have to fire off another email for the blackout list, or…F- it. DirecTV carries all the games on FSN, or do I need the Extra Innings package?

* sarcasm might be involved in this comment

by mattyfrommo on Apr 8, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

i saw your blackout list from last year

and tried to e-mail Mediacom for the one this year. This was the response I got:

Your area is considered home territory for the St Louis Cardinals. Therefore the MLB reserves the right to black out these games regardless of the channels they may play on. Mediacom Communications does provide the channels to our customers, but we do not control the programming on those channels. These decisions are made generally at the last moment therefore we would not be able to tell you what games will be aired or blacked out.

by phesto on Apr 8, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I am thinking that is a load

* sarcasm might be involved in this comment

by mattyfrommo on Apr 8, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You know, if mlb.com offered blackout tokens

Like $1 per game to void the blackout (on top of the regular mlb.tv cost), I’d totally buy that up.

I'm sure most TLR lineups will be interesting

I’m surprised with Rasmus being the lead-off, and I’m also surprised to see Freese starting. We should be able to win again tonight. We need some consistency to do that, but I think it can be done.

seems like a lot of the missed pitches were off-speed offerings.

welly’s fastball got hit a little bit, but was the most successful.

Yeah, it was goofy.

He was getting asked how Freese didn’t play in the first two games after being annointed the starter. Tony went all Tony, and took offense, saying that nobody had annointed him the starter.

i’m just noting that it has a poor historical reception by this manager. especially in rookies.

I'm ok with him swinging on 3-0

He could just sit dead red on the fastball, since Duke didn’t want to walk the guy in front of the pitcher. He ripped it, but Morgan is fast, and made a good play

I dont like it with one out and the pitcher on deck

a bunt with 2 on puts 2 guys in scoring position for Boog. Not necessarily reassuring, but good in theory
