Walking

It looked like that was an unintentional intentional walk of Chipper. If so, that was a dumb move. Putting on the go ahead run on purpose doesn’t make sense if it’s Babe Frickin’ Ruth. Or does he have really bad range to his left? I know TLR has him shaded toward third but he doesn’t seem to get a good jump. So far this season I am very unimpressed with the surfer dude. He will spend one season here.

I think your interpretation was fine

“You were watching the same game, yes?” is not asking if you were watching this game on TV or following on Gameday. It’s implying you must be following a completely different game because you’re so wrong about what happened. Not that there’s anything wrong with a little snarkiness, but it clearly was a snarky comment, not a “valid question” in the non-snarky way that implies.

by BTown Birds fan on Apr 28, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

it had nothing to do with what call was made – keep it in context.

you made a comment summing up all of the pitchers (you clarified it to BP after).

our pitching has been great, and is it so hard to believe that we have just run into average pitchers who pitched well the last few games? Not to mention Jurrjens and Harden are pretty good pitchers.

I can't be critical?

Why not? Should I just talk about how “they gave a hard 9” and tried real hard out there?

As for expecting the worst, I never said I expected them to lose. I was merely pointing out that winning tomorrow is a much taller task than winning today was.

Braves fans exhibit only a passing interest in their team

Most everyone in Atlanta, if asked for a favorite baseball team, would reply with the Braves. Many would say they watch on TV most every night. But they don’t go to the stadium much, and probably don’t spend more time a day on their team than a casual glance at the box score.

Can't balk with nobody on base

But I seriously think Pujols was flustered by it and was distracted on that last pitch. He called timeout right before basically just saying “WTF?”

hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit

by Alxfritz on Apr 28, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You can't?

I thought it was called a ball if no one was on base. I may be wrong. I haven’t umped in 9 years or so.

by MichiganBird on Apr 28, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I could be wrong

but I toyed with every rule possible when i pitched b/c I was terrible (stepping of with my pivot foot while pretending to pitch from the windup with a runner on third got a lot of pickoffs and a lot of balks -incorrectly - called on me) and I’m damn near positive you can’t balk with no runners on.

hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit

by Alxfritz on Apr 28, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the distinction is between balk

and deceive the batter. You don’t have to come to a complete stop if no one’s on base. But you can’t quick pitch to try and deceive the batter. That’s a ball if no one’s on base, and runners advance if someone’s on. There are a few ways a batter can be awarded a ball on a play that would have been a balk w/runners on.

by MichiganBird on Apr 28, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

As long as the bater is in the box

you can’t technically quick pitch, no?

Let's liven things up with some A-Rey talk --

He’s pitching himself out of Cleveland which is a hard thing to do — looks like same pattern of tantalizing good stretches punctuated by some bad innings. I think he has a bout 3 ML starts left before he is AAA again.

Cards

just didn’t have it today. Hitting was flat. It will not be a juggernaut every single night. Lohse did everything but win the game by himself. Bullpen pitched ok, McClellan somewhat lost is command but caught a bad break on the Diaz call. Still, walking 3, even if Chipper was intentional is really not something that McClellan will do very often (3.1 career BB/9). Just gotta say we weren’t good enough today come back tomorrow and fight harder for the win. Greene will be alright, and yeah, he should have gotten that grounder but there will be a time when he wins a game with his bat, if there hasn’t been already. Ace is going out tomorrow against a middle of the rotation pitcher in Vazquez. Ludwick, Pujols Duncan and Rasmus will not go 0-for together again for a very long time. Let tonight go and start thinking how to celebrate Waino’s shutout tomorrow

The only thing [McClellan] did wrong was walk the leadoff man.

Tony said this after the game. If Kyle doesn’t walk Francouer, it’s a tie game. Never mind the fact that you have to almost try to walk Francouer.

I read it a little differently.

“The only thing McClellan] did wrong was walk the leadoff man.”

UIBB call wasn’t his clearly came out of the dugout. Jeff’s walk took blue’s help.

Either way, let’s hope that K-Mac’s curve is in a funk and not a sign of something else. It was all over the place game before last, and this one while having a couple of filthy ones didn’t look good either.

Morning after...wish there was a pill

The story of the game: Jo-Jo Reyes was dealing. Even though he only threw first pitch strikes to 10 of the 25 batters he faced, he managed to strike out 7 and retire 13 in a row at one point, walking only Pujols (and hitting Rasmus) in the first. He gave up 3 hits (all singles) to the battery, but no one else was able to touch him.

Lohse had a really good game in his own right. 58 of his 95 pitches went for strikes, and the big question around his knee was put to rest. He struck out six and issued 4 passes (3 to Chipper), and gave up only 4 singles. Can’t ask for more than six innings of shutout ball from the starter.

McClellan, obviously, is a different story. Only 11 of his 24 pitches were strikes (excluding the UIBB to Chipper), and he lacked control of his offspeed stuff pretty clearly. Regardless of umpire discretion and what TLR says, walking Infante and Francoeur (!) is inexcusable. While Diaz didn’t exactly rip the game-winner up the middle, McC was asking for trouble by issuing the BBs and giving the runners a free head start.

It’s easy to lay all the blame on McClellan, and maybe rightfully so. But some focus should be on the offense as well: 3 singles, no extra base hits, 11 strikeouts, 1 walk. Not going to win many games like that, even if the bullpen is shining.

While the outcome wasn’t what we wanted, there were a few good takeaways if I make myself look for them. As mentioned before, Lohse had another excellent start. Jason Motte came in and took care of business, throwing 9 of 11 pitches for strikes and only giving up a single. The staff as a whole gave up 2 runs and no extra base hits – The Machine will win a game like that by himself offensively 9 times out of 10.

Let’s just hope that la maquina and the rest of the offense can get something going for WW tonight.

(oh, and giant disclaimer, all numbers cited here are from my own record, and the distraction of a beer or two could have caused some inaccuracy)

I have this weird problem where I keep reading "intentional" as "international", and confuse myself thoroughly when wondering why Pujols doesn't have more IBBs.

K-Mac's role?

Is K-Mac the best set-up option? I’d prefer to see him (Boyer) in the 6th/7th, then have Motte and YP set up for Franklin.

Is K-Mac being used in the 8th b/c he “takes longer to warm-up” as opposed to Motte and YP?
