Cardinals Bullpen Chart for VEB fans
It would be great to have a chart that tells us all how rested or abused each relief pitcher is going into each game.
Here are some general guidelines for how it would work, but they are not set in stone.
A reliever who has not pitched in at least two days has a "Green Light"
A reliever who pitched a least once in the last two days has a "Yellow Light"
A reliever who pitched two days in a row or two of the last three days has a "Red Light"
Here's an example for Thursday night's game-
Thursday @ Nationals- Boggs vs D. Cabrera 6:05pm FS-M
Red Light- Motte
Yellow Light- Reyes, Franklin, McClellan, Perez
Green Light- Walters, Miller, Boyer

Question
What about a guy like Reyes that may come in three days in a row, for example, but face one or two batters each night? To be honest, I don’t know how long it takes him to warm up, but I imagine not too long, so I don’t know if he’d be a “red light” in that case.
Maybe we add in some sort of quantitative assessment of their effort over the previous few games: appearances, pitches, batters faced, etc.
I like the idea though – would give us a feel for the status of the bullpen for that game and maybe make sense of some of the moves that night
Yeah, these evaluations are more of an art than a science
Reyes is a perfect example. He has pitched 2 days in a row, and 3 of the last 4 days, but I still listed him in the “Yellow Light” section because he only faced 4 total batters in that span.

This would probably have to be more specific
in terms of pitch count. Like Perez who has come in two of the last three games and only pitched 1/3 of an inning each time for a grand total of nine pitches. He’d probably have a green light to go tonite if he needed to since his pitch counts were so low.
Patiently awaiting the day Colby Rasmus does this: .275/.381/.551/.932, 29HR, in St. Louis...and I'm wanting an Allen Craig call-up!
Great idea
I agree with the two suggestions concerning those who pitch to a single batter or two batters.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."

Dang it.
See, brafi and RunninRedbird already said anything substantive that I would have said, and now you come in here and beat me to the “awesome idea, I think the other commenters have good input as well” post. This is the sort of thing that forces me to rely on my geeky wit in order to have something worthy of saying at VEB.

What light would be someone who loosened up in the 'pen, but didn't throw in a game?

I'd perfer to see pitch counts rather than appearances
esp for the LOOGYs
hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit
I look forward to this being refined and implemented in game threads
example: What color is Young Pitcher right now? Should Tony bring him in next inning?
Well, the chart indicates he’s yellow but almost a greenish yellow because he threw what, 7 pitches last night? Boyer is super green but I’d rather go with the Prez here.
That was exactly what I was thinking
It helps us as fans understand some of the reasons behind Tony’s moves. This way if Chris Perez gives up 2 runs in the 8th inning tonight the “Tony should have pulled him and used Motte” argument is avoided.
All other ideas of how to define “Red, Yellow, Green” are all welcome. I’d love to see someone take this idea and run with it.

Excel
Not sure how to get the data easily into excel (though exporting from some stat database might not be hard even if I can’t do it) but Excel now has conditional formatting. You could have it format the cell that the player’s name is in based on his pitch count the last few days or days rest, etc. Same could be done for the rotation so you know who could be bumped up to short rest or who is fully rested, etc. in the case of off days or rain out double headers, etc.
"People call me El Hombre," Pujols said. "But only Stan is the Man."
Any computer programmer type people in the house?
If so, someone could turn this into a small application that transfers the excel data into a desktop “widget” or some other type of java-web based application that we could actually reference during games.

Boyer
I gotta believe we’ll see more of Boyer rather soon … like tonight in Washington. Although having low expectations on him, I’m curious to see what sort of magic Duncan can work with this castoff.
brown light?
you sometimes hear that a pitcher is over-rested or rusty b/c they haven’t pitched in a while. i’m not sure if there is actually data to back this up, but you always hear announcers blame blown saves on the fact that closer X has not pitched for a week or you hear them talk about the manager trying to get a relief arm some work in to keep him sharp. with this in mind, perhaps there should be a brown (color of rust sort of) light for a pitcher who has not seen game action for a long time maybe 5 to 7 days or longer.
if i could wish for anything for gameday, this would be it.
and not just for the cards.
i often click on the other team’s bullpen and say “crap, I have no idea who’s fresh and who we’re likely to face.” if the team is not one i’m familiar with, i sometimes don’t even know who the other four starters are. I bet you could run some not-very-complicated software to snag number of appearances and number of pitches thrown over the last several days to bump the freshest non-starter arms up to the top.
the truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark/ it scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark -- macmanus
If nothing else...
It’s a fun idea for someone to post right at the beginning of a new game thread. Get it in there early like the lineup usually is, and as someone else said, it’d be even better if it were done for both teams, although then that would double the work.
yes, someone please do this
I came up with the idea, now I’d like someone else to do the dirty work, lol.
All 3 green light pitchers saw action tonight
Boyer and Miller looked like they were going to pitch regardless of the score. Walters got in because of the blowout.
